CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Technology influences the way of people interact, read, and think. In society
today, It plays a significant role, digital devices have made our lives apparently easy
wherein we use different social media platforms to communicate effectively. Effective
communication is the process of exchanging ideas, thoughts, opinions, knowledge,
and data so that the message is received and understood with clarity and purpose.
When we communicate effectively, both the sender and receiver feel satisfied
(Coursera, 2022). Communication occurs in many forms, including verbal, non-
verbal, and written skills.

Social media is a wide platform for many people that can help with their daily
lifestyle. According to (Bhamare, 2018) cited that social media is becoming a vital
tool for daily social interaction. It creates an opportunity for people to interact with
each other in a way that is both helpful and essential to socially motivate people.
Furthermore, social media is described as the collection of online communication
channels dedicated to community-based input, interaction, content sharing, and
collaboration. With the help of social media apps, it can share memories, reconnect
with friends, plan events, and communicate almost instantaneously. Social media
has positive as well as negative impacts on communication skills.

People are very much aware that communication is the life blood existence
and realize how important it is in their lives. Communication is not technically just
about exchanging information. It is more about being able to understand the emotion
and intentions behind the information. To communicate well is to understand, and be
understood (Bequiri, 2017). A vital life skill and one that should not be
underestimated is the ability to convey information correctly, simply and as expected.
Being able to clearly convey a message or listening in a way that makes the other
person feel heard and understood. By learning these, it can deepen your connection

to others, build greater trust and respect, and overall social and communication
skills.

In a student’s perspective, predominantly to Grade 12 Humanities and Social

Sciences (HUMSS) Senior High Students, social media plays an important role and
becomes a communication tool for them. They use social media to communicate
with their classmates and teachers. In addition, using social media may develop
effective communication skills. By the advent of social media, a new way to promote
everyday knowledge and connectivity needs has been enabled. On the other hand,
as described, communication skills are important tool for individuals to effectively
transmit or receive messages and information in a clear and concise manner.
Effective communication requires learning some important skills (SkillsYouNeed,
2020). Furthermore, developing communication skills can help all aspects of life,
from the professional life to social gatherings and everything in between.

The researchers want to determine the impact of social media in terms of

students effective communication skills. Moreover, researchers ought to know their
preferred social media platforms. As a result, the study aims to identify the effective
communication skills of Grade 12 HUMSS Senior High Students and their usage of
social media.

Theoretical Framework

Goffman's presentation of Self Erving Goffman's 1959 book.

An Archetypal Theory symbolic Goffman's interactionism forms is the

foundation of this research. Goffman's presentation of self Erving Goffman's 1959
book. The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life provides a detailed description and
analysis of the process and meaning in everyday interaction and introduces the "way
to present." This concept was chosen for its potential relevance to the use of social
media on effective communication skills. When someone appears in front of others,
regardless of the specific goal they have in mind, generally, he will mobilize his
action for a reason to make a statement to others that are in his best interest to
make. The idea behind interaction is that it is viewed as a "performance," shaped by
Page | 3
STA. LUCIA HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

the surroundings and the audience, and designed to give others "impressions" that
are in line with the actor's intended objectives. The appearance of action is the main
topic of Goffman's book. It is entirely appropriate to use the analogy of Cartesian
dualism, in which the world is compared to a space or territory that the thinking
subject will control. The relevance is supported by the statement that "this control is
primarily attained by influencing the definition of the situation that the others come to
formulate.

This theory of Goffman's presentation of self about the study's research

problem aids in supporting and providing a comparison to how a person presents
themselves and the use of social media in efficient communication. Social media is
similar to a play in which actors perform and take on different roles. It is all about
how one presents themselves, how one manages their impressions, and how one
tries to act by the plan to become an effective communicator.

Conceptual Framework

The impact of social media on effective communication skills is a recurring

topic of discussion. Online communication has allowed information to reach people
and audiences that were previously inaccessible. It has raised people's awareness of
what is going on in other parts of the world. This study seeks to educate students on
alternative methods of communicating effectively through social media.

The variable being studied was presented using an input-process-output

conceptual framework. The "input" variables were the social media platforms used
by the respondents, as well as their effects on their effective communication skills.

The following box contains "process" variables, which includes the instrument
and method validation, interview, survey questionnaire distribution, data collection,
and interpretation.

