MODULE NO: 1

MODULE TITLE: RIZAL’S LIFE: HIGHER EDUCATION AND LIFE ABROAD

TOPIC: NO. 7

WRITER: GLENN C. BALBERAN, MAEd.

The Dominican Blessing

(13th Century Prayer)

OPENING PRAYER
May God the Father bless us.
May God the Son heal us.
May God the Holy Spirit enlighten us,
and give us eyes to see with,
ears to hear with,
hands to do the work of God with,
feet to walk with,
a mouth to preach the word of salvation with,
and the angel of peace to watch over us and lead us at last,
by our Lord’s gift to the Kingdom.

Amen.

“Education is a caprice in childhood, a passion in youth, a necessity in manhood,

and an elegy in old age.” – Jose Rizal

MODULE INTRODUCTION AND FOCUS QUESTIONS:

Rizal left the Philippines on May 3, 1882 not just to complete his medical studies in Europe. There were
hidden purposes for his voyage and pursue his mission. He focused on his journey and subsequent entry
into Spain and his gradual immersion into the Propaganda movement in Madrid. But, What was the real
purpose of his voyage to Spain? What were his educational achievements at Madrid? In what way he
became a marked man among the Spaniards in the Philippines? What made Rizal joined the Masonry in

Rizal, being disgusted with the method of instruction in the Dominican-owned University and
the racial prejudice of Dominican professors against Filipino student, because he want to obtain
a better education. Little did his Countrymen know that he had another mission, one that would
lead to him to inspire fellow revolutionaries through his writing, and to observe keenly the life
and culture, language and customs, industries and commerce, and government and laws of the
European nations in order to prepare himself on the mighty task of liberating his oppressed
people from Spanish tyranny.
