1)
a) 'Charming, silver-tongued and handsome, he cared little for those
under his command.'
b) This part of the excerpt explains some behaviors of Stefansson which
were well but cared little for those under his command.
c) This part of the excerpt implies the opposite of Stefansson's
behaviors and shows his disinterest in those under his command.

2)
a) ‘Hiring a steely skipper, Captain Bob Bartlett, Stefansson ordered the
Karluk to sea from Victoria in British Columbia on June 17th 1913. Few
of his men had real Arctic experience.’
… ‘The ship itself was a retired whaler, made of wood, staggeringly
unsuited to its new purpose.’
b)
In 1913, Vilhjalmur Stefansson, a Canadian anthropologist and
ethnologist, ordered the ship named 'Karluk' to sea from Victoria with a
hired and resolute captain. It was a withdrawn old 'whaler'; it was
astonishingly incompatible with its new mission. Throughout the
journey, only several of the men had a genuine experience with arctic
conditions.
3) Vilhjalmur Stefansson, an anthropologist and ethnologist, believed
that there was a ‘lost continent’ under the Arctic ice. He also believed
that the discovery would make him famous but there is no missing
landmass in reality. In 1913–14, he ordered a voyage (that has an
account called 'The Ice Master') with the mother ship 'Karluk' for the
convicted Arctic expedition.
4) The quotation 'he and several others headed off into the night,
ostensibly to hunt for food' shows that food was scarce and might have
been one of the key explanations for why Stefansson left the ship. After
the matters heading with the thunder roar, the captain had no choice
but to order to abandon the ship so no further casualties occur.