The final section will include "output" this is composed of the objectives and
possible results at the end of the study which are to inform the students as well as
the parents and teachers about the impact of social media usage on effective
communication skills to the Senior High Students of Sta. Lucia High School, Pasig
City.

Statement of the problem

This qualitative research study purposely intends to determine the impacts of

social media usage on the effective communication skills of Grade 12 Humanities
and Social Sciences students in Sta. Lucia High School.

Specifically, it sought to answer the following questions:

1. What are social media platforms do the respondents always use?

2. What is the function or usage of social media to the students?
3. What are the effectiveness of social media in enhancing communication skills
in terms of:
3.1 Verbal skills
3.2 Non-Verbal skills

Definition of terms

The following is a list of terms that will provide meaning in order to understand
the contents of the study:

Archetypal Theory. Archetypal criticism argues that archetypes determine the

form and function of literary works. (Delahoyd, 2002)

Communication. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, it is a process by

which information is exchanged through a common system of symbols, signs, or
actions between people. Thus, can be defined as understanding and sharing
meaning (Bequiri, 2017). It is used as an introductory for this study.

Communication Skills. Essential in order to rapidly and accurately deliver and

interpret data. Being able to communicate easily is a crucial ability in life and should
not be ignored (Bequiri, 2017).

Effective communication. It’s about understanding the emotion and intentions

behind the information. As well as being able to clearly convey a message

Page | 7
STA. LUCIA HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

Information. It is the information acquired from research, study or instruction. As

well as, message received and understood.

Interactionism. A theoretical perspective that derives social processes (such as

conflict, cooperation, identity formation) from human interaction.

Mass media. Mass media means technology that is intended to reach a mass
audience. (Study.com, 2015)

Non-verbal Skills. transfer of information through the use of body language

including eye contact, facial expressions, gestures.

Phenomenology. The science of phenomena as distinct from that of the nature of

being (Plato.stanford.edu, 2003)

Skills. It is the ability to do something well (Oxford Dictionary, n.d.)

Social Media Platform. Known as the lovechild of the World Wide Web which
comes in many forms such as blogs, forum, photo-sharing, social gaming, chat apps,
and social networks (Clement, 2020). Specifically, those are Facebook, Twitter,
Google+, YouTube, Instagram and a lot more. In this study, it is used to determine
the social media platforms that the respondents use.

Theoretical Framework. The structure that can hold or support a theory of a

research study. (USC Libraries, 2020)

Verbal Communication Skills. Effective skills in verbal communication require

more than just talking. Verbal communication concerns both how you send
messages and how they are interpreted by you (Doyle, 2020). In this study, it is one
of the effective communication skills that the respondents acquire with the use of
social media.

Written Communication Skills. According to Inc.com, written communication

includes any kind of communication that allows the use of written word. In this study,
it is one of the effective communication skills that the respondents acquire with the
use of social media.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

A few books, articles and unpublished studies were used as reference to

gather data that would help the researcher conceptualize this study. These are
presented in succeeding pages.

Related Literature

Social media has so much to give to Filipino people. It helps people find ways
to discover recent news or information. Through the use of the internet, everyone
has access to social media, which is a form of communication. People interact,
communicate, and work together as if they were in a social setting using a
combination of websites and applications (Digital Marketing, 2018). We can use
social media to improve our communication skills and social connections. Through
social media sites, we can make new friends, exchange ideas, develop new
interests, and try new things.

According to the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (2021) social

media has become an essential part of people daily communication activities from all
walks of life and has globalized its use, particularly among students. English is the
primary medium of instruction, it has an impact on students English communication
skills, particularly in writing. The study looked at the relationship between social
media exposure and English writing proficiency among senior high students in the
philippines.

A result from the study of Lyceum of the Philippines (2018) who found out that
social media have a great help to the students an education. It is used by the
students to interact with each other and is one of the most used communication tools
of today. Social media provides an easy and effective way for students to
communicate, socialize, and improve their cognitive skills. They also stated that
students can gain knowledge and skills by using social media in their daily activities.
Page | 9

It can help students improve their social skills by allowing them to communicate with
other people online. Students can also use social media to keep up with current
events around the world.

