“Genres”

Literature is a collection of written works. Traditionally, the term has been applied to
visionary works of poetry and prose differentiated by their writers' goals and the perceived
aesthetic brilliance of their execution. Language, national origin, historical period, genre, and
topic matter are some of the systems used to classify literature.

In this week’s lesson we tackled the genres of literature. The main genres are poetry and
prose. In order to evoke emotion or to express setting and plot, a poem uses rhyme, rhythm,
and meter. There are numerous varieties of poetry, including ballads, haiku, verse, and haiku.

A piece of writing should be written in a conventional, uncomplicated style to be

classified as prose. Instead of following a meter or verse rhythm, it will adhere to grammatical
structures. There are two types of prose, fiction and nonfiction.

The creation of genres gives authors broad organizational frameworks that they can use
to plan what they say and when they say it. In order for readers to more readily understand what
they are about to read, genres help arrange information.
