Tips and advice on troubleshooting error codes.

The jumble of error codes. An overview.

Note: if you hang a VAG car on a scanner, you never know which of the version error codes below will appear.
Version 1: the VAG codes 00000 to 04120.
The VAG group started introducing error codes in the early nineties. They assigned each error code a number, a 5-digit number, starting
at 00000 and ending at 04120 (?). There could be different things going on for each error code. Common ones are (see below under
'Additional Information - Extra code at end of error messages'): 'fault in circuit', 'unlikely signal', 'signal too low', 'signal too high',
'signal intermittent'.
Please note these error codes only apply to VAG cars.
Version 1a is the decimal representation, i.e. 00000 to 04120.
Version 1b is the hexadecimal representation, i.e. 0 to 1018.

Version 2: the VAG codes 16343 to 65535.

In the course of the nineties, the VAG group, most likely influenced by the SAE, which was developing an industry standard for OBD
codes, split the error codes 00000 to 04120. Eg. "00524 (Knock Sensor 1) - fault in circuit" became 16494; "00524 (Knock Sensor 1) -
unlikely signal" became 16495; "00524 (Knock sensor 1) - signal too weak" became 16496; "00524 (Knock sensor 1) - signal too
strong" became 16497. That became the error codes 16343 to 65535. And these error codes correspond, 1-to-1, to the EODB error
codes.
Please note these error codes only apply to VAG cars.
Version 2a is the decimal representation, so 16343 through 65535.
Version 2b is the hexadecimal representation, so 3FD8 through FFFF.

Version 3: The OBD Error Codes P/B/C/N 0xxx 1xxx 2xxx 3xxx
The SAE's (E)OBD-II fault codes, which were introduced sometime in the 1990s. Those EOBD numbers start with one letter (P, C, B
or U), followed by one (1) number, followed by three (3) hexadecimal numbers. These errors are ordered by type of error.
Note : there are 'Generic' error codes (which every manufacturer must adhere to) and 'Manufacturer Specific' error codes (specific per
car make).
Version 3a is the hexadecimal representation, so hexadecimal P0001 through P3FFF, B0001 through B3FFF, C0001 through C3FFF,
U0001 through U3FFF.
Version 3b is the decimal representation, so 0 to 4095.

Version 1 error codes have 'additional information' - Extra code at end of error messages:

Version 3: The OBD error codes

The OBD error code covers five positions:
pos.1: a letter (B, C, P or U)
pos.2: a number (anno 2015 0, 1, 2 or 3)
pos.3, 4 and 5: numbers in the hexadecimal system
and is ordered by the type of error.
There are two categories:
Generic : every car manufacturer must adhere to the definitions of these error codes
Manufacturer specific : each car manufacturer can decide for itself what meaning it gives to this error code

ISO/SAE
The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) is the official body that determines which meaning is assigned to which error code.
The definitions (format) for those error codes are laid down in ISO standards. In the Netherlands, those ISO standards are managed by the
NEN (Dutch Standardization Institute) .
The SAE has defined the definitions (format) of those error codes in its standard J2012 . Known at ISO and NEN as ISO 15031-6:2010
(version 6 from the year 2010) .
The specific description of the error codes (which error code means what) is in J2012DA .

This list of error codes is not 100% complete.

These error codes are part of the diagnosis system of the VAG concern. The VAG group has developed these codes exclusively for internal
use and does not make them available for 'public' use.
The American Uwe Ross has 'tried' a large part of those error codes, uses them in his VAG-COM program and he also does not make those
error codes publicly available.
The error codes on this website have been 'grabbed' together from dozens of internet sources and this list is therefore not complete.
