The art of Storytelling

SYNOPSIS

Anna lives in Barcelona and has a simple life: she ended

university and has a job that she doesn't dislike, but she is
not completely satisfied. The unexpected visit of Victor, her
younger brother, will force her to go back to her hometown to
take care of him and meet again with people and memories she
thought she had long since buried. There, Anna will rethink
various relationships and find herself, while trying to
discover where she really belongs.

MAIN AND SECONDARY THEMES

The self in conflict with the past; Sibling relationships;

Family relationships; Reconciliation with one´s hometown;
Lost friendships.

MAIN CHARACTERS DESCRIPTION

- Anna (24, white) Anna lives in a shared flat in Barcelona.

Despite having studied Audiovisual Communication, she works
as a receptionist. Her mother and brother live in the village
where she grew up, a town lost in the province of Lleida,
Spain. Anna's father, with whom she has no relationship
whatsoever, is in prison. In the city, she only has her
friends and her boyfriend, Marcos.

She is not shy, but not too outgoing either. She is the
typical older sister who has never been a troublemaker and
has always fitted in perfectly both at school and in society.
At times, she feels that she has never been given the
recognition as a daughter that she feels she deserves.
Extremely perfectionist, but messy. She is afraid that the
expectations of her life in the city are not being fulfilled
as she imagined and she is afraid of stagnating and
suffocating.

Anna feels an enormous responsibility towards Victor and

wants to live up to it because she knows she is an example.
They don't have the trust that two siblings who have been
together for fewer years could have, but they count a lot on
each other. They don't understand each other at all but there
is a great feeling of protection; they would give their lives
for each other.

- Victor (15, white) Anna's younger brother. He is in his

2nd-year at the local secondary school and is not sure what
he wants to do when he finishes his studies. He loves
drawing, playing the drums and riding around the narrow
streets of the village on his skateboard.
2.

He always wears tracksuit bottoms. Nail biting is their way

of channelling their nervousness. In fact, he is a
hyperactive child who needs to be constantly on the move.
Sometimes, this impulsivity leads him to aggressiveness. He
also smokes, but his mother doesn't know it. For all these
things, as well as for having a group of punk friends, he is
often labelled in the role of "bad guy". The reality,
however, is that he is not as bad as he may seem.

The protagonist's little brother suffers from a brutal

feeling of inferiority. He has dyslexia and TDH, which is why
he has never been excellent at school - where, moreover, he
was always compared to Anna. Victor doesn't believe in
himself and doesn't see himself as capable of getting to
university - except for his mother, who is a bit
overprotective of him. The paternal relationship is a
question that also torments him; the fact that they compare
him with his biological father or find any similarity between
him and his father has him completely terrified. Thus, the
young man feels that he is not good at anything beyond being
the "badass" and the funny one, and that is why he clings to
these labels. But the reality is that Victor, although he is
not very smart, is very intelligent emotionally. Moreover, he
is very creative - even more so than his somewhat selfish
sister -. Perhaps the fact that he shuns the norm so abruptly
has to do with his desire to differentiate himself from Anna,
whom he admires but knows he will never be able to
assimilate. The rules affect him and he knows he should
follow them but, on impulse, he breaks them. This, together
with the fact that he always goes with the flow, means that
Victor often does things that, if he thought about it a
couple of times, he might not do. His rebelliousness comes
partly because he is an impressionable person who is affected
by what others think of him.

- Cristina (52, white): mother of Anna and Victor. She is a

very determined and hard-working woman. She divorced her
first husband before he went to prison and, since then, has
done everything she can to support the family. She is very
proud of Anna but she is very worried about Victor, sometimes
leaving her eldest daughter a little to one side and focusing
all her thoughts on him.

- Elisabeth (24, white): village girl of the same age as

Anna. At the same time, she has a brother who is the same age
as Victor and belongs to the same group, Albert. She works as
a shop assistant and gives revision classes to children in
the village. In high school, she was Anna's best friend; we
could even say that they became more than just a friendship.
When our protagonist went to Barcelona, Elisabeth was very
touched and her possible romance was left untreated. She
3.

feels stuck in the village and without aspirations. She is

envious of Anna. On the other hand, she empathises strongly
with Victor and tries to guide him so that he doesn't get
into so much trouble.

ACT I
_____

FADE IN:

1. EXT. BARCELONA STREET. NIGHT

Many cars are passing near the Agbar Tower, some entering the
city, some leaving it.

