Here t h e q and /3 are new constants which result from t h e
substitution. Since the causes 8 are subject t o chance only, their
averages will disappear. If, then, we assume x 1 t o be constant,
we have
(2) = q n l x,.
Average x,,
Now we will form the products x1 x,,. These may be arranged
in such order that all t h e x 1 that have equal values shall be
grouped together. Then each of these values for x1 will be mul-
tiplied by the s u m of all t h e correlated values of x,. Supposing
there are p individuals in which t h e first organ has the deviation
from its average xl, we may substitute for the sum of all the cor-
related values x,, p times the average of x,,or according t o ( 2 ) ,
p q,,Ix I . Therefore the s u m total
z ’ x , x,, = X x ,q,,r XI = 2 y,,, , y e .
Now, the sum of all the xla is equal t o t h e mean square
variation (or standard variation) of L,, which we will call p , .
Therefore
2’x* XI, = 2’y,,r / ( I z,

This low value may be due to the cause that on the coast of British Columbia two
types come into contact, one with a very high face, the other with a low face. Their
mixture would probably result in a decrease of the correlations for height of face in
the mixed race.

in which sum a and 6 must be made t o assume all the values from

I have treated, according t o this method, the measurements
of the 57 skulls of adult male Sioux Indians t o which I referred
above (page 453). I have compared length (I) and breadth (6) of
skull with its height (h),the bizygomatic diameter of the face (z),
and with the capacity of the skull. F o r the last purpose I have
made a reduction which seemed necessary, because t h e capacity
of t h e skull is a cubic measure, while all t h e others are linear
measures. F o r this reason I have compared the latter with the
cubic root of the capacity of the skulls (c). T h e averages and
variabilities of these measurements are as follows :
