FINAL EXAM

REVIEW SHEET

This is the review for your final exam. It includes concepts from Chapters 7-9. Remember that this final
exam is 5% of your grade. Start studying NOW! Use this study guide in conjunction with tests, notes, etc. The
order of priority for your studying should be: (1) notes from class and problem sets, (2) old tests, and (3) your
textbook. The questions on the final will be similar but not identical to questions on old tests and problem sets.
You will have a reference sheet that includes ions, the periodic table, electronegativities, and an activity series.

BEFORE THE MIDTERM

1. Be able to write the correct number of significant digits when performing

calculations.
2. Be able to write numbers in scientific notation and vice versa.
3. Be able to round numbers correctly.

SINCE THE MIDTERM

BONDING: Chapters 7-8

1. Discuss the various types of bonding (ionic, covalent, metallic)
2. Predict and define various types of bonding between elements using the
understanding of bonding and periodic properties.
3. Predict various types of chemical bonds that form between the elements using the
VSEPR theory (geometric shapes – linear, trigonal planar, tetrahedral, pyramidal, and
bent).

CHEMICAL NOMENCLATURE: Chapters 7-8

4. Write the chemical formula of any ionic compound, molecular compound, or acid
compound given its name.
5. Write the chemical name for any ionic compound, molecular compound, or acid
compound given its chemical formula.

CHEMICAL REACTIONS: Chapter 9

7. Identify the reactants and products in a chemical equation.
8. Write a balanced chemical equation when given the names or formulas of all the
reactants and products in a chemical reaction.
9. Classify a reaction a synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double
replacement, or combustion.
10. Be able to correctly use the activity series for metals and nonmetals in a single
replacement reaction.
11. Predict the products of double replacement and single replacement reactions.
