Description of Generating Set

• LIAG / MAN Marine Diesel Generating Sets produce electricity for several applications depending
on the kind of generating set. A generator, with the help of a diesel engine, produces power to be
used on your ship as an auxiliary for daily use, in harbour mode or as an emergency generating set.

• The LIAG / MAN Generating Set is build by Lindenberg-Anlagen GmbH in Rösrath, Germany. The
main component, the engine, is made by MAN. All spare parts and equipment are available from
Lindenberg-Anlagen GmbH - Spare Parts Department (Spares@lindenberg-anlagen.de). Please
use the spare part numbers which can be found in this documentation for an easy and fast
procedure.

• For technical help or in case of any damages please contact our Service Department
(Service@lindenberg-anlagen.de). Please keep the intervals of maintenances work and follow
the descriptions by manufacturer to prevent unnecessary damages.

Instructions to avoid errors and damages:
(Most instructions are also summarized in the checklist in Amendment no. 1)

Important instructions
• It may be used only the manufacturer released and specified service and maintenance materials.
(For example filter, lube oil...)

• No warranty can be granted for damages, when the damage is based on working without
consideration of the regulations and / or the operating instructions. If any information cannot be
found in the documentation, please contact LIAG.

Transport
• Keep the instructions for transport and moving. LIAG gives you detailed instruction but you also
need to inform about national and local rules of transportation.

• Only use the bolts, designed for transport to lift up the gen set as shown in this example. Do not use
bolts directly on the engine or on the generator.

• Please see Transport description in Amendment 2 or at your Generating Set.

When lifting Generating Set always keep in mind that the lifting device
may brake.
Do not stand under Generating Set

Storage
• The generating set needs to be stored dry and safe. This includes no direct influence by weather or
seawater. The generating set must not dangle, incline nor be easily moveable.

• In case the generator set is stored for over 12 month the Engine needs to be conserved according
to MAN rule M3069-4 / C3 and arranged and confirmed by LIAG, otherwise warranty cannot be
granted.

Engines
• The LIAG / MAN commissioning certificate for generating sets has to be filled out for every engine.
It has to be sent back to Lindenberg-Anlagen GmbH - Service dept. The commissioning report can
be found in our Working / Final Documentation Chapter1 Notice / Documents.

• Please note that MAN can refuse warranty, if the commissioning certificate is not filled out
and sent back.

The running generating set makes a noise level above 80 dB (A).
Everybody in the Engine room or near running generating set must
use hearing protection!!

Surface of engine gets extremely hot. Do not touch or contact with

flame able material while or after engine runs!

Generator
• Check that all connection, cable glance and settings have been made as stated in operation /
installation and maintenance instructions by manufacturer to be found in working / final
documentation in Chapter 3 Alternator.

The open generator and cable glance may be energized with

dangerous voltage!

Coupling
• Check with a lamp if the coupling has any obvious damages before starting the engine for the first
time. Please repeat this check before each start of the generating set.

Cooling Water System

• The cooling water level has to be controlled before starting. The needed amount of cooling water for
your engine is stated in the Amendment No 1. Please also check MAN Operation Instruction for
correct filling.

• The requirements for the cooling water as hardness, chloride, sulphates and PH-value have to be
considered and the cooling water has to be filled up with the prescribed additives according to the
regulations of the MAN. These can be checked on the internet page by MAN
http://www.man-engines.com/en/Ship_motors/Ship_motors.jsp. → Approved service products.
The additives have to be filled in, independently of the outside temperature. The antifreeze and
corrosion protection prevents cavitations of the cooling water pump.

• Only use antifreeze according MAN standard 324.

• In the tropics there are also additives according MAN standard 249.

• Chemicals which are permitted for high power engines (for example MAN B&W) can not be used by
MAN engines.

• For auxiliary engines the cooling water pressure has to be controlled.

The cooling water and additives may be harmful and poisonous

substances!

Lubrication Oil System

• The lubrication oil level has to be controlled before start.

• Just use MAN approved Lubrication Oils. See: Fuels, Lubricants and Coolants for MAN Diesel
Engines, please check the approved products on the internet page by MAN
http://www.man-engines.com/en/Ship_motors/Ship_motors.jsp → Approved service products

• Lubricating oil has to be used according to MAN standard 3275 or 3277.

The Lube oil is strongly flame able. Do not smoke or light fire near
the engine or when refilling lube oil!

Fuel System
• The ship lateral installation, of fuel oil pre filter with water traps, has to be considered.

• The permissible suction height and tank level have to be considered.

• Crude oil is not allowed to be used for MAN High Speed engines.

The fuel oil is strongly flame able. Do not smoke or light fire near
the engine or the fuel oil tank!

Exhaust Gas System

• Compensators have to be inserted with pre loading.

• Please pay attention to the sufficient cross section.

• The line has to be checked to be free of work materials. (steel, papers, tags)

Exhaust System gets extremely hot. Do not touch or contact with
flame able material while or after engine runs!

Supply Air System

• The cross section of the supply air openings / channels are to be considered in sufficiently
dimensioned. So no water or dust is carried into the engine room.

The distance between in- and outflow holes must be long enough, so
that no short circuit develops!

The air cleaners have to be checked for contamination and damage

before the start.

Check screws if screws are tight and sealed. As well as air pressure
hoses are not damaged.

Compressed Air System (in case of air starter)

• The starting air pipes have to be clean and without condensation.

• It is not allowed to use oil in the start air pipes.

• In the ship lateral air supply line, has to be planned before the starter an air cleaner with automatic
water trap.

• Before using, each starter must have 18Æ30 bar starting pressure. (Depending on type of air
starter the starting pressure may vary.)

Battery Set (if provided by LIAG)

• Batteries need to be vented sufficiently and in adequate ambient temperature.

• Batteries may not remain discharged.

• Batteries may not be overloaded.

Furthermore attention should be paid to following points:

• All lines and connections have to be checked general for tightness. They have to be retightened if
necessary. This check has to be repeated over the whole period of operation time.

• The ambient temperature limit needs to be kept (depending on classification 45° C or 50° C) in the
engine room. Watch out for heating through exhaust material.
