Exam Notification 2021

Year 8 Mathematics
Assessment Task 2
Wednesday 2nd June, Week 7, Term 2

This examination is a formal assessment task that has a weighting of 30% towards the total assessment for this
subject area. The following notification indicates the format of the examination and the areas of study/units of
work to focus on during students’ study and preparation time leading up to the examination period.
MA4-1WM  communicates and connects mathematical ideas using appropriate terminology, diagrams and
symbols

MA4-2WM  applies appropriate mathematical techniques to solve problems

MA4-3WM  recognises and explains mathematical relationships using reasoning

MA4-5NA  operates with fractions, decimals and percentages

MA4-6NA  solves financial problems involving purchasing goods

MA4-8NA  generalises number properties to operate with algebraic expressions

MA4-10NA  uses algebraic techniques to solve simple linear and quadratic equations

All Students are expected to bring:

Rubber & Ruler Calculator
(in a clear plastic sleeve)

Newman Task:
Year 8 Newman (8N) Mathematics students will be required to attempt a Newman component (20 mins)
directly after the Year 8 Task 2. Any students outside 8N who would like to complete the Newman section
must notify their teacher as soon as possible.
Student on Leave 
In the event that students and/or parents have prior knowledge of a student’s inability to attend due to family commitments or travel they
must request leave via a letter addressed to the Principal (forms are available from the front office) explaining the nature of the leave.
Students must speak with the KLA Coordinator regarding these matters after the task notification has been issued.

In the event of a missed assessment task:


Students in Year 7 – 9 should present the parent note to the Assistant Mathematics Coordinator the morning they return to school.
Students in Years 10 – 12 should present a Doctor’s Certificate to the Leader of Teaching & Learning the day after the medical certificate
is dated for, even if the student does not have an exam. Failure to do this may result in lateness penalties applying or a ZERO mark
awarded. All tasks must be completed even if a ZERO award has been issued.
 
All assessment tasks and Examination blocks are advertised in the Assessment Handbook well in advance each year.

Percentages
● Find percentages of quantities and express one quantity as a percentage of another
● Solve problems involving the use of percentages, including percentage increases and decreases

Financial Mathematics
● Investigate and calculate the Goods and Services Tax (GST)
● Investigate and calculate 'best buys'
● Solve problems involving profit and loss

Algebraic techniques
● Extend and apply the distributive law to the expansion of algebraic expressions
● Factorise algebraic expressions by identifying numerical factors

Equations
● Solve simple linear equations
● Solve simple quadratic equations
