permutations and combinations. (M10SP-IIId-e-1)
➢ Objective: To solve problems involving permutations and combinations.
➢ Title of Textbook/LM to Study: Grade 10 Mathematics Learner’s Module
➢ Chapter: 6 Pages: 283-315 Topic: Permutations and Combinations

Let Us Discover

In this module, you will learn solving problems involving permutations and
combinations. These are word problems related to real-life situations. To understand
further the concept of solving problems involving permutations and combinations use
the given definition and formula as follow:
Permutations – refers to the different possible arrangements of a set of objects. The
number of permutations of n objects, taken r at a time is
𝑛!
P (n, r) =
(𝑛−𝑟)!
, n≥r
Distinguishable Permutations - refers to the permutations of a set of objects where
some of them are alike, q are alike, r are alike, and so on, is given by
𝑛!
P=
𝑝!𝑞!𝑟!…
Circular Permutation - the different possible arrangements of objects in a circle. The
number of permutations P, of n objects around a circle, is given by:

P = (n – 1)!
Combinations - the number of ways of selecting from a set when the order is not
important. The number of combinations of n objects taken r at a time is given by

𝑛!
C (n, r) =
(𝑛−𝑟)!𝑟!
, n≥r

Activity 1: Let’s Find Out
Example 1:
In a PTA General Assembly conducted, three major prizes are at stake. In how many
ways can the first, second, and third prizes can be drawn from a box containing 350
names of parent attendees?
Solution:
- Is the arrangement of order important? Yes
- Then the given problem is a Permutation, therefore you will used
𝑛!
P (n, r) = (𝑛−𝑟)! Where n = 350 and r =3 (First, Second, Third)
Substituting:
350! 350! 350 ● 349 ● 348 ● 347!
P (350, 3) = (350−3)! = (347)!
= (347)!

= 350 ● 349 ● 348

= 42,508,200 ways can be drawn from the box
Example 2:
Given the word CORONAVIRUS. In how many ways can we arrange its letters?
Solution:
Given: n = 11 letters r = 11
- Is the arrangement of order important? Yes
- Suppose these letters are distinct, then the number of permutations is

P (11,11) = 11!
=39,916,800 ways
- If the 2 O’s are alike. We cannot distinguish between the two O’s, so the number
of distinguishable permutation would be,
-
𝑛! 11! 39,916,800
P= 𝑜!
= 2!
= 2
= 19,958,400 distinguishable permutation

Example 3:
Find the number of different ways can a family of 6 can be seated around a circular
table with 6 chairs when the father and mother always sit beside each other.

2 GSC-CID-LRMS-ESSLM, v.r. 03.00, Effective June 14, 2021

Solution:
- If there are 6 members of the family and we make 2, count as 1 for mother and
father. The problem temporarily becomes sitting 5 people on around the table.
P = (n – 1)! by substituting n = 5

P= (5 – 1)! = 4! =
- However, we know that one of the seats counts for father and mother that
always sits beside each other where they can arrange themselves in 2!
Therefore: N = 4! ● 2!
= 24 ● 2
= 48 ways
Example 4:
In a 10-item Mathematics problem solving test, how many ways can you select 5
problems to solve?
Solution:
- Is the arrangement of order important? NO
- So, this is a problem of a combination of 5 problems to solve out of 10 given
mathematics problems.
By substituting n = 10 and r = 5
10! 10!
C (10, 5) = (10−5)!5! = 5!●5!

3,628,800
= (120)120
= 252 ways

Activity 2: Let’s Do it
Answer the following problem completely with the guide questions.
Problem 1:

The mall provided a parking space for bicycles. In how many different ways can 6
bicycles be parked if there are 8 parking spaces provided?
- Is the arrangement of the bicycles important? _______
- The number of permutations of n = ___ objects taken r = ___ at a time is

𝑛! ____!
P (n, r) = = P (__ , __,) =
(𝑛−𝑟)! (____−____)!
- Simplifying:

-

Therefore ____ bicycles can be parked to ____parking spaces in _________ways.

Problem 2:
You are about to display 12 pieces of canned goods in a row on the shelf. If there are
3 identical cans of tuna, 4 identical cans of corned beef, 2 identical cans of sardines,
and 3 identical cans of meat loaf, in how many different ways can you display these
goods?
a. Is arrangement of order important? ________

b. Are there objects alike? ____ what are those? p = ___ q = ___ r = ___t = ___

c. What kind of problem is given, is it a permutation or combination?

________________________
d. What formula are you going to used?

e. By substituting and solving, how many ways you can display this goods?

Problem 3:
From 50 students of Grade 10 section David, how many ways can you nominate 12
class officers?

- Is the arrangement of order important in the nomination? __________

- What is the value of n? ______ What is the value of r? ______
- Solve for the number of ways how you can nominate 12 class officers out of 50
students in the class of grade 10 David.
