Senior business people we meet tell us about the exponential changes they face in their business and technological
environments. To stay competitive, some invest in hardware. Some invest in software. Others downsize.

The smartest invest in people.

They know the key to competitive survival lies in hiring people who can translate the power of technology into
solutions for business challenges... people who have both the technical expertise and the management skills
needed to make creative solutions a reality.

Master of Management in

Information Technology

Our programme is ideally suited to a broad range of professionals, including

business analysts, solution architects, project managers, IT managers, consultants
and IT directors – people for whom the development of both IT and general
management skills are essential.

The unique, competency-based structure of the Master of Management in

Information Technology (MMIT) puts you in control of the IT management
competencies you wish to develop – competencies that bring the power of
theory to your specific real-world needs.

Local doesn't cut it anymore. Those who advance in their careers have a
strong understanding of how business is done internationally, how to work
effectively as a member of a virtual team that comes together from all
over the world... This will be the experience in your U21Global programme
– understanding international issues in a truly global forum.

Our degree programme structure is flexible enough to fit the needs of a wide
variety of IT professionals. Shorter Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma
programmes offer valuable credentials in their own right, and also offer multiple
entry points towards the full MMIT because all subjects are designed to ‘ladder’;
credits earned in one programme can be used in later work in another
programme. And the timing is as flexible as you wish it to be.

“When I reflect upon my own work experiences with Accenture, ICL-Fujitsu and
Logica, the people who really stood out were those who viewed technology as
a powerful tool for business, and could see a roadmap for managing the technology
with the organisation.”

Do you want to memorise facts and figures? Do you want lectures, passive
learning and surface understanding? Are you content to have others create
the question and handhold you through the answer?

Then this is not the programme for you.

You work in a knowledge economy, where success will not be measured by

test scores or reproduced lecture notes. Your success will be measured by
your ability to make sense of the information around you – to grasp the issues
and transform the information into knowledge and creative solutions.

Our programme is for you if you want to learn how to sort through the 'noise'
in the business challenges you face, and grasp the underlying, fundamental
issues to be addressed. It’s for you if you want to learn how to use technology
to access the best information available to help you design effective solutions.
And if you want to learn how to implement your solutions creatively, using
the experiences of other international students.

“The Professors’ academic and professional experience is really inspiring as they

consider us to be their colleagues rather than simply their students. The way the
course is conducted by the professor is really motivating and makes the dialogue
and exchanges between us more productive and mutually interesting. I am enjoying
the very open-minded and rich interaction with my classmates and professors that
I have had.”

As a U21Global student, you join a learning community that is truly global.

Our students are located all over the world, as are the professors you will
work with. You'll be interacting and networking in a way that's just not
possible within traditional forms of education – experiencing diversity in
viewpoints, thinking and culture that will enrich and broaden your
understanding.

You'll use a wide range of collaboration tools to interact with your peers
and professors – not only email, but also online discussion boards, online
chat, audio-conferencing and video-conferencing. In fact, many students
find that they experience a much higher level of personal interaction using
such tools than in a traditional learning environment.

Our online courseware is written and reviewed by leading professors who

are experts in their field. With the help of our learning design team, the
courseware has been developed specifically for the online environment
– with instructional design quality second to none.

You will have access to a full set of online learning resources as part of the
total learning experience. In addition to our course content, business cases,
simulation exercises, articles and data, you’ll be given 24/7 access to our
extensive online library of learning resources, so you don’t need to waste
your time looking for research materials.

"In U21Global, group assignments or discussions are ‘virtualised’. I have classmates

all over the world in an online discussion group. Best of all, discussions are posted
online and recorded. How much can you recall or absorb the ideas discussed after
participating in a physical discussion group?"

Ler Soon Chong, U21Global Graduate

System Engineer (Singapore)

How you learn as a student of U21Global is very different from your past learning
experiences. We believe that students learn best when they form their own
understanding of a subject, and all our courses are developed around this
principle.

We employ a problem-based, case approach that is professor-facilitated and

highly interactive. Our materials are current and reflect the latest workplace
issues and challenges. Our learning environment is inclusive, authentic and
most importantly – relevant to the needs of the business management student.

assessment The U21Global MMIT programme uses a range of assessment instruments,

that's real world including interactive self-assessment activities within the courseware, review
questions and exercises. Discussion boards are an important component of
our learning design, providing students with a rich opportunity to share ideas
and discuss issues and challenges with other students. Team-based case study
assignments and projects foster more interactivity and expose students to the
skills needed for successful management of international, multi-site teams.

Every subject concludes with an 'open-book, open-web' (OBOW) final

examination which takes the form of a 'mini-case', brought to life by hyperlinks
and multimedia. The student plays the role of a key decision-maker in the case,
faced with delivering an authentic, consultancy-style report.

