All questions are compulsory
This question paper is divided in four sections A,B,C,D as follows
SECTION A
Question number 1 is of 14 marks. All parts of this question are compulsory.
SECTION B
Question numbers 2 to 8 carry 2 marks each with one internal choice.
SECTION C
Question numbers 9 to 1 7carry 3 marks each with 2 questions having internal choice.
SECTION D
Question numbers 18 to 20 are long answer type questions and carry 5 marks each .
Simple scientific calculator without a programmable memory may be used for calculations.

SECTION A-14 MARKS


Question 1

(A)In the question (i) to (vii) below, choose the correct alternative (a),(b) ,(c) or (d) for
each of the questions given below: [7x1=7]

(i) For a body centred cubic lattice of side ‘a’ if the charge at the centre of the cube is q then
the electric flux through each surface of the cube is:

(ii) For a monochromatic ray that passes through an isosceles triangle with minimum

B.Answer the following questions briefly.

(i) What will be the net electric force acting on an electric dipole placed in a uniform
electric field?

(ii) State Kirchhoff’s second law as a mathematical equation.

(iii) Give any one reason why efficiency of a transformer is always less than 1.

(iv)What do you mean by pair annihilation?

(v) If the speed of light were half of its present value, what effect would it have on the
binding energy of the nucleus?
(vi) State the path difference between two waves reaching a point for

a) constructive interference. b) destructive interference.

(vii) What is meant by energy gap in solids?

SECTION B – 14 MARKS

Question 2 [2]

Two very long conductors PQ and RS are kept parallel to each other in vacuum at a
distance of 20 cm. They carry currents of 5 A and 15 A respectively ,in the same
direction. Find the resultant magnetic field density at a point M which lies exactly midway
between PQ and RS.
OR
A parallel-plate 100 µF capacitor is charged to 500V and the charging battery is removed. If
the distance between its plates is halved, then what will be the new potential difference
between the plates and what will be the change in the stored energy?

Define current density. Write an expression which connects current density with drift speed.

When we switch on the lights one after the other, what is the effect on the resistance of the
electric circuit of the house and on the current flowing in the main line?

Question 5 [2]

A 200 turn coil of self-inductance 20 mH carries a current of 4 mA. Find the magnetic flux
linked with the coil.

OR

A rectangular loop of area 5 m2 , has 50 turns and carries a current of 1A. It is held in a
uniform magnetic field of 0.1T, at an angle of 300 . Calculate the torque experienced by the
coil.

Draw a neat and labelled ray diagram to show the formation of a primary and secondary
rainbow.

SECTION C – 27 MARKS

Question 9 [3]

With the help of a labelled diagram, obtain an expression for the electric field intensity E at
any point P on the equatorial line (broad side on position) of an electric dipole.

Question 10 [3]

In a metre bridge circuit, a resistance in the left-hand gap is 2Ω and an unknown resistance
X is in the right-hand gap as shown in Fig.1.The null point is found at 40cm from the left end
of the wire. What resistance should be connected to X so that the new null point is 50cm
from the left end of the wire?

Obtain an expression for the magnetic flux density 𝑩 at the centre of a circular coil of radius
R having N turns when a current I flows through it.

Question 12 [3]

(i) Define critical angle for an interface of two media.


(ii) A ray of light incident in air on the surface of a glass block is deviated through 150.
The angle of incidence in air is 600 . What is the angle of refraction in glass? Also,
calculate the critical angle for glass air interface.

Question 13 [3]

(i) When two thin lenses of focal lengths f1 and f2 are kept in contact, prove that their
combined focal length ‘f’ is given by 𝟏/ 𝒇1 + 𝟏 /𝒇2 = 𝟏 /𝒇

(ii) (a) A monochromatic ray of light falls on a regular prism under minimum deviation
condition. What is the relation between angle of incidence and angle of emergence?
(b) A ray of light incident on an equilateral glass prism shows minimum deviation of
300 . Calculate the speed of light through the glass prism.

Draw a labelled graph showing the variation in intensity of light with distance in a single slit
Fraunhofer diffraction experiment.

Question 15 [3]

(i)Calculate the momentum of a photon of energy 6x10-19 J.


(ii) In photoelectric effect, what is meant by the term
(a) work function? (b) stopping potential?

Question 16 [3]

Energy levels of H atom are given by: En = - 𝟏𝟑.𝟔 /𝒏2 eV, where n is principal quantum
number. Calculate the wavelength of electromagnetic radiation emitted by hydrogen atom
resulting from the transition n=2 to n=1.

OR

In a hydrogen atom, a transition takes place from n=3 to n=2.


(a) Calculate the wavelength of the emitted photon.
(b) Will the photon be visible?
(c) To which spectral series will this photon belong?

Question 18 [5]

i) (a) A 50 µF capacitor, a 30 Ω resistor and a 0.7 H inductor are connected in series to an


AC supply which generates a voltage ‘V’ given by V = 300 sin200t V. Calculate peak value of
the current flowing through the circuit. that Irms = 𝑰𝟎 √𝟐

(b) Show , where Irms is the root mean square value of the alternating current and I0 is its
peak value.

OR

(ii) (a) What is motional emf? State any two factors on which it depends.

(b) With the help of a neatly drawn labelled diagram, prove that the magnitude of motional
emf ‘e’ is given by e = Blv, where l is the length of a metallic rod and ‘v’ is the velocity’ with
which it is pulled in a transverse magnetic field ‘B’.

(b) In a nuclear reactor, state one function of:

(ii) (a) (1) Write a balanced equation showing nuclear fission of Uranium nucleus 𝟗𝟐U 235 .
(2) What is nuclear fusion? Give one representative equation.

(b) In a certain star, three alpha particles undergo fusion in a single reaction to form a

6𝐶 nucleus. Calculate the energy released in this reaction in MeV. Given: m (𝟐He4 )
=4⋅002604 u and m ( 𝟔C12) =12⋅000000 u.
