Throughout the play, Othello is initially portrayed as a valiant and composed man who is admired by those around him and sincerely loves his wife Desdemona. However, Iago manipulates Othello's trust and love into a destructive jealousy, causing Othello's kind personality to become broken and corrupted, as seen when he slaps Desdemona, changing people's perceptions of him and revealing his true jealous and gullible nature underneath his initial calm exterior.

Throughout the start of 'Othello', we see the main character Othello is admired by
those around him. He is described as 'Valiant' by the duke in Act 1 Scene 3.
Othello is also perceived in general as very calm and composed. We also know he sincerely values honesty and his love for his wife, Desdemona. While this would make you think that Othello is forever going to remain calm and composed, you would be more than wrong. Iago utilises these qualities that Othello possesses to twist his love for his wife, Desdemona, into a powerful and destructive jealousy. Iago causes Othello's kind personality to become broken and corrupted which drastically changes everyone's perception of Othello. In Act 4 Scene 1 we see Othello slap Desdemona which is a very apparent sign of just how rattled Othello can get which in my opinion ruins his reputation and displays his true colours. Therefore I believe Othello at heart is quite a jealous and gullible person, not calm and composed.
