its content to answer the questions listed after the text.

[Less than] A Day in the New Normal

Written by: Czarlaine Valderrama

When was the last time that you left your home for work? Or the last time
you went out to catch up with your friends? Do you still remember the last time you
played in the rain with your neighbors? Or went to the mall with your family for an
abundant dinner after church? Have you ever thought that these little things could
become something huge and unsafe to do? Well if you are to ask me, my answer
would have been no, until I left the house on the 5 th day of June, 2020 and little
thoughts sink in me.

6
I realized a few things when I head out for the first time after more than two
months of staying safe at home, and here it goes…

1. Transportation is hardly an option.

I left home only to buy a badly needed

medicine. Though the market is not that far from
our home, I usually ride a tricycle to go there
fast. But this time, I chose to walk. I walked not
because I did not feel safe riding one, but
because in the first place, the hardworking
tricycle drivers were not there to bring us to
places. I have known these people since high
school. Rain or shine, they always stay in their
lane or toda until 7 o’clock in the evening. They
do that not only to earn money for their families,
but also to help plenty of commuters like me. It
is just sad that the pandemic happens, leading
so many people like them to take sacrifices.
Then, I suddenly felt grateful amidst my
sadness, and later, I will tell you why.

2. The sun is verily bright, but the world feels odd.

I have walked the same path before, but it

never felt this strange. The sari-sari stores were
closed, the people who I usually encounter were
not there at all, it was early in the morning and
yet there were no vendors selling products in the
street, the noise of the neighborhood and
highways was no longer the same, and mostly,
the walk to the drugstore seemed longer
compared before. The sun was positively bright
and yet, only few people were there to witness
it. It felt really different, somehow it frightened
me, so I hurriedly walk to get to the drugstore
quickly.

7
3. I have never felt so “distant.”

People these days are

unidentifiable. We are asked to do
precautions that I have only seen in
the movies before. We are asked to
wear facial masks, to follow social
distance, and to walk in a part of the
road in the same direction. I moved
quickly and get all the other things
that I need to buy. In the cashier lane,
I had the chance to bump into an old
friend. We usually hug and kiss each
other in the cheek whenever we
meet, but that time, we hardly shook
hands or got closer at all. However,
we had a small and distant talk.

4. New normal is indeed nostalgic.

“Sorry I couldn’t hug you. I missed

you. I bet you are missing a lot of things
these days as well.” Karlo said. Karlo is
my best friend for more than ten years
now. We spend the holidays together
every year and our families are also
closed. Last year, he had to go abroad
for his training. I have not seen him ever
since.
“I missed you too, and yes, I am
missing so many things, and I hope for
the old days to be back soon.”, I replied
to him.
It is depriving that we have to
meet that way after a long time of not
seeing each other, but I am also glad that
I had the chance to see him in this
nostalgic new normal.
“Soon?”
“Soon.”, we said as we waived
goodbye. Then I went back home, in the
same face mask and surgical gloves. I
walked the same path and heard the
same tolerable noise, but this time, I took
my time.

8
You may be wondering why I suddenly felt grateful amidst our current
situation. Do not judge me for I have my explanations.

1. Blessed are we who can walk a safe path

and who eat at home with our family.

Just like the tricycle drivers, there are

also a lot of people who had to take sacrifices
and make adjustments to help eliminate the
virus. A huge number of people are affected
because they have to lose their only ways to
earn enough for their loved ones. While others
were fighting for their lives because they
already got infected and I cannot imagine how
frightened and in pain they are.

These things made me realized that I am still blessed. I am blessed to have a

job that allows work-from-home alternative work arrangement. I am blessed that I
am with my family and we are all safe and not ill. I am blessed to be able to address
our needs and to have foods to eat. I find myself blessed because there are people
who do not get to be as lucky as I am, so I think that is enough reason already to be
grateful. Right now, I sincerely pray that the suffering of all people will end soon.

2. Hope for a brighter day for the

heroes of today.

