Ch 3: The Derivative

x3 + 8 dy
Example 2: For y = 2 , find .
x +x dx
Solution:

dy ⎛
d x +8
3 ⎞
d 3
dx
( x + 8)( x 2
+ x ) − ( x 3
+ 8) ⎛⎜ d
⎝ dx

x2 + x ⎟
⎠ ( )
= dx ⎜ 2 ⎟ =
dx ⎝x + x⎠ ( x 2 + x) 2

3x 2 ( x 2 + x ) − ( x 3 + 8) (2 x + 1)
=
( x 2 + x) 2
3x 4 + 3x 3 − 2 x 4 − x 3 − 16 x − 8 x 4 + 2 x 3 − 16 x − 8
= =
( x 2 + x) 2 ( x 2 + x) 2
In this case, the algebraic division of x 3 + 8 by x 2 + x will not change the
present form to a simpler form. Therefore applying the quotient rule is
easier than trying to change the form of the function.
