KPM Weichmalerei technique (soft painting technique)
Lesson by Birgit Porter

11
- USA
Birgit was hired in 1978 to be a porcelain painter for the Royal Porcelain Manufacturer Berlin, KPM,
which was founded by Frederick the Great King of Prussia in 1763. At the young age of only
16 years she submitted a portfolio filled with intricate watercolor botanicals of her Dad’s colorful
flower garden. After a 3-day long examination which consisted of having to draw still lifes from
life objects, it was confirmed that Birgit would have the dedication, eagerness and skill they looked
for to be selected out of 300 applicants to undergo a 3-year apprenticeship to be a professionally
trained Royal Porcelain Painter.

The following apprentice years were filled with theoretical vocation school training and exciting
practical lessons in Weichmalerei technique, drawing from life such as portraiture, still life, fruit,
plein air landscape in parks and watercolor studies in Berlin’s Botanical garden.

In 1993 Birgit decided to move to the USA and soon was asked to teach. She wrote a book
“Porcelain Painting - Flowers from KPM Berlin” published in 2002. Birgit became a nationally and
internationally recognized award winning artist. Her miniature portrait and flower commissions
are collected worldwide. Birgit draws her inspiration from the natural world and from observing
Universal Principles. Her favorite subjects are portraits in combination with flowers or anything
meaningful to the person. She incorporates knowledge by being a member of the International
Portrait Society of America.

After raising two children, which are her pride and joy, she is now fully devoted to sharing her art
with artists all over the world. Birgit taught in Canada, the Middle East, Tel Aviv, Beirut, Bangkok,
Singapore, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Mumbai. She is invited soon to teach in Southport, UK and
Portugal and is excited to have been picked because of her classical background to teach at the
Seoul, Korea, School and Convention in May 2020.

“This sample is the portrait of Queen Louise of Prussia surrounded in a wreath of flowers. While
teaching at Cazenovia College, NY during the last several years, the peonies were blooming so
gorgeously in June. With colored pencil and watercolor equipment, I sketched them from life. Carol
Utter makes sure that the peonies are at their best bloom
for the banquet by cutting them from her garden and
keeping them in the refrigerator for perfect timing. On
a walk to Cazenovia Lake my eyes caught an ornament
adorning the entrance of a house. I sketched it to include
it into the design made with Raised Paste and finished
with Burnishing gold, polished to a matte shine with fiber
glass brush. The buds of the flowers merge playfully into
the gold ornamentation.” ~ Birgit Porter

Demo on application of raised paste and burnishing gold to the border patterns

• Apply Raised paste for porcelain to the border patterns on the top and fire.
• Apply burnishing gold/Roman gold and, after firing, polish to a matte shine with a glass fiber
burnishing tool.

Demo on paint application in the first fire
• Use a pointed brush to apply colors, use a stippler to soften them. Go over them with a different brush
and a different color to have two colors beautifully controlled. Apply quite heavy so you can wipe out some
colors for highlights.
• Dip brush in turpentine or clove oil, wipe out a little to make room for highlights which, later on, can be
filled in with green so that they become beautiful leaves and shadows.
• Use a stick to sign your name in the dark color area.
• Add clove oil to color, paint grey very softly to areas to see more shadow. Use stippler brush to soften
transition.
• Flowers are painted with 4 colors, darkest and lighter violet, light and dark pink, plus grey and a little yellow
in the darkest area to make colors come to life.

Demo on how to achieve soft blending of one color to another color

• Do outline tracing of the flowers border on the tile.

• Mix paint with 40% German thick oil and 60% powder paint to a very thick paste, apply with a drop of
clove oil as well as turpentine.
• To achieve smooth application, add a little more clove oil, it works very nicely like an open medium. The
advantage is it dries so you can work another layer on top of the first one to save firing.
• Paint a little grey on the petals, after they dry, add purple on them and darker purple to deepen the veins.
• Can use different brushes for the three colors or use the same brush to blend nicely.
• The design is to have a light color flower next to a dark color flower. The light and dark colors support
each other and give a wonderful contrasting element.

Demo on how to mix powder paint with German Fat Oil or thick oil.
• Use very small amount of fat oil. Place it next to the powder paint on a tile. Slowly work it into a very
firm consistency so that all powder paint particles are absorbed in the fat oil.
• Add one drop of clove oil and stir it into the mixture. This keeps the mixture open, easy to paint but
eventually it will dry so it gives you enough time to paint. Store the mixed colors in an ink well and
scoop out when you need it. This way, the colors are not exposed to air and dust.
• Add a tiny drop of lavender oil to make smooth brush strokes when needed, like painting the sky.

Demo on painting
• A lot of work is already done with the tracing, follow the lines to do coloring and it becomes
very easy.
• Paint with a pointed brush, use a little pressure for big area. Make playful and fun looking curves.
Where several lines overlap, make sure one is the focus to separate stems.
• To achieve 3D effect give shadow sides less light, exaggerate it, do not be scared of light and
dark contrast.
• Do as much as you can for the first fire so that there is less detail work later on. This captures
the freshness of the first brush strokes.
• Include large and small shapes in the design to get surprise from wonderful variations of size
and shape.
• Paint the leaf shadows in purple color, just put a light wash of green on top when it is dried.