June is supposed to be a rainy

month. Though I am not an expert, but I
guess that a sunlight would be much
better than a heavy rainfall in this time
of the year. For that, I am grateful for
the bright sun that serves a positive
spirit. I am grateful that the frontliners in
checkpoints, hospitals, government,
and establishments that assist us in our
needs do not have to go through a
perilous rain and thunders on top of the
harm that the pandemic is already
bringing to their lives. This is not the
time to be unprotected and sick so I am
truly hoping that our frontliners will all
remain healthy and safe. Their service
is indeed beyond description and I am
sure that the world is gratified.

9
3. Stay positive.

I barely get to see the people close to me

in flesh these days. Lucky I am, I had the
chance to see one of my favorite people on
earth on the very first time that I went out to the
new normal. I think that is one sign that we have
to remain positive to attract good spirit
regardless of the negative connotation of the
word, “positive” these days. That time,
I considered my best friend as my “good spirit of
the day” sent as a sign from all angels.

4. Everything takes time.

I walked back home with clear skies above

me. I guess nature had the chance to recover
from negligence of humans as well. We have
abused the earth at some point of our lives and
that cannot be denied. The earth is in our hands
to take care of. Just like us, it also deserves to
take time to remain itself be a safe place for us to
live in. Hopefully, we, people, would see its worth
this time around and would also take time to
reflect in knowing the world and ourselves
deeper.
As I walked back home, I have come to
realize a lot more in just less than a day. I
wonder how the people with much bigger
obligations to carry on their shoulders are even
thinking now. Maybe they have a lot more to
share, to think of, or barely a time to spare. I
am not in the position to speak for them. I am
not trying to romanticize the situation we are in
right now neither. All I am trying to say is that,
the new normal is also teaching us to see the
real world. It shows us the importance of
everything, from the most usual and simplest
up to the most essential. It allows us to take
care of ourselves, to clean our surroundings, to
be mindful of our actions, and to be distantly
united. It teaches us all the ironies of today and
to appreciate the people who are giving all they
can so we can all win against this crisis.

10
It made us feel afraid so we can all be careful and not be always impulsive. It
made us realize that we can live on either less or more than we thought we could.
Most of all, the new normal definitely teaches us to be grateful and to keep going
amid this challenging time.
Every time I go out, I still feel the same oddness and fear for myself because
of the real enemy that is imperceptible and still undetermined to all of us, but I make
sure to do the right thing, to be cautious, to take time, to pray, and to be grateful.
I do things not only for myself anymore, but definitely for others as well. I am not
alone, neither do you, and just like every struggle we faced before, this too will end
soon.
Soon? Soon.

Give Me Your Thoughts!

Share your thoughts about the article you read and answer the following questions.

1. What is the article about? It is about the journey of the author in the new normal.
2. What are your realizations during this crisis? Do you have the same experience as the writer of
the article? As a teenager / student, I also experience having a fear and I am really not
comfortable with this new normal but like the author, I realized that we need to be strong
and just think that this pandemic will end soon and we can go back to the normal.
3. How would you define the challenges brought by the pandemic based on how the writer shared her
experience? Just like what we’ve seen in some scenes in movies, this is indeed historical.
4. Explain your understanding of the line, “I am not trying to romanticize the situation we are in right now
neither. All I am just trying to say is that, the new normal is also teaching us to see the real world.”
The author is not saying that this pandemic is good for us but shes implying too look on the
brighter side.
5. How would you work on knowing yourself and contributing to the society in this challenging time? I will
read and learn from the stories and experience of other and reflect to them. I will contribute by
simply wearing mask when leaving, following the social distancing, and most of all by staying
at home.

11
Directions: Analyze the following realizations based on how it is explained in the
article and give your opinions and views about it. Do you agree or disagree?

