ALO G DA RILES RAILFA S GUIDE TO THE PHILIPPI ES

This guide is meant to share the latest information with people around the world who share an interest in Philippine railways. The intention is to occasionally grow the guide and issue updated versions electronically, while a smaller hard copy version will be sent to PNR people, railway archives and other places with similar interests. HOW CA YOU HELP Of course both this guide and our other publications require corrections, updates and any additional information. All our society publications rely on the generosity of people who willingly share information, and even funds, to benefit others. This publication will cover the latest information on the Philippine railways, while others in planning will cover the railways in a more historical content PRHS.Society@gmail.com All our work is voluntary and solely to promote the Philippine railways and its related hobby

PHILIPPI E RAILWAY HISTORICAL SOCIETY Starting as the Philippine Railways SIG in 1999, the society set up as a means to learn about the Philippines, share information and connect people with a similar interest. The group is mostly internet based, though we did go through a small period as an official group with the plan to help preserve railway items in the Philippines. With mass scrapping of the majority of rollingstock in 2010, the idea was set aside and we returned to our original purpose. Our magazine/guidebook Along Da Riles is the last link to these days and has taken on a life of its own. It continues solely through contributions by myself and a few significant other people who care. Our internet activities are vast. We are regularly emailed with enquiries both historical and of a more general nature and we are happy to help where possible. We have numerous websites accessible through: http://philippine-railways.blogspot.com We also have a number of Yahoogroup forums for sharing information and meeting others: PhilippineRailways LocoShed_Photography_Philippines Philippine_Modelling Philippine_Transportation Look forward to meeting you on a forum soon!

THIS ISSUE IS DEDICATED TO THE MEMORY OF GRAHAM HOLT

P R February 2011 PNR introduces a new dark blue with gold lining livery to its locomotive fleet and on the front of its Phase 1 ROTEM cars. The livery has been swiftly applied to most operational locomotives, even to the ones that had just recently been painted in the Filtrack livery. April 2011 A ROTEM set collides with a Coca Cola truck in Manila, causing significant damage and reports of a possible scrapping of DMR-11 as a result. June 2011 * Early June, word from a PNR employee says that the long expected new rollingstock was two weeks away. * Final test run of the Bicol Express to Naga is completed and considered a success. Legaspi reported to be open by years end. July 2011 * The Bicol Express is relaunched , running overnight between Manila and Legaspi on alternative days. The initial train is delayed due to soil erosion damage to an embankment. * The long disused ex-Japanese dining car (stored at Caloocan Workshops since arrival) has had a lot of work carried out to it at Caloocan and is being used on this new service. * Bicol Express suspended in late July due to recent typhoon damage in the Sipocot area. Recommencement expected in September. Bicol Commuter Train suspended due to major damage in the Naga to Ligao section. No word on a reopening date, but it is believed this will delay the reopening to Legaspi. Yet another report on the second hand carriages coming from Japan. The latest now says that they will arrive in August and September. Panay Railway April 2011 The P16B project to be bid in May. July 2011 * Government announces that the Panay Railway rebuild may be shelved in favour of road improvements. orthrail Construction of thios project has halted while further evaluations are carried out. No word has been received on when, or indeed if, the project is to proceed. LRT February 2011 * Two set collide during a shunting movement on the new LRT1 north extension. 1G 1013-1014-1015 (1013 leading in the collision) 3G 1233 - 1234- 1235- 1236 (1236 leading in the collision) Media later announces that the cause was a driver overspeeding and talking on his mobile phone. March 2011 Two passengers were injured during panic when an emergency brake caused smoke to billow into a Light Rail Transit (LRT) train when it broke down near UN Avenue Station August 2011 Test run from Balintawak to North Avenue is conducted. It is reported that a few signalling issues need to be sorted before services commence. MRT March 2011 The rear coach of a three car set detaches from an in service set, bringing further attention to maintenance contractors. April 2011 April 20th, set stalls at Buendia station due to a power fluctuation. People were helped to leave the train. Metro Manila Development Authority February 2011 Announce a tramway down EDSA as part of a larger plan to improve Manila. University of Philippines July 2011 * Announces plans to test a monorail service around its campus to help move people around. * The announcement then leads to a flurry of other monorail proposals to serve Makati and surrounding areas Given monorail systems are usually quite slow, unable to move great loads of passengers and are very inflexible, the announcement of their wide spread use has come as a surprise to many. Philippine Railway Heritage April 2011 Local Authorities in San Fernando, Pampanga, announce a P5M facelift for their local railway station. May 2011 Surviving La Carlota locomotives were privately purchased and moved to another island for preservation. August 2011 The society was approached by local people in Tarlac who plan to restore the station for use as a local museum. They require photos and information - if you can help, please contact the PRHS. Philippine Railway Hobby * Two of the Philippine railfan hobbies greatest have left us since our last publication. Bill Sullivan (PRHS Vice-President) passed away in December, while researcher Graham Holt passed away in June. The hobby will be much the poorer for their loss. * Talks are taking place with a view to possibly shipping modelling equipment from overseas to the Philippines for railway modellers there. The plan is to make purchasing second hand and new rail model equipment easier for locals by sharing the freight burden. Second hand equipment making modelling more viable for the locals there. Corrections/Additions/Contributions Please email us at: PRHS.Society@gmail.com Thanks to Karel Brouwers, Michael Cacho, Graham Holt and Brian Young for news in this issue. PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RAILWAYS PASSENGER STOCK

