Chapter 3

Holy Spirit

Genesis 1:2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the
deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

2 Peter 1:20, 21 knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private
interpretation, 21for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke
as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.
Without the Holy Spirit, we would not have the Holy Bible. It was the Holy Spirit that
was with the prophets of old and with the New Testament writers and with us since Jesus
died for us. In the Old Testament people did not get close to God, only the one’s He
chose to get close. In the New Testament people are invited to get closer to God because
Jesus died and sent us the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit came upon the Virgin Mary. The Holy Spirit was with John the Baptist,
so he could tell of Jesus’ coming. The Holy Spirit was with Jesus. After Jesus died and
ascended to heaven the disciples waited and the Holy Spirit came upon them, so they
could tell about Jesus.
Luke 1:35 And the angel answered and said to her (virgin Mary), “The Holy Spirit will
come upon you, and the power of the Highest will over shadow you; therefore, also that
Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Proverbs 9:10 The fear (reverence) of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the
knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Angel of the Lord speaking of John the Baptist to his father Zacharias
Luke 1:15 “For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor
strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb.
John the Baptist was born 6 months before Jesus. Luke 1:41 And it happened, when
Elizabeth (pregnant with John the Baptist) heard the greeting of Mary, that the babe
leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.
John the Baptist grew up and told of Jesus’ coming. Luke 3:16 John answered, saying to
all, “I indeed baptize you with water, but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal
strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.”

Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist…

Matthew 3:15 (Jesus speaking to John the Baptist) But Jesus answered and said to him,
“Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.” Then he
allowed Him.
Matthew 3:16, 17 When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the
water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God
descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. 17And suddenly a voice came from
heaven, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

24
John 20:21, 22 So Jesus said to them again, (the disciples were hiding in fear of the Jews
after Jesus had been crucified) “Peace to you! As the Father has sent Me, I also send
you.” 22And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them,” Receive the
Holy Spirit.”

God gives you free will and if you choose to love God then He expects you to give your
will back to Him. You receive the Holy Spirit after you know Jesus and you give your
will to the Holy Spirit. That gives you the power to witness about everything that Jesus
does for you and tell of His commands.
John 20:29a “ Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.”
Acts 1:8 “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you
shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of
the earth.”
Acts 2:2-4 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind,
and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3Then there appeared to them
divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with
the Holy Spirit …

Luke 24:46- 49 Then He said to them, “Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for
the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day. 47and that repentance and
remission of sins should be preached in His name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.
48And you are witnesses of these things. 49Behold, I send the Promise of My Father upon
you;

Matthew 10:19, 20 “But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you
should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20for it is
not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.”
The Spirit speaking for you just comes from the Spirit. Some people don’t realize that
the Spirit is speaking through them. Just relax and believe. Try a syllable at a time.

Matthew 12:31 “Therefore I say to you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men,
but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven men.”

Mark 3:28, 29 “Assuredly, I say to you, all sins will be forgiven the sons of men, and
whatever blasphemies they may utter; 29but he who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit
never has forgiveness, but is subject to eternal condemnation”

Luke 12: 8-10 “Also I say to you, whoever confesses Me before men, him the Son of Man
also will confess before the angels of God. 9But he who denies Me before men will be
denied before the angels of God. 10And anyone who speaks a word against the Son of
Man, it will be forgiven him; but to him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit, it will
not be forgiven.”

Isaiah 12:3 Therefore with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.

25
In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians 4:30-32 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by
whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31Let all bitterness, wrath, anger,
clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. 32And be kind to one
another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.
Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall
be filled.”
Mark 9:49, 50 “For everyone will be seasoned with fire, and every sacrifice will be
seasoned with salt. 50Salt is good, but if the salt loses its flavor, how will you season it?
Have salt in yourselves, and have peace with one another?
Sacrifices give you good salt within yourself. Sacrifice to God by being good to His
people. If you want to be one with the Holy Spirit then you keep the peace with others.
Do not fight God’s people, let God fight for you then you keep the peace inside of you
and you don’t worry.
Exodus 14:14 The LORD shall fight for you, and you shall hold your peace.
John 14:27 “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I
give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”

James 2:26 For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
When you believe and act on that belief then that is faith.

Mark 13:11 “But when they arrest you and deliver you up, do not worry beforehand, or
premeditate what you will speak. But whatever is given you in that hour, speak that; for it
it’s not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit.”

Luke 12:11, 12 “Now when they bring you to the synagogues and magistrates and
authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say.
12For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

Luke 21: 12c- 15 You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. 13But
it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. 14Therefore settle it in your hearts
not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; 15for I will give you a mouth and
wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist.”

