 World Day against Trafficking in Persons is
held on July 30th each year, and is an annual
Introduction event. People trafficking and modern day
slavery is a massive worldwide problem with
very few countries immune to human
trafficking, and the event by the United Nations
is to raise awareness and increase prevention
of that.
Traffickers use different strategies during the recruitment
process, but deception is generally involved. Fake job
advertisements, false promises of economic opportunity
and a better life are typical lies that traffickers will use to

deceive people that a bright, happy future is waiting for
them. Also, the ‘lover boy’ method of recruitment is often
used to
used, with promises of true love and a romantic
adventure. Sadly, this adventure is likely to be violent

exploitation with traumatic consequences. But the
traffickers will make a profit from the sale of their victims,

and that is their main goal. Despite what films show,
traffickers do not usually abduct victims.

Female victims continue to be the primary targets:
women make up 46% and girls 19% of all victims of
trafficking. As recently estimated by Contre la Traite
des Êtres Humains, a collective created by our
COATnet member Secours Catholique in 2007: about
62% of prostitution goes through the Internet to
connect the victims, or their procurers, with clients. The
peculiarity of this form of trafficking is that the
exploitation phase is visible on the Internet. The
common man can access prostitution offer ads from his
personal computer in a few clicks. Trivializing this
crime, internet became a fast and accessible way to
buy and sell human bodies.
Technology itself is a tool, its negative or positive
effect on the life of each human being is related to
the use that people made of it. In this regard, it is
essential to implement prevention and awareness-
raising activities on the safe use of the internet and
social media with the aim of mitigating the risk of
people falling victim of trafficking online. This is why
COATnet is here today: since no country is immune
to this crime, educating the public raises awareness
and fosters a sense of responsibility is fundamental.
We can all do our part as concerned citizens in
preventing and countering human trafficking.

equality in employment opportunities.
Developing programs that offer livelihood options and
include basic education, literacy, communication and
other skills and reduce barriers to entrepreneurship.
Encouraging gender sensitization and education on equal
and respectful relationships between the sexes, thus
preventing violence against women.
Ensuring that policies are in place that allow women
equal access to and control over economic and financial
resources.
By the help of NGOs and Police officials there can be some
types of advertisements through the popular media in
particular location and by conducting some awareness
programs in villages, local schools, among kids of the poor
society and public to be alert of being victimized.
