DEPARTMENT OF METALLURGICAL AND MATERIALS ENGINEERING

Course Name: Materials Selection and Design; Course Code: MM1602

Maximum Marks: 30; Duration: 2 hrs; Instructor: Dr. S.K. Vajpai

Note: Attempt All Questions. Elaborate your answers with necessary schematic
diagrams, wherever necessary. Use Appropriate/suitable Material-Property-Charts
wherever required. Attempt all parts of a question at one place.
1. (i) A component is at present made from a brass. Suggest three other metals, in same shape,
that would be stiffer than brass.
(ii) Identify material with both a modulus, E > 50 GPa and a density,  < 2000 Kg/m3.
(iii) Identify materials (including metals) that are both stiffer and less dense than steels.
(iv) Identify materials with both modulus, E > 100 GPa and (E1/3/) > 0.003 GPa/(Kg-m-3).
(v) The design of a cycle safety helmet requires a lining that will crush at a stress of 8 – 12 MPa
and be as light as possible. Select an appropriate class of materials to meet this need.
(Please provide a proper justification for your choice of material, i.e. how did you reach
to your choice?) [2x5 = 10]

2. Elaborate the concepts and importance of Performance Metric and Material Indices in material
selection. Explain with suitable and well elaborated examples as to how these concepts are
efficiently incorporated in the material selection procedure. [10]

3. (a) A furnace is required to sinter powder-metal parts. It operates continuously at 650oC while
the parts are fed through on a moving belt. You are asked to select a material for furnace
insulation to minimize heat loss and thus to make the furnace as energy efficient as possible.
For reasons of space the insulation is limited to a maximum thickness of x = 0.2 m.
(i) List the function, constraints, objective and free variable.
(ii) derive a material index for selecting the material for the insulation.
[5]
(b) A storage heater captures heat over a period of time, and then releases it, usually to an air
stream, when required. Those for domestic heating, store solar energy or energy from cheap
off-peak electricity and release it slowly during the cold part of the day. What is a good material
for the core of a compact storage material capable of temperatures up to 80 oC and a defined
storage capacity? Interpret “compact” to mean “of minimum volume”.
(i) List the function, constraints, objective and free variable.
(ii) derive a material index for selecting the material for the insulation.

Mid Semester Examination
Course Code: MM1603 Course Title: X-Ray Diffraction and Electron Microscopy
Date: 8/3/2022 Day: Tuesday
Course Instructor /Instructor in-Charge Dr. Poulami Maji
Duration: 02Hour OPEN BOOK Max. Marks: 30
INSTRUCTIONS:

1). Answer all questions.

2). Marks of the question are indicated in the right hand margin.
3). Missing data, if any, may be assumed suitably.
4). Before attempting the question paper be sure that you have got the correct question paper.

1. β filters for chromium K α . radiation are made of vanadium foil. Calculate the
thickness of vanadium foil required to reduce the intensity ratio of the K β to the K α .
radiation to 1/100. given that the ratio of the intensities in the radiation from the X-ray
tube is 1/5.1.
Mass absorption coefficients of vanadium for chromium K α and K β radiations are 77 and 510 cm2 gm-l
respectively. Density of vanadium = 5.6 gm cm-3.

(5)

2. Calculate the linear absorption coefficient of calcium carbonate CaCO 3 for

molybdenum K α . radiation given that the mass absorption coefficients for
molybdenum K α . radiation of calcium, carbon and oxygen are 19.8, 0.70 and
1·50 cm2gm-1 respectively, that the density of calcium carbonate is 2·8 gm cm – 3, and
that the atomic weights of calcium, carbon and oxygen are 40, 12 and 16 respectively.

3. A transmission Laue photograph is taken of an 1rthorhombic crystal whose unit cell

has dimensions a = 3·5 Å, b = 3·0 Å and c = 2·5 Å. The crystal is oriented so that the
a-axis is parallel to the horizontal incident X-ray beam with the positive direction
towards the X-ray source, the c-axis is vertically downwards and the b-axis is parallel
to the film which is perpendicular to the incident beam. Find where the (1 0 ̅2)
reflection strikes the film, if the film is 5 cm beyond the crystal, and the wavelength
of the X-rays reflected from the (1 0 ̅2) planes.

Given: The expression for interplanar distance and interplanar angles in orthorhombic system are

and respectively.

4. The absorption edges for strontium occur at the wavelengths indicated below:
K : λ = 0·770 A
L I : λ = 5·58 A
L II : λ =6·18A
L III : λ = 6·38 A
Draw an energy level diagram for strontium and indicate on it the energy values.
Calculate the wavelengths of the Kα1 and Kα 2 lines in the X-ray spectrum of
strontium and show the corresponding transitions on the energy level diagram.
Planck's constant = 6.62 x 10-27 erg sec
Velocity of electromagnetic waves = 3 x 1010 cm sec-l
