INTRODUCTION

In this SBA I intend to find out the effects of flooding caused by hurricanes on the citizens of
Negril. A survey was done on the victims who were affected by natural hazards and disasters in
Negril, Jamaica. Data was collected from the victims to help reduce the effects of natural
hazards and disasters.
AIM OF STUDY

To investigate the causes of flooding in Negril, Jamaica, and the possible solutions to
reduce the effects of natural hazards and disasters.
LOCATION OF STUDY

The location of the study is Negril, Westmoreland, Jamaica. Two maps is presented which
includes the map of jamaica and a site map of Negril’s coastal community. The first map (map of
jamaica) shows the general location of the study area, that is, the region in the country where the
study is located. The map also shows features close to the study area and parishes and capitals.
The second map (Site Map), shows the area covered by the study in more detail.
METHOD OF DATA COLLECTION

Thirty members of the Negril community were issued a self-administered questionnaire (see
appendix) on February 4, 2023, to February 5, 2023. Questionnaires were brought to the home of
the community members to be completed at the time given. The community members don’t live
on the same avenue; hence questionnaires were given out on foot within two days.
ANALYSIS AND PRESENTATION OF DATA

The aim is to investigate the extent to which members of the Negril community prepare for a
hurricane. With the aid of 30 residents of the community, questionnaires were completed of
which 19 were males and 11 were females. Majority of the residents living in the community
were over the age of 28 and lived in the community for 5 years. From the research residents use
different ways to monitor the progress of a hurricane, either by television, radio or other ways.
When a hurricane warning is issued, residents carry out different preparation methods such as
trimming trees, securing windows and protecting important documents etc.
DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS
CONCLUSION

To investigate the extent to which members of the Negril community prepare for a
hurricane, questionnaires where completed by residents. There were 3 strategies that were used
mostly by residents. These include store drinking water in the case of local water sources being
contaminated, 100% purchases canned goods because it non-perishable all ranking 100% buys
candles to give them light when the light is down. The least strategy used by 20% residents
where Securing roof with hurricane straps. The most used tool to monitor the progress of a
hurricane is a radio because radios can be powered by batteries when the power is out so that
they can still be aware of hurricane progress and the least used tool is the telephone as its battery
will die and always there will be no service as phone companies will try to protect their system.
It was also concluded that residents of the Negril community are aware of the
necessary preparation strategies to carry out in case of a hurricane.