In Loving Memory of
Adele Ardyce (Powell) Holt
April 7, 1930 – August 30, 2019 (age 89)
Burlington, North Carolina

By Son Michael Holt and Granddaughter Heather Holt Hill

My mother was a strong and independent woman. She believed and taught us kids that the only way to fail was to
quit. I do not believe she ever steered away from a challenge or project regardless of the complexity or danger! My
brother went to visit when she was in her late 70’s and found her in the top of a big oak tree, limbs above the end
of the ladder, with a chain saw preparing to trim out some “aesthetically unpleasing” branches. He got her on the
ground and “borrowed” the ladder which he promptly hid behind the garage at his house.
A good friend of mom’s shared a story with me that described her nervousness on deciding to go to her first
porcelain art show as a seller. I believe it was in the 1970’s and she had prepared her supplies and painted items over
a long time, packed her truck to the very brim, collected her friend and headed out on one of the long journeys she
often made. Along the way she fretted about the possibility that no one would be interested in her offerings and
worse yet she would not make enough money to even cover her expenses.
As it turns out not only was her show a hit but people waited in line to see her art and techniques setting her on
a path of teaching and painting that would become her greatest passion. The story ends with her in the motel on
the final night counting up her take for the show and, on realizing she was a hit, threw the money into the air with an
exclamation of victory.
Through the years she has made many good friends in the porcelain art community, taught hundreds her unique
techniques and shared her philosophy of life. This philosophy is exemplified in the vanity plates on her two cars, one
reads “ILBLATE” the other reads “ILBEARLY”, basically just go for it and rest assured it will all be fine as long as
you do your best! We love you mom, we miss you and thank you for giving us your spirit and passion for life.

I loved art all my life. When I saw the movie, Interviewed by Anna Marie Skonieczny
“Little Women” and saw Amy china painting, I
told my husband that before I died I wanted to
learn how to do that.

The one thing I noticed about china painters

immediately was how generous they are and
how willing they are to share knowledge. No
matter how far a china painter may be, it is
heartwarming to know that you can text and/
or email them and they are always ready to
help.

Learing more about porcelain art was

accomplished by attending seminars,
subscribing to porcelain magazines, buying
books and joining porcelain painting clubs.
For every person, club and magazine, I am so
thankful.

Presently, I spend my days looking at videos,

reading over my notes and painting. After
painting, I post the piece online with hopes
that one or more teachers will graciously give
their opinion, and many do. In addition, my
husband, Stuart, has encouraged me, and kept
my “perfectionism” in check. It is due to the
encouragement of others, determination and
my striving for perfection that keeps me going.
“I am so passionate about porcelain

Melina Fiorella - USA
I am a multi- talented 70-year- old, born in Birmingham, Alabama. I grew up on the Louis
Pizitz Estate; 17 acres in Vestavia Hills, which was the largest estate inside the Birmingham city limits
The estate was surrounded by rose gardens, marble statues, an olympic-sized swimming pool, and
manicured grounds. The home had marble floors, gorgeous beam ceilings adorned with hand-
painted grapes. An artist painted stars on the den ceilings so when the lights were off, the room
resembled the night sky. There was a roller coaster on the side yard and magnificent horses that I
rode daily.

I married at a young age. I have been blessed with 3 children, 6 grandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. The greatest
accomplishment of my life has been loving and raising my children. As a grandmother, I took my young granddaughters to art
class with me. All four girls learned to paint china with me, and I cherish those memories.
I thank God for blessing me with talents to create. I have a passion for china painting, watercolors, French hand sewing,
quilting, knitting, cooking, canning, and gardening and am currently working on a cookbook of my favorite dishes, with
pictures ncluded, to share with my children and friends.
During the past three years, I have been in art school with brilliant, talented, generous art teachers. I have also had the same
china painting teacher for over twenty-five years, and still attend class every week.
In 2013, I received a third-place ribbon at the WOCP convention in Alabama for a portrait vase of my granddaughter,
Melina wearing her first communion dress which I sewed. At the IPAT convention in Las Vegas, I entered a teapot chandelier
and portrait paella platter of my granddaughter, Mason. The convention was fabulously filled with china, costumes, and flags of
all countries. I had so much fun and met many new friends. I am looking forward to attending this event again in 2020.
I thank God and IPAT for blessing me with this great honor to be a part of this wonderful, spiritual journey.

