QUESTION ONE (30 MARKS)

b) The International System of units, which is also known as


S.I. in every language is based on the measurement of seven
physical quantities. Name any SIX physical quantities and
their units of measurement. [6 marks]

c) Using diagrams, describe TWO types of transformers. [5 marks]


d) Differentiate between potential difference and Electro-motive
force (E.M.F) of a power source. [4 marks]
e) i) Distinguish between analogue and digital meters [2 marks]
ii) State THREE applications of operational amplifier [3 marks]
f) Differentiate between extrinsic and intrinsic semi-conductors
and give examples of each. [5 marks]

a) Using the British Standards BS 3939, draw the graphical
symbols for each of the following electronic components
and describe the roles they play in electronic appliances: [6 marks]

i) Resistors
ii) Variable capacitors
iii) Inductors

b) A resistor is colour coded RE, Yellow, Red and Gold.


Evaluate the resistance value of the resistor. [3 marks]

c) Calculate the total resistance for the circuit in diagram 1


given R1 = 6.8 K π, R2 = 26.4 K π, R3 = 5 K π, R4 = 2.4 K π,
R5 = 14 K π, R6 = R7 = 20 K π . [6 marks]

d) What is the percentage efficiency of an electric heater that


can produce 5000 joules of heat energy from a 7000 joules
electrical supply? [4 marks]

b) Name THREE factors that affect the capacitance of a capacitor. [3 marks]

c) Describe TWO types of operational amplifiers commonly used


in electronic circuits. [4 marks]

d) The following is a capacitive circuit diagram. Calculate the


capacitance between points A and B, if C1 = C2 = C4 = 22 uF,
C3 = C5 = 11 uF, C6 = 33uF.
