LABORATORY EXERCISE Form ID: AO 006-B

Rev. No.: 00
Issued Date: 22 Feb 2022

Week Number 2
Laboratory Title Design and validation of PMS
Name of Student Negroprado, Jomar T.
Year and Section BSMarE 3 - ALPHA
Subject Maintenance & Repair
Learning
Validate the planned maintenance system
Outcomes

Instructions: Choose any equipment that you are familiar with and design a
Planned Maintenance System for that particular equipment.

Centrifugal Pump Maintenance Procedure

NAME OF THE EQUIPMENT/PROPERTY: CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

LOCATION: FRESHWATER GENERATOR

ACTIVITY / STEPS INDICATORS

1. Bearing and Lubricant Condition Lubricant oil should be clear with no signs of bubbling.
If there is an increase in vibration in the bearings, this
may be a good indicator of impending bearing failure.

2. Shaft Seal Condition There should be no signs of visible leakage in the

mechanical seals. If the packing looks compressed and
dry, replace the packing and add lubricant per the
operation manual.

3. Overall Pump Vibration Imminent pump failure can be detected by monitoring

overall pump vibration. Excessive vibration can result
from a change in pump alignment, bearing failures,
cavitation, and obstructions in the suction and discharge
lines.

4. Pump Discharge Pressure The difference in pressure read by the suction and
discharge gauges will provide the total developed head
pressure of the pump. Confirm this reading is within the
pump’s designed performance.

NAME OF THE EQUIPMENT/PROPERTY: CENTRIFUGAL PUMP

LOCATION: FRESHWATER GENERATOR

ACTIVITY / STEPS INDICATORS

1. Integrity of the pump’s foundation Check the hold-down bolts for tightness and check the
condition of the foundation for breakage.

2. Oil Change Change the oil after the first 200 hours of operation for
a new pump. Every three months or 2,000 operating
hours. Operation manual will have specific instructions
for oil change intervals and oil grade. Change oil in
hydraulic governors.

3. Motor and Pump Bearings Grease the motor bearings according to the
manufacturer’s instructions. Bearing vibration spectrum
on all pump and motor bearings.

4. Check drive shaft alignment Observe if there is deviation in the shaft and possible
vibrations.

5. Clean oiler bulbs and level windows Oiler bulbs and level windows have a lot of dirt and
debris.

LOCATION: FRESHWATER GENERATOR

ACTIVITY / STEPS INDICATORS

1. Inspect Disc Coupling Thoroughly inspect disc coupling for signs of wear & cracks
in lamination. Tighten bolts.

2. Check the Coupling Alignment Using a dial indicator, check the coupling alignment with the
equipment coupled. Use special coupling indicator clamps
where possible. Ensure that thermal growth allowance is
correct.

3. Coupling Deflection Using an indicator clamped on the coupling, depress and lift
on each coupling and note the dial indicator change.
Determine if the deflection is normal for this machine. Refer
to OEM manual.

4. Axial Float and Drive Shaft Using an indicator check axial float of the pump & the driver
shaft deflection is normal for this machine. Refer to OEM
manual.

5. Checking of Sentinel Valve Remove turbine sentinel valve. Shop test & adjust to proper
setting.

6. Inspect trip and throttle valve stems Inspect trip and throttle valve stems and their linkages for
wear. Check over-speed mechanism for wear. (Turbine must
be down).

7. Inspect Flyball Seat, Spring, Bearing & Remove mechanical the governor cover & inspect flyball
Plunger seat, spring, bearing & plunger for wear.

8. Checking of the operation of trip valve Uncouple from pump & overspeed turbine. Ensure that trip
valve will stop turbine with steam supply valve (throttle
valve) fully open. Compare tripping speed with previous
records. Adjust trip mechanism & repeat procedure. Follow
manufacturer’s instructions when making adjustments.

9. Test Run the Turbine Test run the turbine coupled to the pump. When not possible,
run the turbine uncoupled. With a tachometer, verify proper
governor operation & control. Determine if hand (booster)
valves are completely closed when required to carry load.