John 3:5-8 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water
and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. 6That which is born of the flesh is
flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. 7Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You
must be born again,’ 8The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but
cannot tell where it comes from and where it goes. So is everyone who is born of the
Spirit.” Born again – born of the Spirit. Born of water is your natural birth. Born of the
Spirit is a spiritual birth within you. You need to know Jesus to understand spiritual
things or spiritual birth or the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the King of the kingdom of God. To
enter the kingdom of God is to know about Jesus. And if you want to witness effectively,
you need the Holy Spirit. Don’t forget you have to give your will to the Holy Spirit.

John 14:16, 17 “And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He
may abide with you forever- 17the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because

26
it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will
be in you.”

John 14:26 “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He
will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.”

John 16:12, 13 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.
13However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for
He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He
will tell you things to come.”

Ephesians 5:17-21 Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord
is. 18And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,
19speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making
melody in your heart to the Lord, 20giving thanks always for all things to God the Father
in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, 21submitting to one another in the fear of God.

John 7:39 But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would
receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Jesus is glorified and the Holy Spirit has been given. That was then and this is now. You
are in the now. Do you believe in Jesus? Do you want to be closer to Him and be a
disciple of His and tell of Him? Are you willing to give your will to the Holy Spirit?
John 6:37, 38 “All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to
Me I will by no means cast out. 38For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own
will, but the will of Him who sent Me.”

1 Peter 1:12-16 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were
ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have
preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven – things which angels
desire to look into. 13Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your
hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
14as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your
ignorance; 15but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
16because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” The Holy Spirit is poured out on the
church, receive Him. Obedience brings blessings.

John 16:7 “Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if
I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

Acts 1:5 “for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy
Spirit not many days from now.”

Acts 1:7, 8 And He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or seasons which the
Father has put in His own authority. 8But you shall receive power when the Holy Sprit
has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and
Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”

27
Revelation 2:7 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To
him who overcomes I will give to eat from the tree of life, which is in the midst of the
Paradise of God.”
We are in the church age; the Spirit speaks to the churches. “He who has an ear, let him
hear” simply means that when you read or hear scripture, you can understand it. To
overcome is to realize that Jesus already overcame evil by speaking what is written and
we can overcome evil by just saying ‘Jesus’ out loud or quoting scripture. The tree of life
is the eternal life you get from believing that God sent Jesus. Paradise of God is heaven
that will be brought down to earth some day.

Revelation 2:10, 11 “Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer.
Indeed, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and
you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown
of life. 11He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. He who
overcomes shall not be hurt by the second death.”
If you are born again, then the old you has died. The second death to those who are born
again is the death that everybody fears if they don’t know Jesus. Christians don’t fear
death because they know they are going to a better place.

Revelation 2:16, 17 “Repent, or else I will come to you quickly and will fight against
them with the sword of My mouth. 17He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says
to the churches. To him who overcomes I will give some of the hidden manna to eat. And
I will give him a white stone, and on the stone a new name written which no one knows
except him who receives it.” Overcomes is not believing the lies that the evil one will put
in your head. Even though you have the Holy Spirit who reminds you and guides you,
you will be experiencing attacks from the evil in this world. You have the power of Jesus
to rebuke evil. Speak it out loud in Jesus name and evil always runs. Evil comes back,
but Jesus already won. You can laugh at evil, the only reason he comes back is because
he is afraid of what God has in store for you. Overcome, keep overcoming.

Revelation 2:29 “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

\Revelation 3:5, 6 “He who overcomes shall be clothed in white garments, and I will not
blot out his name from the Book of Life; but I will confess his name before My Father and
before His angels. 6He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the
churches.” Book of Life is the book that has Jesus’ people’s names in it and they will
receive eternal life.

Revelation 3:11-13 “Behold I am coming quickly! Hold fast what you have, that no one
may take your crown. 12He who overcomes, I will make him a pillar in the temple of My
God, and he shall go out no more. I will write on him the name of My God and the name
of the city of My God, the New Jerusalem, which comes down out of heaven from My
God. And I will write on him My new name. 13He who has an ear, let him hear what the
Spirit says to the churches.”

28
Revelation 3:18-22 “I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may
be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness
may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. 19As many as
I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent. 20Behold I stand at the
door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and
dine with him, and he with Me. 21To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My
throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22He who has an
ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Jesus says buy from Him gold refined in the fire. This means gold is His people and
refined in the fire is when you have been filled with the Holy Spirit. That you may be
rich – God refers to His people as riches. White garments – you represent God as His
disciple. The shame of your nakedness – after you become a disciple the babe is always
in you, but don’t revert back to that. Anoint your eyes with eye salve means to see
scripture and understand it. You can pray for people to be anointed with eye salve from
Jesus to help them to be saved.

Revelation 16:15 “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches, and keeps
his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.”

Acts 10:42-44 And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He
who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead. 43”To Him all the
prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission
of sin.” 44While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those
who heard the word.
