Problem:
Determine the resulting stress equations for σ𝑥, σ𝑦 and τ𝑥𝑦, given the Airy’s stress function

4 3 2 2 3 4
ϕ = 𝑎1. 𝑥 + 𝑎2. 𝑥 . 𝑦 + 𝑎3. 𝑥 . 𝑦 + 𝑎4. 𝑥. 𝑦 + 𝑎5. 𝑦

where the 𝑎𝑖 are constants. Also determine if any restrictions between the constants.

Solution:
Given,
4 3 2 2 3 4
ϕ = 𝑎1. 𝑥 + 𝑎2. 𝑥 . 𝑦 + 𝑎3. 𝑥 𝑦 + 𝑎4. 𝑥𝑦 + 𝑎5. 𝑦

∂ϕ 3 2 2 3
∴ ∂𝑥
= 4𝑎1. 𝑥 + 3𝑎2. 𝑥 . 𝑦 + 2𝑎3. 𝑥. 𝑦 + 𝑎4. 𝑦
2
∂ϕ 2 2
⇒ 2 = 12𝑎1. 𝑥 + 6𝑎2. 𝑥. 𝑦 + 2𝑎3. 𝑦
∂𝑥

3
∂ϕ
⇒ 3 = 24𝑎1. 𝑥 + 6𝑎2. 𝑦
∂𝑥

4
∂ϕ
⇒ 4 = 24𝑎1
∂𝑥

Similarly,
∂ϕ 3 2 2 3
∂𝑦
= 𝑎2. 𝑥 + 2𝑎3. 𝑥 . 𝑦 + 3𝑎4. 𝑥. 𝑦 + 4𝑎5. 𝑦
2
∂ϕ 2 2
⇒ 2 = 2𝑎3. 𝑥 + 6𝑎4. 𝑥. 𝑦 + 12𝑎5. 𝑦
∂𝑦

3
∂ϕ
⇒ 3 = 6𝑎4. 𝑥 + 24𝑎5. 𝑦
∂𝑦

4
∂ϕ
⇒ 4 = 24𝑎5
∂𝑦

Now,

Problem:

4 2 3 5 4
Show that ϕ = 𝑥 . 𝑥 + 4𝑥 . 𝑥 − 𝑥 is valid Airy stress function, that is, that ∇ ϕ = 0,
1 2 1 2 2

and compute the stress tensor for this case assuming a state of plane strain with ν = 0. 25

Solution:

The airy stress function must satisfy the bi-harmonic equation

4
∇ ϕ = ϕ,1111+ ϕ,2222 + 2ϕ,1212 = 0

Now,

ϕ,1111 = 24𝑥2

ϕ,2222 = − 120𝑥2

ϕ,1212 = 48𝑥2

And

4
∇ ϕ = 24𝑥2 +− 120𝑥2 + 48𝑥2 = 0

The stresses are

2 3
σ11 = ϕ,22 = 24𝑥1. 𝑥2 − 20𝑥2

2 3
σ22 = ϕ,11 = 12𝑥1. 𝑥2 + 8𝑥2

3 2
σ12 = − ϕ,12 =− 4𝑥1. 𝑥2 − 24𝑥1𝑥2
