Lesson
Emotional Intelligence
1
Imagine the world without emotions. Things would be colorless and lifeless. We are humans
because of our capacity to experience complex levels of emotions. As an adolescent, one deals with a
variety of emotions. Some emotions are new and feeling them would seem overwhelming that’s why
teens tend to really go emotional.
Another aspect to talk about emotions is its relationship with IQ or intellectual Quotient. Back
in the days, people gave more importance to IQ. Things have changed and our generation has somewhat
found a balance of having high IQ and high EQ. Previous topics in this subject talked about how our
mind works. This time around, let’s talk about emotional intelligence. In this topic, we are going to
learn more about emotions, its importance, and how to deal with it.

What’s New

Plutchik’s Wheel of Emotion

Source: Ad Planner’s Pocketbook (Wordpress.com)

The psychologist Robert Plutchik created the wheel of emotions which could help us better
understand the various aspects of emotions. He suggested 8 primary bipolar emotions: joy versus
sadness; anger versus fear; trust versus disgust; and surprise versus anticipation. Additionally, his
circumplex model makes connections between the idea of an emotion circle and a color wheel. Like
colors, primary emotions can be expressed at different intensities and can mix with one another to form
different emotions.

Emotions and their counterparts:
Joy Sadness
Fear Anger
Anticipation Surprise
Disgust Trust

According to the wheel of emotion, the emotions that are nearer to the core arte the more intense
ones. As suggested, ecstasy (a form of joy), for instance, is thus the most intense, while serenity is the
least. The intensity diminishes as it moves outward of the core. Also, the darker the shade, the more
intense the emotion is.

What is It

The Eight Basic Emotions

The Wheel can be used to navigate between the various intensities that emotions bring along
and evoke. As such, the Wheel is primarily useful for objectively identifying intense feelings. Robert
Plutchik’s research showed that there are 34,000 distinguishable emotions. However, it is actually
impossible to differentiate and understand all 34,000 emotions. By reducing these to eight primary
emotions, things become a little simpler.
1. Joy
It is the feeling of happiness. It is synonymous to gladness, delight, and bliss. Intense
forms are ecstasy, elation, and euphoria.
2. Sadness
The feeling of being unhappy, gloomy or lonely. Its synonyms are grief, sorrow,
desolation, and melancholy.
3. Fear
The feeling of being scared, frightened, or anxious. Related words are dread, distress,
horror, fright, and terror.

4. Anger
The feeling of being mad, irate, or annoyed. A stronger version is rage or fury.
5. Disgust
That is what we feel when something is wrong, erroneous, or dirty. Its synonyms are
revulsion, antipathy, and aversion.

6. Trust
This is a positive emotion which also means confidence and belief. Admiration is its
stronger form.
7. Anticipation
It constitutes looking forward to something good or positive that, one believes, will
happen.
8. Surprise
This is what we feel when something we do not expect happens. It also means
amazement or shock.

Activity 2: Owning My Own Mistakes

given the chance to answer that same question, how will you answer it? (Write your answer in a
separate sheet of paper)

Question: What is the biggest thing you’ve ever done in your life and what did you do to make it
right?
Answer:
__________________________________________________________________________________

What’s More

Emotional Intelligence

Source: fourcornerformula.com

Emotional Intelligence is the ability to understand, use, and manage our emotions. Emotional
Intelligence is sometimes called EQ (or EI) for short. Just as a high IQ can predict top test scores, a
high EQ can predict success in social and emotional situations. EQ helps us build strong relationships,
make the right decisions, and deal with stressful situations.
As we know, it is not always the smartest people who are the most successful or the most
fulfilled in life. You probably know some of your classmates or friends who are academically competent
and yet are socially incompetent and unsuccessful at work or in their personal relationships. So, we can
conclude that intelligent quotient (IQ) in itself is not enough to achieve success in life. True enough,
your IQ can help you get good grades or help you achieve your college dream. Nevertheless, your EQ
will help you manage the stress and emotions when facing examinations. Both IQ and EQ need to work
together. It is proven to be most effective when a person has both.

Emotional Intelligence requires the following five qualities:
Self-awareness – How and what am I feeling at any moment in time? How does my behavior impact
others? How confident am I about myself and my abilities?
Motivation – Effective motivation requires a persistent positive attitude towards very clearly defined
goals. We expect and overcome obstacles instead of viewing them with a defeating permanence.
Self-regulation – Processing emotions effectively means that we are able to read situations accurately.
As a result, we are better able to devise appropriate responses. To respond to life’s emotional challenges,
we must know our patterns of emotional response.
Social skills – Humans are social animals. One must be able to relate with others.
Empathy – Empathy is the ability to place oneself in the shoes of another.

Activity 3: Artspression
Instructions: Abstract art was one of the art movements you studied in Grade 10. Creating an
abstract art is a powerful way of translating our emotions to an art piece. In any drawing
material, make an abstract art portraying an unforgettable event in your life. Your artwork
maybe in a form of digital art or traditional art. Use any medium or material. Don’t forget to
utilize the colors in the “Wheel of Emotions” to vividly portray that significant event. Do not
forget to coin an impactful name of your masterpiece. Below is the rubrics in visual arts for your
guidance.
