Configuring ProStream Audio Leveling
Introduction
Jünger Level Magic™ Audio Leveling on the ProStream 1000 ACE device lets you
automatically adjust your audio level to achieve a constant loudness level for service
content (for example, between commercials and programs). When enabled, the fields
for setting the adjustments appear on the NMX GUI.

Level Magic is a sophisticated adaptive level control algorithm, integrated in the ACE
card, that:

 Enables continuous control of the desired audio level, between or within services
(regardless of the source), without touching the sound of the audio
 Preserves audio quality with no artifacts
 Allows you to set and forget; you can select the target level per channel or for the
entire headend
 Requires audio transcoding

The audio signal is leveled to the desired operating level instantly through a
combination of the following:

 An adaptive AGC (Automated Gain Control)—common industry algorithm

 A transient processor
 A brickwall limiter for continuous unattended control of any program material

The combination of an AGC circuit with a transient processor produces a satisfying

output level control solution for any kind of input level changes. The transient processor
fills the lack of fast-level control left by the slow-acting AGC. The total gain of Level
Magic is the addition of the gain by the transient processor and the gain of the AGC.

Level detection provides comparable measurements for voice with the old ANSI S1.4
method, but provides a far superior measurement for music and effects. It is adaptable
to “short-form” as well as “long-form” measurements (ads, as well as program material).

Configuring Audio Leveling

From the NMX GUI page for your audio stream, configure Level Magic-Audio Level
Adjustment (ALA).

Enable Audio Leveling

Under Output-Processing, select the check box to enable Level Magic-Audio Level
Adjustment. The Level Magic-Audio Level Adjustment section appears.

Configure the Input Gain

Under Level Magic-Audio Level Adjustment, configure the Input Gain (dB). Input Gain
allows you to configure the input signal level towards the target loudness level that
streams into the ALA module. You may configure this parameter if the input loudness
level is received distorted, and you need to fix the audio level before the ALA
processing module. Configured values: between -20 to +20dB in steps of 0.1dB

Input Gain (dB). The fixed gain adjustment applied before dynamic leveling processing.
Enter an input gain value in decibels if a fixed gain adjustment is desired. This gain
applies to all audio channels contained in the audio stream.

Configure the Leveler/Loudness Target (LKFS)

The Loudness Target allows you to configure the desired output loudness level in LKFS
(Loudness, K-weighted, relative to Full Scale). A unit of LKFS is equivalent to a decibel.
This is the main parameter when configuring the ALA processing module. Default =24.

Loudness Target (LKFS). The loudness target for Level Magic audio processing,
measured in LKFS per ITU-R BS.1770. The default is -24.

Configure the Limiter/Max Peak Level (dBFS)

The Limiter/Max Peak Level (dBFS) guarantees precise peak limiting without any
distortion.

Max. PeaK Level (dBFS). The maximum loudness level. Dynamic audio level
adjustment processing will ensure that audio loudness is below Max Peak Level. The
default is –6.

Audio Leveling Adjustment Density

The density of audio channels for 1 ACE card in the ProStream 1000 device with Audio
Leveling is depicted below. Multiply by 4 to calculate density for a device with 4 ACE
cards.