A train passes by.

2. INT. OFFICE. DAY

ANNA (24, white) collects all the belongings from her desk
and puts them in her backpack. It is very tidy. As soon as
she zips it up, she puts on her coat and scarf and pins up
your hair with a clip. The table is empty and ANNA heads for
the exit door.

On the way, she stops to say goodbye to her coworkers, who

are also putting on their coats.

COWORKER 1
Have you taken everything? Don't leave
anything behind.

ANNA nods her head.

COWORKER 2
Come and visit us when you come back,
eh? Don't forget about us.

The guy and the girl approach ANNA and the three of them walk
towards the exit of the building.

COWORKER 2
Aren't you afraid to go to work and
live so far away?

COWORKER 1
(Grabs ANNA's arm)
We're going to miss you so much. What
will the days be like in this
suffering of a job without you?

ANNA
(Smiles)
That's precisely why I want to leave.
But don't worry, you can come and see
me for Christmas. But you pay your
way.
5.

All laugh about it.

3. EXT. TERRACE. NIGHT

ANNA is on the terrace of a bar with three other people. They

are all drinking beer except her, who is drinking water. They
are chatting when ANNA feels her phone vibrate. She stops
paying attention to the conversation to see what it is about.

"MOM" is calling. She looks at the screen for a few seconds,

hesitating to pick it up, but decides not to. When she puts
the phone away again and returns to the group, everyone has
their bottles raised.

FRIEND 1
Well, for Anna, she's going to Korea
and we won't see her again.

The members of the table laugh and toast. ANNA joins in the
toast and drinks from her water.

FRIEND 2
At least you still have three weeks to
do things around here and say goodbye
to everyone.

FRIEND 3
Will your mother accompany you to the
airport?

ANNA
(looking at the ground)
I haven't told my family yet.

The friends are silent and look at ANNA surprised.

FRIEND 2
Are you not going to tell them?

ANNA
(touches her hair, uncomfortable)
I want to, I just haven't found a
moment to call them. Anyways, has...

The group chat and laugh about another topic in the

background.
6.

4. EXT. STREET. NIGHT

ANNA walks down the street. She looks at her mobile and sees
that her mother is calling her again. She turns the phone off
and puts it in her pocket. She looks up and sees a boy
sitting on the floor in the doorway of her house. As she gets
closer, she recognises him. She stops in her tracks when the
boy looks up and looks at ANNA.

ANNA
Victor, what are you doing here?

VICTOR (15, white), without saying anything, stands up and

hugs ANNA very tightly. When they separate, ANNA looks at him
and frowns.

ANNA
What happened? Is mum all right?

VICTOR
(Looking at the ground)
I'm hungry.

5.INT. BUILDING LOBBY. NIGHT

ANNA and VICTOR wait for the lift in silence, not even
looking at each other. The lift arrives and the doors open
halfway. ANNA pushes the door all the way open and VICTOR
helps her. They enter the lift but the doors do not close
when the button is pressed. ANNA huffs, get out of the lift
and climb the stairs. VICTOR follows her. They say nothing to
each other.

6. INT. ANNA'S FLAT. NIGHT

ANNA is talking on the phone, walking from one end of the

dining room to the other.

ANNA
(with lots of gestures)
Yes, don't worry, he's fine. He is
with me now.

VICTOR is sitting on the sofa, eating yoghurt and looking at

ANNA. Next to him, there's Anna's FLATMATE (25, Latina)
watching a drama on her computer.

ANNA (CONT'D)
(raising her voice)
No, he hasn't told me much about why
he is here. You are the one that
7.

should know, not me. Tomorrow I'll

bring him back, ok?

Anna's FLATMATE averts her eyes to ANNA, VICTOR, and the

computer distinctively. Resigned, she aggressively closes the
computer and goes to her room. VICTOR does not flinch. He
stares at a moving box and grabs one to play with it. ANNA
says goodbye to the person on the phone and hangs up. She
looks at VICTOR and crosses her arms. VICTOR looks at her.

VICTOR
Does your roommate move out?

ANNA tries to downplay and gets the box out of her brother's
hand.

ANNA
Don't touch other's people's things.
Go to put your pyjama on.

7. INT. ANNA'S ROOM. NIGHT

ANNA lies on her back with her eyes wide open. She hears
music coming from her flatmate's room in the background. She
grabs her mobile to check the time - on the screen, there's 4
am- and puts it back on the table. She changes position
several times but can't succeed. She stands up and goes to
the living room.