1. Transportation is hardly an option.

- Agree, because some people are stuck in the traffic and sometimes hard to find
a vehicle for transport.
2. The sun is verily bright, but the world feels odd.
- Disagree, because like the sun we should always focus on the bright side, let’s
all fight and be free from this pandemic.Maybe the worlds feels odd but we can still
see every beautiful smiles from each everyone that will make our day bright.
3. I have never felt so “distant.”
- Agree, because of this pandemic we really need space, literally space in
everyone even in our family. This sounds sad but this is what we need now.
4. New normal is indeed nostalgic.
- Agree, because I know that everyone was yearning for the happiness of the
former time.
5. The new normal definitely teaches us to be grateful and to keep going amid this
challenging time.
- Agree, because even though we are experiencing this changes in our country, we
can still find a way to be happy, to be safe and to enjoy the life in this pandemic.

The use of adverbs in a sentence helps describe how things appear and how
things happen. With adverbs, you can add further description, describe an
action, or intensify the meaning of another word.
In this lesson, we will discuss two of its types that could also be applied in
analytical listening in the context of new normal.

What is Analytical Listening?

Analytical Listening is the ability and the capacity to properly analyze what is
being said. This not only means understanding what the other person is saying,
you can also analyze through texts, symbols, situations,
or conversations.

12
⦿ FREQUENTLY USED ADVERBS OF AFFIRMATION AND NEGATION ⦿

Adverb of Affirmation
It is an adverb used in a sentence to affirm it as true. Generally, these adverbs
are used to answer the questions raised by others. Adverbs of affirmation can also
be used in agreeing to arguments or to express a sure or positive answer.

frontliners will all remain healthy and safe.
4. Their service is indeed beyond description and I am sure that the world is
gratified.
5. I exactly know the right thing to do.

13
Adverb of Negation
Negation is completely opposite from affirmation. It is an adverb used in a
sentence to deny it as true. Adverbs of negation can also be used in disagreeing to
arguments or to express a disbelief or negative answer.
Words ending in ‘not’ (including contraction) and words starting with no- are
also examples of negation. Some of its examples are have not, do not, cannot,

got closer at all.
4. I almost ran out of words.
5. I would not understand the situation unless I see it for myself.

You did great!

I can see that you can clearly understand the adverbs of affirmation and
negation. Always remember to check if the adverbs that you use are appropriate
in your statements.
Now that you have no other question, let us move on for more.

14
INDEPENDENT ACTIVITY 1:
NEW NORMAL HEROES!

Directions: Using the adverbs of affirmation, write the contributions and act of
heroism of the following frontliners that inspire you to be a future hero. Write your

TOTD! TRIVIA OF THE DAY!

A circulating meme telling that, “it doesn't matter in what order

the letters in a word are, the only important thing is that the first
and last letter be at the right place” is not scientifically proven
to be true. Clearly, the first and last letter is not the only thing
that you use when reading a text. Mind blown?

Now You Know!

Analytical Listening is the ability and the capacity to properly analyze what is being
said. It can also be used in analyzing situations, texts, symbols, or conversations.

An adverb used in a sentence to affirm it as true refers to adverb of affirmation. It is

also used to express a sure or positive answer or to agree in a statement or argument.

On the other hand, adverb of negation is an adverb used in a sentence to deny it as

true. It is also used to express a disbelief or negative answer or to disagree in a
statement or argument.

It is vital to analyze your thoughts and statements before you express it. Check the
proper usage of each word first to make sure that you are using it in the correct and
appropriate way.

Now more than ever, we must realize the value of life. We must be grateful with the
little and big things that we have. Take time to ponder of what is more important, and
mostly, contribute to our fight against this battle in the simplest way you can, this
includes following all precautions and staying at home. Do this for all people, for the
world, and especially for our country.

Aside from the virus itself, there are still other effects and issues that our
society is facing these days due to the unexpected transition to the new normal.
One of these is the rising number of people with mental health problems.
In line with this, listen to different reliable news report or documentaries
regarding the mental health concerns in our country. Analyze the sources you
choose and write an essay to express your perspective about it in a separate sheet
of paper. Share its problems and possible solutions you have in mind.
Use the adverbs of affirmation and negation in giving your arguments.
Remember to use appropriate language and give proper citation to the sources of
your gathered information.

