Safety instructions

• Handling LIAG Generating Set and the necessary resources is no problem when the per-
sonnel commissioned with operation and maintenance are trained accordingly and use
their common sense.

• This is a summary of most important regulations, while working on the Generating Set per-
sonnel also have to read the chapters referring to the work which is going to be done , be-
cause MORE SPECIFIC SAFETY INSTRUCTION ARE TO BE FOUND IN THE WHOLE
DOCUMENTATION

• This Documentation does not refer to the general regulations on accident prevention or
local safety and / or operating regulations. The operator is responsible for complying with
these (if necessary by calling in additional installation staff).

The operation-safety of the delivered diesel generator set(s) can only
be guaranteed on designated use in strict accordance to the complete
documentation. The operator is responsible for following the instruc-
tions and complying with the safety requirements given in working and
final documentation, additional local rules and total ship system descrip-
tion. Smooth operation of the diesel generator set(s) can only be
achieved if installation and maintenance are carried out carefully in ac-
cordance with the rules generally applied in the field of mechanical en-
gineering and electrical engineering.

If any information cannot be found in the documentation, please

contact LIAG. The manufacturer takes no responsibility for the diesel
generator-set if the instructions are not followed to.

Before working with / installing the main components as engine or

generator, please also read instructions of original manufacturers.
Keep their safety instructions as well. If you cannot find these in-
structions in your documentation please contact LIAG.

The instructions and rules apply to the installation, commissioning, op-

eration and maintenance and any other kind of work close to or on the
plant.

The running generating set makes a noise level above 80 dB (A).

Everybody in the Engine room or near running generating set must
use hearing protection!!

The generating set includes turning parts. Always use protective

clothing.

For your safety LIAG strongly recommends to wear protective foot-

wear in the engine room.

Always wear eye protection. Especially when working with batteries
and with compressed air.

Always wear hand guards. Especially when working with batteries and
when opening plugs and drains.

Only qualified technicians and service personnel are allowed to oper-

ate, maintain and work with LIAG Marine Diesel Generating Sets. Dur-
ing all works you have to pay attention to the respective caution of the
specialist staff, because you interfere in technical control procedures
and monitoring. You must keep to the respective electrical and me-
chanical safety rules established in the standard specifications, instruc-
tions and documentations

In case of Warranty damages, damages may only be repaired with ex-

plicit permission by LIAG Service department.

Only LIAG approved spare parts may be used for LIAG generating sets

Some surface of Generating Set gets extremely hot. Do not touch or

contact with flame able material while or after engine runs! Before
working with the engine always wait until engine has cooled down.
Heating elements or cooling water system may also be hot when en-
gine was not running or has cooled down.

Fuel is inflammable. Do not smoke or use naked lights in its vicinity. The
tank must be filled only when the engine is switched off.
Parts of the generating set e.g. Batteries may cause dangerous damages
getting in contact with fire.

Always carry out maintenance work when the generating set is

switched off. If the generating set has to be maintained while it is run-
ning, e.g. changing the elements of change-over filters, remember
that there is a risk of scalding. Do not get too close to rotating parts.

The generator, the panel and some parts of the engine e.g. heating
elements can produce dangerous voltage. Only qualified personnel is
allowed to work on these parts. Do not contact with water and do not
open any of these parts without qualification and while generating set
is in service

Some generating sets include batteries.

Batteries include a risk of explosion because of a highly explosive

mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gases is evolved during battery
charging.

There is a danger of chemical burns: battery acid is extremely corro-

sive, therefore:

Wear protective gloves and eye protection. Do not tilt batteries, acid
can escape from the gas vent openings.

Please do not fill service products as anti freeze in container which can
be confused with drinking containers.

Exhaust gases are toxic. Comply with the instructions for the installation
of MAN Diesel engines which are to be operated in enclosed spaces.
Ensure that there is adequate ventilation and air extraction.

Neither tighten up nor open pipes and hoses (lube oil circuit, coolant
circuit and any additional hydraulic oil circuit) during the operation. The
fluids which flow out can cause injury.

Keep vicinity of generating set, ladders and stairways free of oil and
grease. Accidents caused by slipping can have serious consequences.

Never let the engine run when dry, i.e. without lube oil or coolant.

Never put cold coolant into an overheated engine.

Have the generating set maintained at the specific intervals.

Do not switch off the engine immediately when it is warm, but let it run
without load for about 5 minutes so that temperature equalization can
take place. Never put cold coolant into an overheated engine. See
“Maintenance and care”.

Do not add so much engine oil that the oil level rises above the max.
marking on the dipstick. Do not exceed the maximum permissible tilt of
the engine.

Serious damage to the engine may result if these instructions are not
adhered to.

Always ensure that the testing and monitoring equipment (for battery
charge, oil pressure, coolant temperature) function satisfactorily.

It is advisable to switch off the engine if an alarm of any kind is dis-

played in the engine monitoring and diagnostic system. If this is not
possible for any reason, the engine should be run no faster than 1200
rpm until the fault is remedied.

Do not let the seawater pump run dry. If there is a risk of frost, drain the
pump when the engine is switched off.

Health precautions:

• Avoid prolonged or repeated skin contact with used engine oil. Protect your skin by means
of suitable agents (creams etc.) or wear protective gloves. Clean skin which has been in
contact with engine oil. Wash thoroughly with soap and water. A nailbrush is an effective
aid. Certain products make it easier to clean your hands. Do not use petrol, Diesel fuel,
gas oil, thinners or solvents as washing agents. After washing apply a fatty skin cream to
the skin. Change oil-soaked clothing and shoes. Do not put oily rags into your pockets.

• Ensure that used engine oil is disposed of properly. Engine oil can endanger the water
supply!