“I get the benefit of learning from the quality content of U21Global but I’m also
being exposed to global business and leadership practices across different cultures.
No other graduate degree can offer me the geographic reach from locations such
as Europe, the US, China, India and beyond. Whenever I log on to my U21Global
campus, I feel like I’m in a global classroom.”

organisations towards sustainability. The subject examines the role played by chief
executives, business managers, employees and other stakeholders as change agents
for sustainability.

DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND APPLICATIONS (2640) provides an

understanding of the functionality of databases and their role in modern business
environments. Students are introduced to relational conceptual data modelling,
database design, implementation issues, data management and advanced
database applications. A fundamental knowledge of such concepts equips students
to effectively deploy a commercial database management system in response to
the needs of a business organisation.

DIGITAL COMMUNICATIONS, NETWORKS AND SECURITY (2620) provides an

overview of the process of adapting the corporate network infrastructure to the
rapidly changing business environment. Students explore the architecture of digital
systems, with emphasis on structural principles common to a wide range of
technologies. The focus is on the practical application of new network and data
communication technologies and the implications that these technologies have
for the organisation’s information processing capabilities and information security
management.

eBUSINESS (650) presents the key concepts of electronic business (eBusiness),

focusing on business issues, challenges and opportunities. The emphasis is on the
business applications and characteristics of technologies that can bring enhanced
revenues, cost savings and broader market reach to organisations of all types. The
subject examines how eBusiness can be used to provide opportunities to improve
an organisation’s effectiveness and competitiveness in its overall strategy and
functional activities (such as marketing and supply chain management) through
communication, co-ordination and transactions over the Internet and associated
technologies.
3-495_MMIT1-30 5/8/08 7:57 PM Page 19

ENTERPRISE KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT (751) provides students with an

understanding of the practical skills for managing the creation, transfer and utilisation
of corporate knowledge as a competitive asset. Students are introduced to the
three core elements of knowledge management and their relationships. The
importance and characteristics of organisational knowledge, the basic knowledge
processes, and various organisational and technological factors influencing the
implementation of knowledge management in an organisation are examined.
Students learn how to plan, develop and implement knowledge management
initiatives in an organisation.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS PROJECT MANAGEMENT (2800) provides students with a

sound understanding of project management theory and a comprehensive set of
best practices for information systems project management. The subject is designed
to help students manage change at work, co-operate with stakeholders and
generally be aware of the complex socio-technical environment in which information
systems are delivered and used. The subject provides an overview of the activities
involved in an information systems project, from project proposal and adoption
through system analysis and design, software production and testing, and
implementation and maintenance.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS SECURITY (3000) provides a firm grounding in security

concepts that enables students to interpret security requirements and assess their
impact. Security is consistently rated as a major concern of consumers and
corporations alike in the use of the Internet and technology for conducting business.
The need to provide high levels of security and create trusted business relationships
is a priority for many organisations. Topics include security management, cryptography,
access control, network security, application security, operations security, physical
security, incident management and business continuity planning.

INFORMATION SYSTEMS STRATEGY (771) provides students with an understanding

of the contemporary technological and organisational issues involved in the
management of information technology resources at a strategic level. The role of
information systems in providing competitive advantage and the frequent need for
business re-engineering that accompanies adoption of new technology are discussed.
Strategic IT planning and the evaluation process to ensure proper alignment of
technology to business goals are also explained. Global IT issues are also considered.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SYSTEMS FOR BUSINESS (770) is designed to familiarise

students with the fundamental concepts, theories and frameworks in the management
of information systems. The subject provides students with an overview of the
organisational context for information systems. Information systems architecture,
information systems development process, knowledge management, enterprise
information technology, virtual organisations and the alignment of information
systems and information technology are examined.
3-495_MMIT1-30 5/8/08 7:57 PM Page 20

IT OUTSOURCING AND VENDOR MANAGEMENT (2810) highlights the potential

benefits and risks of information technology outsourcing. The subject presents methods
and techniques to select the right vendor and to manage outsourced IT projects. It
provides the essential skills and expertise needed for the successful implementation
of outsourced IT projects by getting it right from the start and managing it well to the
end. As more and more organisations outsource the development and implementation
oftheir IT applications, the skills required to manage an outsourced projectis crucialfor
the success of the project.

MANAGEMENT OF SERVICES (760) provides the knowledge base and conceptual

frameworks to facilitate the delivery of service excellence. Building on concepts from
management and marketing, the subject explores the increasing contribution of
service industries to the global economy. The subject identifies the specific challenges
associated with services, to encourage new ways of thinking and establish fundamental
principles for service managers. In a world where manufacturing industries increasingly
compete on the basis of service elements in their package of consumer benefits, the
need for managers who can provide leadership in services management is
accentuated.

MANAGING INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (640) equips students with the basic knowledge
and skills necessary for a manager to function effectively in an international business
setting. The subject covers the analysis of national environments, market choice,
entry-mode choice, balancing demands for global integration and local
responsiveness, subsidiary management and management of expatriates. It
incorporates teaching from many different disciplines of research, such as economics,
management strategy, sociology and political science, to help students understand
how strategies for a firm competing in international markets are influenced.

