WHAT IS AN ENDOTHERM?

endotherms, also referred to as warm blooded organisms, are animals that is dependent on or capable of the
internal generation of heat.

Being endothermic allows organism to live in cooler places, which may be inaccessible to ectothermic organisms
that may be of detriment to as as well as regulating internal body temp to combat parasitic organisms or infection
.

Cooling mechanisms in endotherms.

• vasodilation in capillaries - during vasodilation, these muscles relax causing more arterioles near skin to dilate
allowing increased blood flow through capillaries
• sweating - sweat is secreted by sweat glands, the secretion of sweat cools down skin as the water is converted
into water vapour by the residual heat energy present in organism
• flattening of hairs - the hair erector muscles in skin relax causing hairs to lay flat preventing the trapping of air
and thus decreasing the amount of insulation present on surface of skin

Warming mechanisms in endotherms

• vasoconstriction in capillaries - lower blood flow results in less loss of heat energy as less blood is flowing by
surface of skin
• boosting metabolic actions - most of the metabolic reactions in the body are exothermic providing warmth to
body
• shivering - the metabolic reaction required to power the shivering mechanism raise core body temp
• erection of hairs - hair erector muscles contract causing hair to stand upright allowing trapping of hair which
increases the amount of air trapped as air is a good insulator of heat

my selected endotherm is a horse.

HOW DO HORSES REACT TO INCREASED TEMPERATURE ?
horses cam sweat to allow dissipation of heat, a horse working hard in a hot environment
more forceful breaths to allow expulsion of hot air.

HOW DO HORSES REACT TO COLDER TEMPERATURE?

shivering to allow raising of internal temp of organism
groups of horses may huddle together to allow maintenance of warmth of all horses involved
presence of coarse, dense fur with many breeds having a long mane so as to trap air to minimise loss of heat