“MENTAL HEALTH”
Do you have any idea about Mental Health? What’s the causes and
effects? Who mostly get this or have this? What should do if ever that a
person has this? Mental Health? Hmm...

Mental health, defined by the World Health Organization, is “a state of

well-being in which the individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope
with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is
able to make a contribution to his or her community”.The three core
components of this definition are well-being, effective functioning of an
individual, and effective functioning for a community. According to the WHO,
mental health includes "subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy,
autonomy, competence, inter-generational dependence, and self-actualization
of one's intellectual and emotional potential, among others". From the
perspectives of positive psychology or of holism, mental health may include
an individual's ability to enjoy life and to create a balance between life
activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience. Cultural differences,
subjective assessments, and competing professional theories all affect how
one defines "mental health”.Stress is really a cause of mental health,
including stress from relationships, finances, medical illness, work, school,
and other stressors. Also by experiencing a traumatic event by all means and
family history.Definitely mental health are common in the United States.
According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly one in five U.S.
adults live with a mental illness that is about 46.6 million. Almost 2.5 million
Veterans received treatment in a VA mental health specialty program in fiscal
every year. Surely, around 63% (179 million) were females, relative to 105
million males.

Absolutely there are ways that we can do to manage mental health. First
connect with others; Get active; Keep on learning; Give to others; Be aware of
yourself and the world; Mental health. Grounding exercises; Pleasant
activities to do; Problem solving; Unhelpful thinking patterns; Living by your
values; Expectations and making changes; Why you might think about getting
a pet; How music can support your well-being. Never give up on doing things
that will make us free from the things that was brought by mental health. Do
not do thing that will make the situation worse. I hope that each and everyone
will be alright at the right time. And lastly, I salute those that surpassed this
problem in their lives, you are truly a strong person!

Good job! You made it this far! You did not only learn the effective use of
adverbs of affirmation and negation, but you are also able to apply it in sharing your
views and experiences in the new normal setting.
Millions of people face changes that are brought by the pandemic. Many
Filipinos have also been affected by it. With that, write a letter of advice that tells on
how to cope with the challenges of today, and how to view our current situation
through the lens of acceptance, optimism, and hope. Remember to apply what you
have learned from this module.

Note to Youth
We need to use particular words of affirmation or negation to express our views and
arguments in most appropriate and precise way. And while you are learning, remember
to take time as well to strengthen the spirit of your hope and faith to the world and its
people, especially to our nation, as we altogether win against this pandemic.

Dear classmates,

I really know that this changes brought something new to us. The new normal
that changed the life that we’re experiencing before, the things that we always do
before is different from the things that we do now, the style of the learning we’ve
accustomed since we were child is now different, and this pandemic that gave too
much stress and pain in each person not only for us students but also for the whole
population in the world. But we should be strong face this pandemic, we should be
careful to be safe, we should follow rules, and we should do the right things. Some of
the students almost suicide because of depression but most of them were cheered
up by their families because of the pressure that surrounds them. This is just a
pandemic, we are Filipino citizens we can survive to this! We should not problem this
problem because this will definitely cause another problem and another cause of
stress to us because obviously God give this problem to us because He knows that
we can pass this, that we can get through this. Let’s always remember that there is
a rainbow after the storm, maybe this pandemic will cause too many problems,
changes and complications to us but we can totally get the lesson after the end of
this crisis.

We should never give up fighting! We should do our best by all means to pass
this pandemic. The frontliners do their parts that were hardly to do because of the
virus but they were serving us even though their life is in danger. Let’s pray that
someday this pandemic will end and everything going back to what it was before and
it will become alright again. Stay safe and may God bless you and your family. <3

Love,
Vaidhie Joy T. Abesamis