Social media effects on verbal communication and other aspects of

interpersonal interaction. He asserts that in a culture where talking to people online
and sharing excessive amounts of information is the norm, you are probably more
likely to communicate with friends and family over mobile devices than in person.
With the help of social networks, communication and interaction barriers have been
broken down, allowing people to express their opinions and ideas on a variety of
topics. (Submanian, 2017). Furthermore, as studied by Talaue, et.al, (2018),
concluded that students can access more relevant information, connect with study
groups, and access other convenient educational systems through the use of social
media in the classroom. Students and institutions have many opportunities to
improve learning methods.

According to Blaylock (2018), indicated that social media create new

opportunities for students education. The way people write or communicate is one of
these effects. Nowadays, people have adapted to shorter, more concise messages
by writing summaries. Abbreviation is common in texting, where it has caused
debate among some scholars and has been the subject of cited studies due to its
detrimental effects on literacy skills like writing ability and reading accuracy. In
keeping with that, we are interacting with and reaching out to an increasing number
of people in this social media era. We can use each level of communication more
expertly and effectively the more we accept it and recognize its significance.

As researched by Hopkins (2020), cited that through the use of technology,

such as social media, the world is becoming smaller. It makes sense that the
widespread use of social media to share ideas, experiences, and interactions has a
big impact on how people communicate in general today. It is thought to have a
negative impact on adolescents’ communication and social skills. Additionally, the
majority of kids and teenagers now regularly use different types of social media
(Fuller J, 2020).

Page | 10
STA. LUCIA HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

According to (Bhamare, 2018) observed that since technology is constantly

changing, some people are accustomed to recognizing their friends online avatars as
their faces. As already mentioned, social media can be a fantastic resource for
students' education. Consequently, it works well as a tool for improving academic
performance. In addition, it helps them write more succinctly and clearly; this can
also result in an improvement in their social skills and their capacity to use social
media for educational purposes (Bruce, 2020). In line with that, according to
Hopkins (2020) added that when used properly, social media and education can be
complementary. One of the factors influencing the impact of this technology on
education is the technology that makes it possible for these platforms to operate.

Related Studies

The results of the study by Ademiluyi, et al. (2019), showed among other
things that social media use significantly improves students communication skills.
The study has the potential to have a significant impact on teachers and students by
empowering them to recognize, accept, and use social media as a tool for learning,
teaching, and developing new skills. It was suggested, among other things, that
teachers should encourage students to use social media to gather essential
information. This findings is similar to that of (Magmanlac & Caiga, 2018), who found
out that educational benefits of social media are enormous. One of the most popular
forms of communication in use today are used by students to interact with one
another. Furthermore, the findings shows that Facebook is the most popular social
media site that students utilized and they agreed that social media affects them
positively.

According to Dantuono (2020), one of the most visible effects of social media
on society is social communication. People need social skills and interaction to be
successful in life. The article also discusses how social media can improve peer
relationships. One of the facts is that it can frequently connect the person with their
peer, which can improve the relationship. The article then concludes that social
media should only be used correctly to maintain relationships, social skills, and

Page | 11
STA. LUCIA HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

communication abilities. Social media is similar to a drug, but its adaptability makes it
especially addictive (Berger, n.d). It adapts according to your preferences and
behaviors, which increases its usefulness while also making it more interesting,
engaging, and addictive.

In a research study conducted by Asemanyi (2015), discovered that learners

would help improve their output in and course by being respectful of each other’s
idea and adjusting to new teaching methods or techniques used in this case
communication skills. Another recommendation for the research was that the
communication skills course helps students a lot in the job market, especially in
interviews, so it would be beneficial if students took the course seriously and worked
hard on it. Again, communication is critical in all aspects of human life, and as such,
everyone should learn good communication skills.

In addition, social media is becoming an important communication skills, with

the advent of social media, a new way to promote everyday knowledge and
connectivity requirements has emerged (Christell et al., 2020). As described,
communication skills are an important tool for individuals to effectively transmit or
receive messages and information clearly and concisely. Effective communication
requires learning some important skills (SkillsYouNeed, 2020). Developing
communication skills can help all aspects of life, from professional life to social
gatherings and everything in between. However, it opens one’s identity to the world
wide web making young learners exposed to different cyber threats” (Antonio, 2020).
Likewise, social media as a tool for collaboration and communication could defeat its
purpose if not used properly and may cause serious problems.

According to Baruah (2020), who found out that one of the most significant
benefits of using social media is the online sharing of knowledge and information
among various groups of people. This online sharing of information also promotes
the improvement of communication skills among people, particularly among learners
and students of educational institutions.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter contains method of research, population, sample size, and

sampling technique, description of respondents¸ research instrument, data-gathering
procedure, and the statistical treatment of data used in the conduct of this study.

