Frankenstein’s Cat by Emily

Anthens

A book review by Jacintha David

In Frankenstein’s Cat, Emily Athes, who is a

journalist, explores how biotechnology is shaping the future of
our furry and feathered friends. I really enjoyed this book as it
gives us a very interesting insight about bioengineering. The
author explains about the various issues pertaining to our
technology today such as gene modification and cloning. The
author takes us through a journey of real world examples from
the farm and the pet store to the pharmacy and the frozen arc.
It brings out bizarre ideas for us to think. One such
idea would be, to constantly wonder if the neighbour’s cat is
spying on us. Are bugs creepy? Is a pet very special that we
sometimes want to clone them so they never leave us? We could
manage to save our money and clone our pet, but we shouldn’t
expect it to have the same personality. These are just some of
the ideas presented in the book.

Questions 35- 40
You are going to read a blog article about bullying. Six sentences have been removed from
the article. Choose from the sentences (A-H) to fit each gap (35-40). There are two extra
sentences that you do not need to use. For each question, mark the correct answer ( A-H) on
your answer sheet.

BULLYING
Bullying has been a common social problem with delinquents and victims from various age groups in
schools. Firstly, we must all understand what bullying means along its many facets. 36 People in
35
general should understand the causes and effects of bullying and how we can help avoid such situations from
arising. We should all learn from where it starts and how to identify verbal and non-verbal signs from certain
children who are bullied in schools. 37
Apart from that, there are a number of ways we can help the victims. 38 Then, we should empower
them with necessary knowledge and skills to help them understand how to avoid the bully and what to do when
stuck in a situation with a bully. From here, we can ask them to see a counselor or teacher and confide in them
for the next course of action.
In most cases though, the victim is too intimidated or embarrassed to stand up for oneself. In such cases,
we can create awareness in every school and suggest a non-profit organisation to approach if they face such
difficulties. Befrienders is one such organisation that caters to help young adults. 39 In most cases, these
volunteers are trained professionals in the line of helping young people cope with any problems.
Bullying is indeed a social problem that might lead to other issues such as depression and low self-esteem
to the victims. 40 We must take action to increase the public’s awareness regarding this issue.

A We should never forget to take a video recording of a bullying incident

B We should also teach other children to speak up if their peer is being bullied
C Hence, as a member of the society, everyone must also be responsible in tackling this problem
D Volunteers who serve as counsellors are available 24/7 and can be sought for emotional problems
E Firstly, we should help the victims to identify and speak up if a peer or person with authority is bullying them
F Cyberbullying is also becoming more serious nowadays
G To do so, we should first create awareness of bullying
H As a bystander, there are many things we can do to help avoid such incidents from taking place.
