Class Reflection
March 17,2022

Through this Intra-Professional Competence course, I have had the opportunity to learn

and grow both personally and professionally. The discussions we had in class, the online

discussions, and the assigned readings have all helped me learn more about this topic. Going into

this class, I was unsure as to what it would bring to further my education and knowledge to the

field of psychology. The two topics that truly stood out to me in this course was the reflection

section and growth mindset. I have never stopped and actually thought about self-reflection up

until this class. In every part we discussed, I picked up new vocabulary for ideas I already knew

but didn't fully grasp.

Self-reflection is defined as the ability to see and evaluate your thinking, emotional and

behavioral processes. Reflecting on why you think and act the way that you do. I found that self-

reflection helped me not just with myself these last seven weeks, but also with my career. I

work with patients who have disorders that have an impact on both their behavioral attitudes

and cognitive thinking. This topic has been helpful to me in working with my clients because,

according to one of our readings by James Bailey, when we use coping strategies like journaling

or writing prompts, we need to go back and add to it at the end of the day in order to reflect on

what we wrote. That really stood out to me. It has never occurred to me; instead, I always write

something down and set it aside without giving it any thought. I now inflict this to my clients

and have seen little progress on how they look at themselves after doing so. I love that I am able
to utilize what I have learned to better myself but for my clients as well to help them grow as an

individual.

The last semester's learning and motivation course from this program would be the best

choice for tying self-reflection to another course. I think this link is important because, when

you reflect on yourself, you have the ability and incentive to improve yourself and feel good

about what you are doing. Also, I believe it is related to Edward Deci's self-determination theory

of competence. Your daily psychological requirements, autonomy, and the self-direction you

take from other views and informational language all depend on your ability to function. We

mentioned SBI statements when talking about motivation and autonomy in learning; I still use

them with my clients today. I will use self-reflection for my future self to be the best that I can

be for my family, co-workers, but more importantly to have the self-love and worth for myself.

Together with learning and motivation, another topic discussed in this class was growth

mindsets. I like talking about development mindsets and learning to understand them better.

With my clients, I use a variety of workbooks, games, and exercises to teach them about growth

mindsets and how to adopt one over the other. In this lesson, we discussed the advantages it

has for both our daily lives and our jobs. According to statistics in an article we read, depression

is the main contributing reason to mental health problems among college students, who score

lower on mental health scales. We talked about how your mental health affects not only your

daily life but also your academic performance, graduation rates, and gender disparities. Two

quotations that we discussed in learning and motivation classes that I now enjoy are "How you

adopt your life, will affect how you lead it" and "The power of yet." Carol Dweck's study was

made up of two decades' worth of material and how you should manifest it at an early age and
that children taught at a young age will adapt into adults willing to experiment. The brain is

something that will forever be my favorite study to learn about and these concepts have helped

along the way.

All things considered, I find self-reflection and a growth mindset to be quite beneficial,

and I would want to learn more about them as well as share this knowledge with my clients,

coworkers, and family members. During our online and in-person talks, I was able to learn what

other classmates believed, and this truly helped me see how I needed to adapt and adjust my

own behaviors. The ability to relate this to my work has been really beneficial, and I appreciate

learning more about any of the subjects that have been covered over the past seven weeks.
