Healthy Leisure Activities and lifestyle change group therapy for adolescents/ young adults

Recovery from psychiatric or co-occurring disorders.

Clients who are recovering from the above needs professional, mutual support to aid recovery. The
treatment that they require involves counseling, therapy, medication depending on each one's
disorders, the severity and the impact on one's life. The recovery is very vital hence treatment is
required. Knowledge of skills to manage the disorders and the problems of a client is crucial

Reminding clients about how continued use can impact their lives negatively could keep them from
relapse. Another important thing to do during the group therapy sessions is to ensure that the clients
are taking care of themselves;

a) Physically by taking medication and abstaining from alcohol, illicit or non- prescribed drugs, doing
exercises, eating healthy and getting enough sleep.

b) Psychological/ emotional..they should be positive and motivated to change by managing their


symptoms of illness, change thinking and manage moods and emotions in order to cope with the
stresses of life without relying on drugs and alcohol because this will only give them temporary pleasure.

c) Family the members of the family should be involved in treatment and recovery as well as improving
relationships and making amendments.

In considering the youth or young adults who are in recovery, it is necessary to engage them in groups
where they would learn healthy living activities, which would prevent them from getting bored and
indulging themselves in substance use. It is important to keep them busy with rewarding work and
activities in their road to recovery. There should be meetings where they get together with life coaches /
therapist and get into honest conversation about life, their fears and how they are coping to avoid
relapse. This is a great platform where they can express themselves and get help in making better
decisions on how to relate with their friends who are still using, how to handle themselves at work and
also how to cope with cravings. Some of the activities that could help them include music, athletic,
Interpersonal relationships , spiritual among others. They can also be taught how to write smart goals
which should guide them in time management.
