Polynomials – A1

Topics Covered in today’s Lecture:

o A combination of constants and variables which are connected by mathematical operators

like +, -, x and/or ÷, is called an algebraic expression.

o An equation is an equality involving variables and it has an equality sign (=).

o Each term in an algebraic expression is a product of one or more number(s) or literal(s).

These number(s) and literal(s) are known as the factors of that term.

o A constant factor is called a numerical factor, while a variable factor is called a literal factor.

o Coefficient: In a term of an algebraic expression any of the factors with the sign of the term

is called the coefficient of the product of the other factors.

o Constant Term: A term of an expression having no literal factor is called a constant term.

o Like and Unlike Terms: the terms having the same literal factors are called like or similar

terms, otherwise they are called unlike terms.

o Various parts of an algebraic expression which are separated by the mathematical operators,

i.e., +, -, × and ÷ are called the ‘terms’ of the expression.

o Monomial: An algebraic expression containing only one term is called a monomial.

o Binomial: An algebraic expression containing two terms is called a binomial.

o Trinomial: An algebraic expression containing three terms is called a trinomial.

o Degree of Polynomials: Cubic Polynomial, Quadratic Polynomial, Constant Polynomial, Zero

Polynomial

o Mathematical Operations on Polynomials (Addition, Subtraction and Multiplication)