Method of Research

In this study, the researchers selected the most appropriate design. This
study is qualitative research design as it aims to seek an in-depth
understanding of social phenomena with their natural setting. McCombes S,
(2019) stated that descriptive research design aims to accurately and
systematically describe a population, situation or phenomenon. It can answer
the questions of what, where, when¸ and how, but not why. The research
design is descriptive which will use survey questionnaire that focuses on the
impact of social media usage on effective communication skills of grade 12
Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) students in Sta. Lucia High
School.

Population, Sample Size and Sampling technique

The number of respondents for this study were fifty (50) senior high students
from Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) in Sta. Lucia High School.
The researchers select three (3) sections of respondents from both sets. It aims to
determine the impact of social media usage on effective communication skills using

simple random sampling. According to Lauren (2020), a simple random sample is a

randomly selected subset of population. Wherein it involves taking samples of a
population subdivided into groups. In this case, the selection of respondents was
based on the HUMSS strand specifically in HUMSS 1 (Set A and B), 16
respondents. HUMSS 2 (Set A and B), 18 respondents. HUMSS 3 (Set A and B)¸16
respondents.

The respondents were given the questionnaire-checklist that will help the
researchers to determine “The Impacts of Social Media Usage on Effective
Communication Skills of Grade 12 Humanities and Social Sciences Students
in Sta. Lucia High School.”

STA. LUCIA HIGH SCHOOL
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL

The respondents were the grade 12 HUMSS (Humanities and Social

Sciences) students of Sta. Lucia High School who are officially enrolled during the
first semester of School Year 2022-2023. There are three sections from HUMSS
strand in both sets. The researchers chose the HUMSS students as the
respondents as they are the one who has effective communication skills.

Research Instruments

The researchers used a questionnaire as the primary instrument for this study
to provide additional information. To clarify, a survey is a research method for
gathering and analyzing data from a group of people, whereas a questionnaire is a
specific tool or instrument for gathering data (Bhandari, 2021). The given
questionnaire is in the form of a checklist and was divided into three parts consisting
of items that elicited the effectiveness of social media in communication skills under
indicators such as Verbal, Non-verbal, and Written skills.

The Grade 12 Senior High School students in Humanities and Social Sciences
scored the indicators using a likert scale, which has four points. The researchers
used the mean ranges and their interpretations, with the responses being: 4 for
"Excellent," 3 for "Good," 2 for "Average," and 1 for "Poor."

Table 2

The researchers made a letter of request asking for permission to the teachers
and research adviser of Sta. Lucia High School to conduct a study about the impact
of social media usage on effective communication skills to the grade 12 HUMSS
students.

The researchers will distribute consent letters to the respondents, who will be
grade 12 HUMSS students. After receiving consent from the respondents, the
researchers will hand out an 18-items survey questionnaire and carefully explain
some important reminders and instructions on how to complete the survey. The
instructions were carefully read by the participants. The researchers supervised the
questionnaire collection to ensure the validity and accuracy of the information
obtained after each question was fully answered.

As shown in the table three (3), after the analysis data revealed that
Facebook was the most utilized social media platforms by the students which have a
frequency of 39 or 27% percent. It has been discovered that only a few have used
YouTube and TikTok, with a frequency of 29 and 26, respectively, and both having a
percentage of 20%, while Instagram and Twitter have a frequency of 26 and 17,
respectively, and a percentage of 18% and 12%, Others has a frequency of 5 and a
percentage of 5%. a

This indicates that Facebook has become the most widely used social media
platform for students to improve their communication skills.

Table seven (7) shows the data on social media use in terms of written
communication skills. It demonstrates that when it comes to written communication
skills, each of the three (3) statements on the influence of social media revealed a
different weighted mean. The number sixteen (16) statement had the highest
weighted mean of 3.44 and was ranked first, followed by the number eighteen
statement with a weighted mean of 3.42 and was ranked second, and statement
number seventeen with a weighted mean of 3.36 was ranked third.

After analyzing the data, it was discovered that using social media improved
students written communication skills, particularly when it came to being more aware
of grammar and spelling. The table shows that students agree on the influence of
social media on written communication, with an overall weighted mean of 3.41.