MARKETING MANAGEMENT (630) provides the framework to understand and analyse

the market environment, consumers and competitors, in order to facilitate marketing
decision-making. The subject introduces the concepts, principles and activities
involved in the analysis, development, implementation and control of marketing
programmes. The objective is to prepare students to apply the knowledge and skills
gained from this subject towards the development of effective marketing plans to
spur business growth.

OBJECT-ORIENTED ANALYSIS AND DESIGN (2910) prepares students to participate

effectively in the analysis and design of information systems solutions using an object-
oriented approach. The object-oriented lifecycle and process models, such as the
Rational Unified Process (RUP), Unified Modelling Language (UML), object-oriented
analysis models, object-oriented design models and design patterns are considered.
The subject also explains software reuse and component architectures with reference
to industry standards, such as CORBA, J2EE and DCOM. The relationship between
object-oriented design models and their implementation in programme codes is also
described.
3-495_MMIT1-30 5/8/08 7:57 PM Page 21

ORGANISATIONAL BEHAVIOUR (601) provides the knowledge base for understanding

behaviour within organisations. The subject incorporates teachings from multiple
disciplines – ideas from political science, economics and information technology
are woven into this subject as well as concepts from behavioural sciences, such as
psychology, anthropology and sociology. This subject equips students with tools to
effectively manage individuals and groups within organisations and offers a better
understanding of organisational culture.

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT (2900) introduces modern software

engineering practices and provides students with a broad understanding of
contemporary software engineering management. It begins by establishing the
need for disciplined software production and identifies a set of generic development
activities that are common to all software projects. Software requirements, analysis
and design are covered, as are issues of quality management, software testing, test
strategies and test techniques. The subject takes a close look at software process
models which arrange those activities into software projects. Finally, the issue of
software process improvement is discussed.

SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT (2700) provides students with an understanding of

contemporary issues in supply chain management. Students learn about the role
of information technology as the enabler of supply chain functioning and explore
the roles of logistics, procurement and manufacturing in the supply chain. The subject
also discusses the operational strategies available and the different systems of
communication and information sharing in enterprise resource planning and
managing organisational relationships.

What is online education?

Online education at U21Global refers to the use of the Internet for the
delivery of subject materials, as well as the facilitation of interaction among
students and professors. Students access online classrooms, which provide
course content and a variety of communication features, including message
boards, threaded discussions and chat rooms. In short, online education
refers to a virtual campus where the full benefits of traditional on-campus
learning are accessible to students any time, anywhere they have access
to the Internet.

What are the advantages of online education?

Online education is student-centred, flexible and convenient. With the ease
of online delivery, the emphasis in the educational process shifts from
teaching to learning. Students do not have to follow a prescribed pattern
and there is more scope for personal growth according to your own preferred
style. In the online environment, everyone has an equal opportunity to
participate in class discussions.

How do online subjects work?

Each U21Global subject takes 12 weeks to complete, plus an additional
week for the final exam. A subject professor will guide students through the
subject content and exercises, which are completely online. The subjects
cover all aspects of traditional, classroom-based learning through the
creative use of a variety of communication methods. Students progress by
actively engaging in reading, reflecting and interactive problem-solving,
often in groups.

Who are the professors?

U21Global utilises a growing pool of excellent and dedicated professors.
Professors are carefully selected in terms of their academic qualifications,
depth of teaching experience, research publication record and consultancy
experience. All professors are required to successfully complete an extensive
training programme before being approved to lead a class. Our professors
are based all around the world, so students can take advantage of a faculty
that is truly international.

programme What is the length of the programme?

information This is dependent on the number of subjects you take at a time and whether
you choose to take extended pauses. Typically, the Master of Management
in Information Technology can be completed within two years. The
Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate programmes can be completed in
12 and 6 months respectively.

to beyond graduation. Our student support includes enrolment counselling,
a comprehensive, interactive online student orientation, a student handbook,
24/7 technical support, career counselling and alumni services.

Can I transfer my credits to another university?

U21Global is already recognised by many of the universities in Universitas 21,
as well as other universities with equal standing. Credit transfer to other
university programmes, however, is always dependent on the individual
university’s academic policies.

Who awards the qualification?

The qualification is awarded by U21Global. Stringent quality assurance
procedures are completed by U21pedagogica, the quality assurance body
established by the Universitas 21 universities. The degree certificate awarded
by U21Global bears the crests of the participating Universitas 21 universities.

Will employers recognise my qualification?

Employers already recognise the quality of the U21Global online programmes.
A number of corporations and government agencies, such as CNBC in
Singapore, Keppel Corporation, STARHUB, Singapore Chamber of Commerce
in Hong Kong, Jollibee in Philippines, Satyam Computer Services and the
