VBR to VBR/CBR Example ........................................................................................... 11

Feature Description
Electra encoders now support both VBR and CBR output for the same program on a
single encoder. For example, the encoder provisioning VBR DToIP services can now
directly output CBR IPTV services. Previous versions of NMX were not able to provision
VBR and CBR services unless the CBR services flowed through a multiplexing device
such as ProStream®.

This feature is supported on:

 Electra 8200\8300\9200
 NMX 7.0 and above
 IP output only for CBR output and M/W output. (VBR output is supported on
ASI/IP/RF).

Using NMX 7.0 and above, you can now configure the following:

 The VBR service is one output from the encoder, in a DiviTrack Pool controlled by a
ProStream as the multiplexing device.
 The CBR (and Mobile/Web on Electra 8300) services are IP output, and are directly
output from the Electra encoder without using any multiplexing device.

Feature Highlights
CBR output can be added with no disruption to existing DToIP (DiviTrack Over IP)
services:

 No need to stop/start the server.

 No changes to DToIP network map objects—you add a new icon for the CBR
output.
 No changes to VBR output.
 No changes to Cross Connect IP configuration—you may need to add ports for
the new output.
 All CBR services can share the same output icon.
 The PSI icon must be linked to each encoder in the following cases:
o Case 1: DiviTrack Broadcast VBR + encoder Mobile/Web MBR output
(Electra 8300 only) output
While no PSI is required for MBR output, if you need to see HRTP
intermediate traffic with PSI information you must link the PSI to each
encoder.
o Case 2: DiviTrack Broadcast VBR + encoder Broadcast CBR (+ encoder
Mobile/Web MBR) output.
To get PAT/PMT flow on the Broadcast CBR, you must link the PSI to each
encoder.

Important: When adding a link between the PSI icon and the encoder doing CBR
output, the same link connection between the PSI icon should be done to ALL
encoders on the MAP, even to the encoders that do NOT have CBR output.

 Each encoder must use a different MUX group, and the MUX group must be different
than that used by the VBR service.

Additions to the NG Map
1. Add an IP output icon that is connected to the Cross Connect. (The default number of
outputs from a cross connect is two. You may need to increment the outputs in the cross
connect properties page to match your service requirements.)
2. If the encoder needs to generate PSI (for example, to monitor intermediate traffic), the
PSI icon needs to be linked to ALL encoders on the MAP, even to the encoders that do
NOT have CBR output.

PSI icon connects to ALL encoders

Add output icon for CBR output

All other NG settings remain the same. There is no need to deactivate services to add
the CBR output.

For Electra 8300 Mobile/Web services, CBR and/or multiscreen M/W output from the
encoder is not connected to the packager in the same NG.

5
Additions to the Service Plan
Add an output transport for each CBR service and assign a different mux group than
that of transport that contains the VBR service.

For CBR services, each encoder must be on a different mux group.

For example, assume that the two main Electra encoders have VBR output on a
transport to Mux Group 001. You would add the following:

Electra 01

VBR to Mux Group 001

CBR to Mux Group 002

Electra 02

VBR to Mux Group 001

CBR to Mux Group 003

In this example, the Service outputs tree looks like this:

8
Connecting the Services to the NG Map
In the Connect Services To Network Element dialog, you connect both CBR services to
same output card.

The encoders now output both the VBR and CBR streams.

9
VBR to VBR/CBR Example
This example shows an existing service map with three Electra encoders (two main and
one backup). The output from the encoders is DToIP (VBR).

To add a CBR service to this service map, you must update the NG map and the
service plan, and connect the services. These changes are described in the following
sections.
