Theory :

Microstrip lines are a type of transmission line commonly used in RF and microwave circuits
due to their quasi-TEM mode of propagation and flexibility. Microstrip lines' primary functions
are transferring power from one point to another, dividing or combining power signals, and
generating phase shifts. The size of the microstrip section is related to the guide wavelength, and
depending on the length, transmission lines are classified into quarter-wave microstrip lines and
half-wave microstrip lines.
A quarter-wave impedance transformer, often written as λ/4 impedance transformer,
is a transmission line or waveguide used in electrical engineering of length one- quarter
wavelength (λ), terminated with some known impedance. It presents at its input the dual of the
impedance with which it is terminated. Figure 1.1 is clearly illustrated the impedance matching
using quarter-wave transmission line.

Figure 1.1
Match the radiating resistance (136 H) of a Patch Antenna to the 50 H – feeder at the GPS –
frequency of 1575 MHz using a Quarter-wave Transmission Line on a FR4-Board. FR4-board-
properties :
Thickness = 60 MIL = 0.06 inch = 1.52 mm er
= 4.4
loss tangent = 0.02
copper cladding = 0.675 mil = 17 mm = 0.5 oz copper (up and down)

Procedure :

1. Start a new project

a. click on “Project” and choose

“Insert Circuit Design”.

b. Select :

MS – FR4 (ER =4.4)

0.06 inch,
0.5 oz copper

c. click “Open”

2. Circuit editor and simulation tool.

a. Please open all the folder in

the project management.
Make sure have “RF4”
2. Using interface port

a. click on “Draw” and choose

“Interface Port”.

b. Select :

Symbol “Microwave Port”

c. click “OK” and the device show

as below; The value is RZ = 50
Ohm and IZ = 0 ohm

3. Complete the circuit.

a. click on folder “LUMP”.

b. Select : Simple resistor and

rotate the part (if necessary).

c. drag and drop the

component.
a. change the value of resistor to
136 ohm by “right click” at the
resistor.

b. Then click “OK”.

a. click on folder “MICROSTRIP”.

b. Select : “TRANSMISSION
LINE” and choose

c. drag and drop the component.

a. Open the Property Menu with a

double click on the Microstrip
symbol.

b. The setting for microstrip is P

= 27.063mm
W = 1.07229mm
SUB = FR4
TRL = TRL
INFO = MSTRL

c. After setting, the result as

shown as the figure.

d. Lastly, use the wire and ground

to complete the circuit.
4. If you wish to read a short description of this line type, double click on the microstrip
symbol and used “INFO / MSTRL” . Click TRL to open the microstrip calculator.
5. Analyze and create report.

a. Click “CIRCUIT” and

“ANALYZE”

b. The setting for microstrip is

Analysis Name : NWA1
Analysis type : Linear Network
Analysis
Category : Frequency Domain

c. Click “NEXT”

a. Set linear step :

Start = 0GHz
Stop = 5GHz
Step = 0.05GHz

b. “ADD”, “OK” and “FINISH”

a. Click “ CIRCUIT” and

“CREATE REPORT”

b. “ADD”, “OK” and “FINISH”

Make sure the setting as below : mark

“S-Parameters” in the list choose

“S11”

function – dB

press “Add Trace” and

press “Done”

5. Observe the output, get the result and record in the table 1.1.

6. Create the Smith Chart Report
