In the previous module, you learned the life and works of the different 20th century
composers and their different musical styles in their compositions. You also learned
their contributions to the Philippine music.

Here, you will discover who are the New Music Composers. You will be able to identify
their works, musical styles, and contributions to the music industry.

The modern Filipino repertoire consist of pieces that have been written in twentieth
century idioms that have evolved out of such stylistic movements as impressionism,
expressionism, neo-classism, as well as the so-called avant-garde and New Music.

Philippine new music is compositions that are improvisational works. A good number of
these works have utilized the standard formats of classical European music such as the
concerto, the symphony, the symphonic and tone poems, but has remained its thick
Filipino culture specially improvisations of indigenous music.

Week 3-4

In this lesson, you are expected to:

you learn from him.

What’s In

In the previous lesson, you get to know some of our new music composers, their musical
styles, compositions, and contributions to Philippine music. You have heard some
examples of their songs and learned how they incorporate their love for country as they
express their feelings and moods and showcase the rich culture of the Philippines.
Philippine contemporary music is categorized into three parts: (1) traditional music,
(2) new music, and (3) song composers.

In this lesson, you will discuss the third topic: song composers. Now, you will be
acquainted with the different song composers of Philippine contemporary music, their
musicals styles, and major compositions.

What’s New/What Is It

Philippine music has truly evolved from its indigenous roots to its contemporary form. It
was a mixture of different musical movements and influences. Some of the musicians and
composers are a product of these different musical thoughts from the West and was
fascinated by different dynamics and harmonies. But they were still able to create their
own harmony depicting Filipino spirit and culture.

When talking about song composer, he a musician who is can author of music in any
form, including vocal, instrumental, electronic music, and music that combines multiple
forms. On the other hand, a composer could be a lyricist and one who creates the melody
out of the lyrics made. Below are the different song composers in the Philippines.
