WRITING
Exercise 3

Can describe places and lifestyles

Sample answer

Your teacher has asked you to write a description of a camping trip you have been on. Write your
description in the next column.
In your description, you should write about:
 where you went
 where you stayed
 what you did while you were there
 how you felt at the end of the trip.
Write your description in 110–130 words.

My weekend in the wild!

Last weekend I went on a trip with my class – into the wild! It was quite an adventure.
We went on the school bus and ended up near a forest. When we first got there, we had to build shelters so
that we could sleep in them. Then we collected food to make a fire, and made our first meal outside. It was
delicious!
After that we went to look for wildlife in the forest, and we learnt about the creatures that live there. At night
we all slept outside, or stayed up and chatted, and watched the stars.

We had a great time, and when I got home, I felt I knew a lot more about the countryside – and how to survive
in the wild!

Exercise 3

Can write notes and make requests

Sample answer

You recently had a day out in the city centre with your friend Josh and his family. Write a note to Josh in
the next column.

In your note, you should

 thank Josh and his family for the day out

 say what you enjoyed doing on the trip
 ask to see Josh’s photos of the trip
 suggest something you and Josh could do together soon.

Write your note in 110–130 words.

Hi Josh,

Just a quick note to thank you for the great day out with you and your family in the city centre last week.

I had a good time, and I really enjoyed going to the Science Museum. That was cool! I liked the model of the
space rocket the best. I loved the pizza place we went to, too – they were the best pizzas ever!

I’m afraid my photos of the day weren’t brilliant, though. Would you mind sending me yours? And if you’d like,
we could meet at the café in town after school next Wednesday. We could have something to eat and look at
the photos together. Would that be possible? Let me know if that’s OK.

See you soon.

Sample answer

Your teacher has asked you to write a story. Write your story in the next column. The story must begin
with this sentence:

Anna was walking along the street when a thief took her bag!

Write your story in 110–130 words.

Anna was walking along the street when a thief took her bag! Anna was so surprised that she didn’t know
what to do. Inside the bag was her birthday money, because she was going into town to buy some new
shoes. But the thief was already escaping. Just then, two policemen appeared and started chasing the thief.
He climbed over a wall and ran – with Anna’s bag still in his hand! Luckily, though, he suddenly tripped and
fell – and the two policemen were able to catch him easily. They gave Anna her bag, checked she was OK,
and then took the thief to the police station.

Anna was very pleased to get her bag back. She continued into town and bought a wonderful pair of shoes –
and a big ice cream as a reward! All’s well that ends well!

Sample answer

You have two tickets to a music concert in your town. You would like your friend Jo to go with you.
Write an email to Jo.

In your email, you should

 tell Jo some news about yourself,

 invite Jo to the concert,
 give Jo some details about the concert,
 suggest what you could do together after the concert.

Write your email in 110–130 words.

To: Jo
Subject: Concert

Hi Jo,
Thanks for your last email. It was great to hear from you and get all your news.
I’ve just finished my exams, so I’m really happy – and we’re going on holiday soon, so I’m really looking forward to
that.
By the way, I was wondering if you’d like to come to a concert with me? I’ve got two tickets – my parents gave them to
me as a present! It’s a rock concert, taking place next Saturday at 7.30, at the City Concert Hall. It’ll be brilliant! Then,
afterwards, we could go and have a pizza together at my favourite cafe!
I do hope you’d like to come. Let me know if you can make it.
Bye for now.

Hi Sam,
I’m very pleased you’re coming to stay with us! We’re all looking forward to seeing you!
I’ve made a few plans for while you’re here. Maybe one day, we could go to the city centre and visit all the
famous places there, and then another day we could do some sport, which I know you like. There’s a lake
near here, and we can go kayaking or horse riding if you like.
You should bring summer clothes with you, but also some warm sweaters and a raincoat. The weather is
quite bad this summer!
I’ll be at the airport with my parents. I’m sending a photo, just in case you can’t find us!
Don’t worry about anything – we’re going to have fun!
See you soon,
Best wishes

Jane got off her bike and looked at the map. A boy in her class, called Sam, gave it to her the day before the
school holidays started. She looked carefully – it said she had to go towards the beach. So off she went. She
could soon hear the sound of the sea. It was a beautiful sunny day, and there were quite a few families on the
beach, playing in the sand or swimming in the sea.
She looked around. Then she noticed some young people playing volleyball, next to a small tent. Some of
them looked like her classmates – and there was Sam! She left her bike and walked towards them. While she
was walking, Sam suddenly saw her. ‘Hi, Jane,’ he called. ‘Come and join us – for an end-of-year party!’
