Individual Task 1
I. List 5 definitions of art from famous artists, philosophers and/or authors. Write a brief
explanation on each definition.

All art is but imitation of nature.

To other people, art is just an instance of mimesis of imitations

from nature. This idea dominated throughout centuries of art
history. Nowadays, art has now developed a deeper
meaning, but the thought of art being an imitation of nature
is not a really a bad thing. The world is full of wonders and the
Lucius Annaeus Seneca world itself and everything in it is a work of art. Art is used as a
(c. 4 B.C.E.—65 C.E.) way to idealize the beauty of nature as a form of
appreciation.

Art is a human activity, consisting in this, that one person

consciously, by certain external signs, conveys to others
feelings he has experienced, and other people are affected
by these feelings and live them over in themselves.”

Art is a form of expression. It is used to convey feelings,

emotions, as well as ideas. Through art, artists have a means Leo Tolstoy
to properly portray their unique and individual emotions. (1847–1910)
These ideas can be sometimes captured or understood by
the viewers, making them somehow feel what artists are
trying to express. But even if these emotions will not reach the
viewers, the fact that an artwork is a materialization of the
artist’s mind, at one point of his/her life, will never change.
Art is the queen of all sciences communicating
knowledge to all the generations of the world.

Art is also a means of communication. It is way of transmitting

to the people or the viewers what the artist felt or
experienced by means of movements, lines, colors, sounds,
Leonardo da Vinci or forms. Because of art, the people of the past and of
(1452-1519) previous generations can communicate to the people of the
future. Art serves as sort of like a time capsule where we can
gather knowledge from the past, learn from them, and
improve them.

Art is not a mirror held up to reality, but a

hammer with which to shape it.

Art can express a deeper sense of reality and convey certain

knowledge. People often use art to raise awareness and
promote their causes. For that reason, it can also contribute
to the changing the world and the general public’s Berthold Brecht
sensibilities and attitudes. Just like how writers yield their pen, (1898-1956)
artists use their artworks as their weapons as well.

Art enables us to find ourselves and lose

ourselves at the same time.

Artist do artworks as a form of self-realization and self-

reflection. It helps them realize their deepest desires,
thoughts, and dreams. Due to that they figure out things
Thomas Merton about themselves that they did not know existed. They lose
(1915-1968) themselves in the process. But eventually, they will find
another version of themselves with a better understanding of
who they are. This is the reason why an artist deeply connect
with their works.
II. Choose an object or image which you think best define of describe art. Explain your
choice.

Bodies of Water
Art is like different bodies of water. Some are vast, but some are narrow;
some are deep, while others are shallow, some have wonders on the surface,
while others can be found deep below. Art can help us be entertained and
refresh our mind like the rivers. It can calm our mind like the lakes. But can also be
boundless to the point where we might get lost in it like the ocean. All forms of art
are different, but all of them have their own mystery and beauty. Artists are
fascinate by them so they chose to dive right in. Viewers, on the other hand,
appreciate it just by admiring it like a beautiful scenery. Art plays a big part of our
lives, as big probably as big as the amount of water in the Earth. It keeps us all
connected. It connects us just like how the water connects different bodies of
land, different people, and different species.