Article by Suzanne Painter

Simona-Marina Braathen - France

Simona recieved her education from Norway. Before moving to France in
1996, her last icon exhibition was in Lillehammer, Norway, representing
the Orthodox Church, as part of the official cultural programme in
connection with the 1994 Winter Olympic Games held there.
She discovered the porcelain painting in 2009 and won her first 1st
prize in the amateur level at the Salon International de Lyon in 2010.
Since then she has become professional and has won many international
prizes, and her work has been published in many different porcelain
magazines in a number of countries.
Simona likes to paint portraits, but her speciality is lace creations. She designs and adapts her lace to the pieces she
is working on, with very intricate and miniscule details. Simona is known internationally for the delicacy of her work,
and she travels a lot for teaching her technique.
In 2015 she was Guest Artist at the 15th anniversary exhibition of the Porcelain Art Master Club (PAMC) in
Tokyo, Japan.
In 2017, she had the chance to attend classes of porcelain making with Nancy Benedetti, an excellent ceramist
and friend, at Suzanne Painter’s school GA seminars by the Sea. She got fascinated by the art of porcelain making,
and in 2018, after having gotten her own kiln, she developed her knowledge in a one-on-one seminar with the well-
known French ceramist Anne Petite. From Anne, she started to learn the traditional Limoges technique.
Simona likes to try out new ideas and techniques, aiming to create her own style. In the autumn of 2019, she’s
presenting her first collection of white porcelain at the PAMC convention in Osaka, Japan.
All the objects shown in the pictures in this article are painted by her on porcelain she has made herself

Fonda Kopski - USA Interviewed by Anna Marie Skonieczny

Like many china painters, Fonda was introduced to china painting by her friends. In 1994,
Fonda’s friend, June Kreuger attended the Tennessee State show in Nashville with Hazel
Givens. Fonda could not go. Fortunately, Fonda was able to attend the next Tennessee
State Show in Knoxville. She was impressed by all the artists’ works so she joined the
Tennessee Porcelain Artists Club so that she could learn more and is currently a very active
member.

Hazel Givens helped both get started in china painting, but

it wasn’t long before they were in search of a teacher and
buying supplies. Fonda’s first teacher was Kathie Mantella.
Unfortunately, after a few small projects Kathie moved out of
state. June found another teacher for Fonda, Novella Caldwell,
who required Fonda to buy the book by Wanda Clapham, “Pass
Me Another Plate”. For Christmas, Fonda’s husband gave her a
kiln and also did the electrical wiring.

Hazel encouraged Fonda to take a seminar with Paula Collins.

Fonda still hears Paula’s soft voice whenever she paints a
similar subject. That seminar was so much fun that Fonda did
not hesitate to take another seminar. Her next seminar was a
portrait seminar with Marci Blattenberger who taught her to
paint a photo of her nephew.

Later, Fonda wanted to learn to paint European flowers so she

arranged a Meissen seminar with Rickie Nishi. Fonda has taken
subjects such as Moriage, Coralene, and tapestry decoration
each year since that first seminar with Rickie.

Fonda is not a teacher but she does teach at club meetings.

In September, she gave a two day workshop to the Decatur
Porcelain Artists on water lilies.

Fonda loves so many things about china painting; the shine of

a finished project, the suspense of what happens in the kiln,
the variations: matt paint on bisque or over glaze, variations
of porcelain pieces, subjects and experimenting including the
different techniques, plus detail painting of the European
flowers. There is always something new to learn: such as
flow enamels by Ruth Cooper. However, her favorite style is
traditional, flowers, fruit and landscapes. Helen Humes was one
of her favorite artists with the softness of her painting.

Painting relaxes her as she can forget everything else and

sometimes so much so that dinner is a burnt causality. Fonda
says that she is “in china painting for life.”

Life has carried me on different roads, receiving me from dental

technician and working for maxilofacial surgical instrumentation for
almost 10 years. But God carried me on another road for this year.
This wonderful art of porcelain has changed my life. In 2015 my
greatest dream of meeting with the artist and teacher, Filipe Pereira,
was fulfilled. This created a “before” and a “later” in my life.

I always wanted to grow and learn as an artist and also with self-
observation. It has been a blessing to be able to train with artists
from different countries. Jane Wright and Nancy Bergman from
the USA, Nelia Ferreira from Venzuela, Xiangbo Yang from China
and Clèlia Almeida from Brazil.

I have discovered a wonderful passion for portraits and semi-

precious stones, relief, gold. Currently I give classes in my studio
of different techniques and portraiture. I thank God for the
wonderful people He has placed on my way and for my family
who supports me day by day.

The art of painting on

porcelain has been a
consuming passion in my life
for over 40 years. Fortunately,
I have been blessed with a
husband who has supported
me in this journey and made it
possible for me to pursue this
career. I am also blessed with
3 wonderful children and 6
incredible grandchildren.

I wrote Fundamental Scenery

Techniques for the China
Painter in 1985 and traveled
throughout the U.S. teaching.
Other subjects I have enjoyed
teaching are tropical fish,
seashells and Dresden or
European-style flowers,
painting on gold and raised
paste work. I have additionally
created two other small books
of instruction and many
patterns to help make painting
on porcelain easier.

Helping others to see how

something is achieved in our
art form is a true joy in my
life and stimulates my own
creativity. My students are as
dear to me as true sisters, and
they are what keeps me going.
