Compatibility
Refer to the following table to determine the versions of Harmonic software this version of SystemManager
supports.
SystemManager Services
The installation of SystemManager takes care of setting up several programs to run in the background as Windows
Services. Since Release 5.9, an additional service was added: the Flex Service, which is an Apache 2.x web server
running on port 8080. This service must be running in order to launch the Performance User Interface (UI) for
Harmonic MediaGrid. Installation takes care of configuring this new service. After launch of the Performance UI,
the UI gets its data from the SystemManager service, which is an extended Apache 1.3 web server running on port
80. In some cases this port information may be of importance. Following is a list of all the services:
• Flexlm License Manager
• Network Time Protocol Daemon (optional)
• FlexService
• SystemManager (the core service for SystemManager)
• Portmap (a service locator for RPC services)
• SNMP Service
• vDHCP DHCP Server (optional)
Additional information is provided in the Harmonic SystemManager Installation Guide, regarding disabling the
SNMP Trap Service as well as special procedures for Windows 2003 Server operation (disabling IIS and extra steps
for SNMP configuration).

Spectrum, MediaDeck, ProBrowse, ProXchange, and Harmonic MediaGrid firmware is not included directly in the
SystemManager download files. To install release notes, documents, and firmware for Spectrum, ProBrowse,
ProXchange, or Harmonic MediaGrid, additional downloads will be needed. After installing SystemManager, start
with the Release Notes download for each system software product you have in your site.
Important! Before installing SystemManager, make sure the computer on which you plan to install does not have
any other web server (for example, SQL Server Reporting Services, or IIS) running on it.
To access the Harmonic SystemManager Installation Guide, you must first install the SystemManager-
v5.27.0.0.Documentation.exe file.
From this point on, follow the installation and configuration steps in the Harmonic SystemManager Installation
Guide, which shows the progression of screens displayed by the installer. Some sections (for example, for SNMP,
FLEXlm, vDHCP, and NTP) may be skipped depending on the prior content on the system.
Be sure to also perform the configuration steps to setup FLEXlm, vDHCP, and NTP. Customers with a new
installation must perform the configuration steps to avoid networking and/or system issues.
Important! Set up DHCP services correctly! Running vDHCP on the SystemManager PC is not compatible with
running DHCP services on other systems in the same network. Conflicting DHCP servers can cause the IP address
of a device to change when the device reboots or when the DHCP lease needs to be renewed. Running with no
DHCP server in a network can cause devices to stop responding after the device reboots or when the DHCP lease
has expired, unless of course static IP addressing has been configured.

If SystemManager needs to provide DHCP services for the network, it is important to review the vDHCP service
settings after installation or upgrade. Make sure the vDHCP service is set to Automatic in the Services control
panel, and Start the vDHCP service if it was not left in the Started state when the installation/upgrade completed.
If SystemManager does not need to provide DHCP services, make sure the vDHCP service is set to Disabled or
Manual (or not installed at all). Then Stop the vDHCP service if it was left in the Started state when the
installation/upgrade completed.
Next, continue with the installation/upgrade procedures for the system products in your network:
• For Spectrum upgrades, follow the upgrade procedures in the Spectrum Release Notes.
• For MediaDeck upgrades, follow the upgrade procedures in the MediaDeck Release Notes.
• For Harmonic MediaGrid upgrades, follow the upgrade procedures in the Harmonic MediaGrid Release Notes.
• For ProBrowse upgrades, follow the upgrade procedures in the ProBrowse Release Notes.
• For ProXchange upgrades, follow the upgrade procedures in the ProXchange Release Notes.
Contact Harmonic Support for upgrade planning or to discuss specific configuration or interoperability issues.
Because there may be subtle differences in interaction with third party applications, Harmonic recommends on-air
customers consult with third party providers before upgrading the Harmonic system to this new release to verify
operation of third party applications prior to on-air use.
After upgrading the SystemManager, upgrade all managed systems to supported release versions.
Feature Configuration
New feature configuration is described below.
Independent Branding
Independent Branding (IB) is a licensed feature. The IB feature is enabled in SystemManager as part of the
secondary output configuration on the ChannelPort Channel Properties page, as shown below.

In the example shown, primary assets would need to be placed in /fs0/gfx.dir, and IB SD (secondary) assets would
need to be placed in /fs0/gfx.dir/SD. You can also differentiate between primary and SD assets by specifying
different asset extensions. In that case, all assets in this example would need to be placed in /fs0/gfx.dir.
Enhanced Channel
Enhanced Channel (EC) capability is a licensed feature. The EC feature is enabled in SystemManager from the
ChannelPort Properties page as shown below:

Selecting the Enhanced Channel checkbox will result in the following change.
Note that any time EC mode is enabled or disabled, a full ChannelPort reboot is required to fully effect that change.

In standard channel mode, the available sources from the Mixer Source drop-down menu are:
• DecodeOutput1: the output of the second clip decoder; what would have been the ‘Channel B’ clip decoder
in standard mode
• SdiInput1: The second SDI input for this channel, or what would have been the ‘Channel B’ SDI input in
standard mode.

The required parameters include the layer to be used for the slate (Harmonic recommends choosing a layer not used
for any other purpose in the overall branding look) and the file name of the asset to bring up when this event is
activated. This name must not include path name elements; assets are assumed to exist in the graphic directories, as
described above.
1. Associate a GPI event name with the physical hardware, as shown in the following figure.
2. From the Edit Player page, click the GPIO Trigger button to open the Change GPIO Player
Configuration page where you can configure the GPIO Trigger function.

3. Select Edit GPIO Player Configuration to configure the association between the Event name and the
ARC control function as shown below.

4. Configure the desired mix for each profile. Note the following:
• Profiles are used when loading clips on the timeline. Refer to the updated Player API specification for
details.
• Profile 0 is the default profile and is only applied to SD output.
• Profiles 1-7 can be applied to HD and SD output.
• Profiles are not order-specific, meaning any or all may be configured.
