Ali Latif Shushtari

Villolarino
(2020)
For Violin, Cello, Bass Clarinet in Bb and Piano
Introduction

This composition is a musical representation of one of the oldest Iranian

traditions called “Chaharshanbe Suri”. This event takes place at the eve of
the last Wednesday of each year before “Nowruz”. In this celebration,
Iranians light a fire and cherish the beginning of the spring. They ask the
fire for health and happiness. This ceremony is also a celebration of
freedom and the end of the “Zahhak” dictatorship, a cruel king who is the
symbol of evil in the mythological history of Iran.
Explanation

Bass Clarinet in Bb:

Natural harmonics; It is better to at least reach the third one.

: Breathing through the instrument with changing of dynamics.

: Going up and down with perfect fourth and triton intervals. Choice is up to the performer.

Piano:

: Using a Soft big heavy mallet. As this sign is seen, performer should hit on the strings and start
moving on them according to the score.
: Performer should hit the left edge of the string section as she/he moves on the strings. If there
was no circle around it, performer should only reach the lowest possible pitch of the section without
hitting the edge. All of this applies for the right side if the arrow is headed up.

: Exaggerated vibrato on strings, when using the mallet or the steel sphere.

: Cluster. Aggressive!

: Using a soft small mallet on strings.

: Using a wooden stick on strings.

: Circular movement on the strings.

Note: The movements on the piano strings are not exact and should be defined more clearly depending on
the type of the piano and it’s level of accessibility of the strings. The Notation lines below can give a more
level of certainty.

Violin and Viola:

esp: extreme sul punticello

: Rapid displacement on finger board.
