COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course is structured to help students sharpen their writing and reading skills and
improve their understanding of mechanics of writing. The focus is on helping the
students to be able to write clearly and improve their understanding of what they read by
teaching them to master basic writing tools like the outline, paragraph essay, summary,
and comprehension.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
At the end of the course, students should be able to

1. Improve understanding of mechanics of writing


2. Write good paragraphs and essays
3. Write outlines
4. Write summaries
5. Improve comprehension skills

COURSE OUTLINE
Mechanics of Writing (weeks 1 & 2)
 Subject-verb agreement
 Punctuation
 Sequence of tenses
 Ambiguity
 Coordination and subordination
The Paragraph (weeks 3 & 4)
 elements of the paragraph
 expressing the topic sentence
 expressing sentences of development
 expressing the concluding sentence
 developing unity
 developing coherence

The ESSAY (weeks 5 &6)


 Writing the introduction and expressing the thesis statement
 Developing the body
 Writing the conclusion
The outline and summary (weeks 7,8&9)
 Labelling divisions
 Using parallel ideas
 Using same grammatical form
 Indenting subdivisions
 Writing the summary
Comprehension (weeks 10 & 11)
 What is comprehension
 What is the purpose of comprehension
 How to improve reading comprehension
 How to answer comprehension questions

EXPECTATIONS
Students are expected to attend lectures regularly and should not be more than 15 minutes
late to class. If for any reason a student will be absent from class, he/she should seek
permission, or thereafter, provide documentary evidence to justify why he/she was not in
class.