Line closures and suspensions over the years has seen a huge reduction in the amount of rollingstock needed. Second hand rollingstock from Japan during the last decade saw an end to the fascinating 7E cars built in Madras, while the arrival of DMUs from Korea in 2009, along with the promise of more second hand items from Japan lead to a mass scrapping of many classes in 2009. Despite efforts to preserve these important items, the last two years has seen the extinction of the 7A (Original), 7E, 7SE and MCBP class. NOTE: Not all classes are shown here. A small number of baggage and baggage/power cars are excluded and may feature in future issues of this publication. R-01 Santa Rosa Refurbishment (2009): The sole example of what was to be a project to refurbish all the NR class carriages from Japan. Famous bus builder Sta Rosa got the contract, but it did not proceed beyond the prototype. NR-01 now sees use on the renewed Bicol Express to Naga.. R Class: Arriving second hand from Japan in 2004, these carriages were classified NR, despite being identical to the 7A below, and were mostly used on services to Bicol before this service was suspended in 2006. Today some have seen upgrade work for use on the renewed Bicol Express. 7A/CAR Class: Arriving in the 1990s, the 7A class is made up of former Japanese 12 and 14 class rollingstock. Having spent many years both on Metro Manila and Bicol services, they have been largely replaced by the Korean DMUs. One very worn out set runs the daily Binan service, while five that had a small refurbishment done (CAR class) in Naga are usually used on the Bicol Commuter service. 7BP: Baggage/Power vans for Bicol services. PC 286 Former presidential car of Ferdinand Marcos. This historic piece remains locked up at Caloocan, with nobody seemingly aware of where the key is located. Officially it awaits repair on the PNR register as of 2010. 7C Class: Nearly extinct class, the few remaining either used for works service or in very bad condition. CMC/CTC: Scrappings in 2010 saw the near extinction of these Japanese cars. A couple remain in departmental use (Manila, Lucena, Naga), a few more laying around Manila in various states of disrepair. Sleepers: Due: A number of Phase 2 ROTEM cars were reported by PNR to be arriving in 2009. As of publishing there has been no further word. Twice during 2011 reports of second hand carriages coming from Japan. As of July 22nd neither lots had arrived. There also appears to be some uncertainty as to whether they are DMU or EMU in type.

PHILIPPINE NATIONAL RAILWAYS FREIGHT VEHICLES

Rail freight services in the Philippines are almost none existent since the cessation of the private container train from Laguna to North Port. The rollingstock on this page is used, if used at all, mostly for PNR operational and maintenance purposes. NOTE: Not all types and variations are shown. These are the main types, but there are some variations in crew vehicles (Lucena and example) and classifications across the system. CLASS TYPE BC Box LAST SEEN 2011 NOTES In 2007 there were officially 35 on the books, however their actual numbers seem to far outweigh that. Today, although seeing little use, they can be found in yards over the whole system. At leat two have been converted for crew use. Made in Japan. A couple of this class have been converted for crew usage and are utilized on track maintenance and breakdown duties. These open wagons appear mostly used for ballast duties, while scrap has been noticed as part of their loads during the clearing operations. Some are named for the Hondagua Division (see map). All near identical flat cars, these vehicles are numerous in numbers from Manila through to Naga. According to builders plates they were built in Japan, the reasons for the multitude of different classes is unknown. See above. Appear to be just a quick conversion of only a couple of the flat wagon types.

A handful of these tankers still exist, mostly within Tayuman yard, but also one very well kept example in Naga. (2010). One in Tayuman was said to hold diesel for the railcars and likely the locomotives. All were built in the United States, giving them a very similar look to others of their type in that country. The sole WT, currently isolated in the disuse Calamba shed, was used for hauling water. These interesting vans may look very American, but builders plates tell you they were built in Japan. Underframes look virtually identical to the flat wagons above. They can be found in major yards across the system
