This essay was first presented as the inaugural Peter le Huray Lecture for the Royal
Musical Association at the Tonality in Perspective conference held at King’s College
London in March 2008, and it subsequently was given at the fifty-third annual con-
ference of the Society for Ethnomusicology in Middletown, Connecticut, in October
2008. It has also been read at colloquia at Indiana University, Peabody Institute, Oxford
University, the University of Michigan, Royal Holloway University of London, South-
ampton University, the Royal Museum for Central Africa in Tervuren, University of
Cape Coast, and Boston University. It formed the basis of a keynote address to the
Music-Race-Empire conference held at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, April
