Global Citizen Essay 1
Global Citizen Essay 1
ASGL has taught us students how to use IB Learner profiles throughout our personal and
school life. The mission of ASGL is to prepare us for the real world and face the challenges that
come along with it. There is a lot of diversity and we are always being exposed to many parts of
the world which help us be more open-minded and better people. They also provide many
opportunities for us to keep learning and be more knowledgeable throughout our lives. ASGL’s
vision has taught me to become more globally aware and prepare me for my future.
A global citizen is someone who genuinely cares about helping not just themselves, but
others as well. It is someone who isn't afraid of being a risk-taker and takes many chances to
make the world around them a better place and speak up for what they think is wrong. Someone
who I believe is a great example of a global citizen is Lizzo. Apart from being an artist, she is a
feminist who believes in body positivity and self love. She not only advocates it through her
music but she openly speaks about it in interviews. She is Knowledgeable because she speaks on
her own experiences and knows exactly what to say to teens suffering from low self esteem and
provides a safe space for them. I believe she is also a risk-taker because she is not afraid to speak
up at any time. Whether she is on stage or on live, she will take the risk of speaking up about any
social issue that she feels needs to be called out or even just about body positivity and she is not
afraid to show off her body and look good in anything she wears.
Becoming a global citizen takes a lot of hard work and although I am not fully there yet,
my time at ASGL has helped me improve more as a global citizen. I have learned to reflect on
my past experiences and I've realized that I have grown more as a person and gained more
confidence in myself. It was not easy getting to that point because as someone who has always
struggled with their mental health, it was harder to reach my full potential because I believed it
couldn't get any better than that. It had taken a lot to get out of that negative state of mind but as I
communicated about how I felt with the people around me, they helped me get out of that hole I
was stuck in and helped me be the best version of myself I could be. What also helped me grow
more as a person and as a student was joining cross country because it taught me to be more
open minding about working together and seeing that everyone has potential in them. Being at
ASGL has shown me that it is okay to get out of your comfort zone and sometimes believing in
people is all that person needs to be the best that they can be. I still have a lot to learn about
being a global citizen but with time I hope I could further improve and help out my community
even more.
I will contribute more on the global stage in my near future by always remembering to
keep an open mind and show how much I care about what happens to the world around me.
ASGL has opened me up to diversity which is a great help in my career path because it includes
working with many different people and I will always know to keep an open mind about every
person's culture. Not only will I know to keep an open mind with future patients that I will have,
but it will help in the long run with meeting new people and keeping friendships and
relationships strong. Showing that I care for people I have met and will meet, will open me up to
new experiences and I hope I can make a small impact on the people around me. I would not
have been able to get to where I am today and where I will be in my near future if it weren't for
ASGL exposing us to the real world and teaching us to not be afraid of taking risks.
Being globally competent is essential to students around the world because it will allow
them to grow and be prepared for what the real world has to offer. ASGL can help shape their
overall prepare them to be college ready. I definitely have grown more during my time at ASGL
and by using the IB learner profiles, I have learned what it means to be a global citizen and I
