Today, Phoenix Columns and bridges which use them are
historically significant:
They represent rare surviving examples of a patented column
from the period where engineers were experimenting and
inventing new ways to work with wrought iron.

Phoenix Columns (and other patented brands of column) fell
from favor by the 20% Century.
Built-up beams riveted together from simple, common types of
rolled iron/steel (angle, channel, bar, and plate) performed the
same function cost-effectively and were not patented.

Originally erected in 1882 at Corrine, Utah as a replacement for
an original timber bridge over Bear Creek.
This was the Transcontinental Railroad line.
The 1882 bridge was replaced by a new bridge in 1901, with the
1882 bridge being relocated and reused over the McKenzie
River for the Mohawk Branch of the Southern Pacific Railroad
in Oregon.
