YOUTUBE 1.  Say, today, I want to teach you that  master authors don't just
tell any stories.  They tell meaningful stories.  Pay attention to the
kinds of stories they choose to tell us....because this can help
inspire us to tell our own meaningful--small-moment stories.

2.  Introduce and explain the concept of small moment stories.

3.  Introduce my writer's notebook where I keep and maintain my


small moment ideas.

4. Introduce the two texts: Owl Moon and The Leaving Morning, as
well as the authors. Explain that as we read and listen to the
stories, we are going to try and imagine what small moments in

Active Engagement

1.  Introduce my notepad seed idea book to the students.  then ask
them to think of a Small Moment story idea and tell that topic to
the person sitting next to them.  Suggest that they try to name
why this moment matters.

2.  Say:  right now, think of a small moment that's happened in PDF document
your life--one that stands out from all everyday moments--and PADLET DRIVE
tell that idea to your partner.  See if you can also say why that
moment matters.  When it is your turn to listen, be the kind of
listener who cares.  Ask for more information if you don't yet

3.  Ask the writers to get started by telling the beginning of the
story to their partners.

Conferring and Small Group Work

1.  As students work to fill in their watermelon to see graphic


organizers, conference with each, 1 to 1, to help them turn a
watermelon idea into a slice, and then into a seed.

2. Allow 15--20 minutes; then, have volunteers share out.

Share Out

1.  Have volunteers share their small moments.

2.  In particular, have students share how they refined their small
moment from watermelon, to slice, to seed.

3. If any particular student is still having a problem narrowing their


seed idea, help them, by modeling--taking their watermelon level
idea down to seed.