VICTOR is sleeping on the sofa with headphones in his ears

and his phone turned on in his hands. Carefully, ANNA turns
off the phone and puts it away. She stares at him and sighs.

8. INT. ANNA'S CAR. DAY

ANNA and VICTOR are in the car, on their way to their

hometown. Remain silent.

ANNA
How's high school going?

VICTOR just shrugs his shoulders.

ANNA
What do you mean by that?

VICTOR
I mean that I don't know, normal.

ANNA
You are not going to explain to me why
8.

did you come to Barcelona?

VICTOR
I got expelled.

ANNA
For doing what?

VICTOR
I don't know.

ANNA
Yes, you know, c'mon.

VICTOR
(sights)
I don't know!

VICTOR takes a cigarette and a lighter out of his pocket and

prepares to light it. He rolls down the passenger's window.

ANNA
What do you think you are doing?!
Don't even think about it! I don't
know when did you start smoking, don't
care, but not in my car.

VICTOR sights and puts them away. As soon as he rolls up the

window, ANNA turns on the radio. It plays "Carolina - MClan".
Both siblings start unintentionally humming and singing the
song softly, without interacting with each other.

9. EXT. CAR. DAY

The car arrives at the small town. They walk past a large,
century-old tree, which is surrounded by candles. VICTOR
watches carefully how an old lady lights one and leaves it at
the foot of the tree. As they walk past, he follows it with
his head. A motorbike passes by.

ANNA
(looking at the motorbike)
Not excited about getting your
motorbike licence?

VICTOR
I guess.

They arrive at the main entrance of the family house.

CRISTINA (52, white) waits to greet her two children, leaning
against the door. When they get out of the car, she goes to
9.

hug ANNA. VICTOR tries to run away into the house, but the
mother stops him.

CRISTINA
What were you thinking young man?! You
are grounded for life, you hear me?!

VICTOR doesn't even stop to hear, enters the house and goes
up the stairs. CRISTINA sighs and puts on a smile.

CRISTINA
(to ANNA)
Thank you for taking care of him
tonight. How's the work in the city
going? And with Marcos? How is he?
Anyways, you tell us now at lunch.

ANNA
Everything alright, mum.

Both enter inside.

10. INT. FAMILY'S HOUSE.DAY

ANNA sets the table for lunch while CRISTINA is watching the
oven, waiting for lunch to be ready. In the background,
VICTOR is playing the drums in his room.

ANNA
Have the school confirmed, then, that
he will be expelled?

CRISTINA
You'll tell me... Make graffiti in the
main entrance it's pretty serious. But
this is not an isolated case, Anna.
Last week he got into a fight with the
son of the baker.

The noise from the drums increases.

CRISTINA (CONT'D)
(Getting anxious)
I can't even go to buy bread now
without hearing the whispers of the
neighbours. And tonight he wants to go
to a town party, god knows what new
crimes he will commit. If he continues
like this he will turn like his-

ANNA wants to reply but a sound from the drum plate surprises
10.

both. CRISTINA bangs a blow on the table and runs upstairs.

ANNA gets tense and looks down. Unintelligible cries are
heard and the sound of the drums ceases. CRISTINA comes back.

CRISTINA
Anyways, do you have any plans for
today?

ANNA
Actually no, I don't know, maybe-

CRISTINA
(interrupting her)
Can you stay tonight in the town? You
can go to the party too and keep an
eye on your brother.

ANNA
Mum, I'm not his babysitter.

CRISTINA
Anna, please, do it for me. Also, you
can see your town friends too. I'm
sure Elisabeth will be there. It's
been a long time since you don't see
each other, am I right?

CRISTINA takes the food from the oven and shouts to VICTOR to
come down.

ANNA
(gulps)
Elisabeth? Is she still in town?

CRISTINA
She was doing private classes for some
kids, your brother included. But all
of the sudden, one day she quit.

ANNA makes a quizzical face and sits down to eat.

11. EXT. ELIZABETH'S STREET. NIGHT

ANNA walks through the streets of the village, with no clear

direction. She stops in front of the door of one of the
houses. She stands still for a few seconds and finally
knocks. A middle-aged white man opens the door.

MIDDLE-AGED MAN
(smiling)
Anna! Long time no see!
11.

