Frictional wear occurs when two surfaces slide over each other, this leads to

wearing down of both surfaces. In an engine, this friction appears between the
cylinder liner and piston rings. The frictional wear depend upon various factors
such as the speed of moving parts between the surfaces, the materials involved,
temperature, the load on engine, pressure, lubrication, and combustion efficiency.
Frictional wear cannot be eliminated, but can be reduced. This can be done by using
the correct grade of lubricant, by properly treating fuel oil, by maintaining
correct operation temperature and by doing regular inspection work for early
detection for any wear and tear. Ignoring this problem may lead to faults, such as
overheating and total breakdown of engine.
