STATISTICS AND PROBABILITY – Performance Task 1

Submit a pdf file of your output here in Moodle with the file name “Section-Lastname-
Performance task 1” based on the entries below (show your complete solutions and graphical
representations, if needed). Once proven that your submission is just copy-pasted from the internet
or copied from your classmate, a grade of zero (0) will be given.

Deadline: October 25, 2021 (5pm)

I. Cover page (copy the cover page found on the last page).
II. Table of Contents
III. Look Back and Reflect
A. Why should the sum of the probabilities in a probability distribution always equal to 1?
B. What does the variance and standard deviation of a probability distribution tell
us? How do you interpret the variance and standard deviation of a probability
distribution?
C. In the previous lessons, you have learned about random variables, their means
and standard deviations, and their probability distributions. So, why would a large
sample set of data be favorable for making decisions?

IV. Experiment (your answer here will depend on the data from your experiments).
A. Toss 5 coins for 30 times and observe the number of heads that occur. The
possible values of X or the number of heads in 5-coin tosses are 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Keep track or tally the number of times each outcome is observed in the
frequency of occurrence and solve for the relative frequency to complete the
following table:

Relative Frequency Actual

Number of Frequency
(Frequency of Occurrence ÷ Total Probability
Heads of
Number of Times the Coins Were P(X)
X Occurrence
Tossed)
[Approximate Probability]
0 0.031

1 0.156

2 0.313

3 0.313

4 0.156

5 0.031
Compare the approximate probability values and the actual probability values. How
would you make the approximate probability values very close to the actual
probability values?

B. Create your own experiment (coin toss, rolling a die, picking a ball/card, etc.) and list
all possible outcomes. Set your own random variable to create a probability
distribution and solve for its mean, standard deviation and variance. Show your
solutions and histogram.

C. Documentation --(Add documentation/pictures while conducting the experiments.

Make sure to put caption for each photo taken.)

V. Rubrics:

Mathematical Correct answers, solutions, and data presented

solutions to the given problems/experiment. 50 points

Organization of outputs, solutions, and 25 points

Content explanation to the given problem/experiment.
Being creative with the experiment made and
how well you present your data/answers. This 20 points
Creativity do not refer to the designs, background, or
other irrelevant pictures you put in your
output.
Able to submit earlier or on/before the 5 points
Promptness deadline in Moodle.