ANNA
Hello. I was wondering if Eli is
inside.

MIDDLE-AGED MAN
Actually no, sweetheart. She met her
friends, but I'm sure she will go
later to the party next to the big
tree.

ANNA
I see. How's everything going?

MIDDLE-AGED MAN
Everything is alright. Albert is
failing less and less, but, you know,
he's being through puberty. I hope it
passes soon ja ja. And Eli, well,
(pause)
She's not in her best moment right
now. But I'm sure she'll be very happy
to know that you're here.

ANNA nods and puts on a compassionate face.

ANNA
Sure, sir, I can't wait to meet her.

MIDDLE-AGED MAN
I'll tell her that you came. See you
around.

ANNA
Thank you. See you!

The man closes the door and ANNA turns around and walks
decisively.

12. EXT. PARK. NIGHT

ANNA arrives at the big three plaza, which is surrounded by

groups of young people drinking. There are still the candles,
all lit. She wades into the crowd and recognises old friends
from the village, whom she waves to from afar. She sees
ELISABETH (24, white) in the distance and approaches her.
When ELISABETH feels a slight knock on his back, she turns
around and is surprised to see ANNA.

ELISABETH
(without smiling)
Oh, hey.
12.

ANNA
Hey.

ELISABETH
(Uncomfortable)
What are you doing here?

ANNA
Actually, I was walking by and my
parents told me about the party-

ELISABETH
What are doing in the town, I meant.

ANNA
(tense)
Oh, I had some family drama, not very
important. You know how annoying
brothers can be.

ELISABETH
Yeah, I guess.

In the middle of the conversation, a boy appears behind

ELISABETH and hugs her from behind, saying things into her
ear. The girl smiles.

ANNA
(Uncomfortable)
Uhm, my mom also told me about your
private classes. I didn't know that.

The boy kisses her neck, and ELISABETH seems to pay more
attention to him than to her. She turns around to ANNA
without smiling.

ELISABETH
(grimly)
What a coincidence, I didn't know
anything about you either.

ANNA hesitates for a moment. ELISABETH and the boy start

making out in front of her. Annoyed, ANNA walks away.
ELISABETH watches her leaving.

13. EXT. PARK. NIGHT

ANNA walks through the crowd, not quite sure where to go. She
watches VICTOR next to the big tree with a group of guys
older than him.
13.

VICTOR
(drunk)
Come on, man. Just give me one. I have
money, I can pay you.

All the boys laugh at him.

GUY 1
(teasing at Victor)
Mmmm, I'm not sure. How old are you?
Are you not a little bit young to
smoke, you weirdo?

VICTOR
I'm eighteen.

GUY 2
(laughing)
Sure, eighteen. C'mon kid, leave us
alone.

VICTOR
(insisting)
Please, give me just one cigarette.

ANNA approaches them and grabs VICTOR's hand. He shouts words

and makes gestures without any sense. She realises that he
has a bottle of vodka in his hand and that he is drunk.

ANNA
(annoyed)
Can you explain to me what are you
doing?!

VICTOR
Don't shout at me!

ANNA
How much have you drunk, Victor?

VICTOR
Can people stop shouting at me?! Leave
me alone.

ANNA takes the bottle of vodka from VICTOR's hand.

ANNA
(throwing the bottle at the floor)
Do you want to end up like dad?

VICTOR lunges at ANNA, pushes her to the ground and runs away
14.

in a rage. ANNA stands up, shakes out his clothes and leaves
the park with tears in her eyes.

14. INT. ANNA'S ROOM. DAY

ANNA is in her bed, just woke up. From her window, she sees
something that catches her attention: a column of black smoke
coming from the big tree square.

15. EXT. PARK. DAY

ANNA drives through the village. She passes the square and
what she sees makes her stop dead in her tracks. Two elderly
ladies are standing in front of the big tree, which is
completely burnt down. One of the ladies bends down and picks
up a completely burnt candle. She turns her head and looks at
ANNA steadily. The horn of the car behind makes the girl come
to her senses and drive on. The mobile phone rings and ANNA
picks it up.

CRISTINA (V.O.)
(very altered)
Anna! Do you know where Victor is?

ANNA
He didn't come back home last night?

CRISTINA (V.O.)
No, he didn't. Oh god, not again.
Please, Anna, helps us to find him.

ANNA hangs up the phone and hits the steering wheel with a
lot of anger.
