Use the Modals MIGHT, MAY or COULD to say something is possible in
the present.

NOTE: Normally, we use the verb BE after a modal


to refer to present possibility.

NOTE: If you decide to use VERBS, make sure that
the sentence refers to an idea in the present.
Present Possibility
Use the Modals CAN'T to say something is impossible.

Subject + can't (be) + complement.

She can't be 20 years old. She's just


finished school.
My mom can't be calling me on the phone. She's
in a meeting.

NOTE: Don't confuse the adverb His friend didn't answer the phone.
"Maybe" with the modal Maybe he can't answer, or he may be
verb "may be". busy at work.

The Tunguska Mystery

It was early morning, June 30, 1908, in eastern Russia. Suddenly, a terrible
explosion rocked the forest in Tunguska. People fell to the ground, and all the
trees for 2000 square kilometers were knocked down. People heard the
explosion 800 kilometers away, and the fire burned for many weeks. What
caused this terrible explosion? A century later, scientists are still trying to
find the answer.
5 WRITING

 A topic sentence tells the reader
the main point of the paragraph.

the paragraph. It should be short
and clear.
