(After the motivation)

You already know what adjectives is, right?

Yes, miss!

Can someone tell me again what is an adjective?

An adjective describes the
noun or the pronoun.

Very good!

Now, we have to deepen our knowledge about

this part of speech. Did you know that adjective
has an order?
No, miss!
We haven’t heard about it yet.

The royal order of adjectives is a guide for

arranging adjectives before a noun in a way that
creates a clear and effective description. This
order is based on the idea that some types of
adjectives are more important or carry more
weight in terms of the information they convey,
and therefore should be placed before others.

By following this order, writers and speakers

can ensure that their descriptions are clear,
concise, and easy to understand.

The order of the adjectives are:

1. Determiners
2. Observations or opinions
3. Size
4. Shape
5. Age
6. Color
7. Origin
8. Material

When we say Determiners: These are words

that specify the reference of a noun.
Examples include “the”, “a”, “this”, and “those”.
they are placed first in the order because they
determine which specific noun is being referred
to.

The second in order is Observations or opinions:

these are adjectives that express a speaker’s
observation or opinion about a noun. Examples
include “beautiful”, “ugly”, “tasty”, and
“disgusting”. they come after determiners
because they expressed a subjective viewpoint.

The third in order is Size: Adjectives that express

size of a noun come next. Examples include
“large”, “small”, “tall”, and “short”.

The fourth in order Shape: adjectives that

express the shape of a noun come after size.
Examples include “round”, “square”,
“rectangular”, and “oval”.

The fifth in order is Age: Adjectives that express

the age of a noun follow shape. Examples
include “new”, “old”, “ancient”, and “modern”.

The sixth in order is Color: Adjectives that

express the color of a noun come after age.
Examples include “red”, “green”, “blue”, and
“yellow”.

The seventh in order is Origin: Adjectives that

express the origin of a noun come after color.
Examples include “French”, “Chinese”,
“American”, and “German”.

And lastly, the eight in order is Material:

Adjectives that express the material a noun is
made of come last. Examples include “metal”,
“cotton”, “glass”, and “plastic”.

The order of adjectives can also help convey

tone, emphasis, and style in writing. For
example, placing an adjective that conveys a
personal opinion before one that conveys a
factual observation can place emphasis on the
opinion and convey a more subjective tone.

Let’s have an example and let’s try recognizing

the order of adjectives.

Our example sentence is…

 The beautiful , hand-painted, Italian ceramic

vase. (Students raised their hands)

In this example, what do you think is the word

“the”?
It’s the determiner

Yes, student A?

(Students raised their hands)

Very good!

How about the word “beautiful”?

It’s the observation or opinion

Yes, Student B?

(Students raised their hands)

That’s correct!

How about the word “hand-painted”?

It’s also the observation or
opinion

Yes, student C?

(Students raised their hands)

Excellent! That’s correct.
How about the word “Italian”?
It’s the origin.

Yes, student D?

(Students raised their hands)

That’s right!

How about the word “ceramic vase”?

It’s the material

Yes, student E?

That’s correct! Very good!

In this sentence, the adjectives are arranged in

the following order: determiner (the),
observation/opinion (beautiful),
observation/opinion (hand-painted), origin
(Italian), material (ceramic).

Another example sentence:

 The old, rusty, red pickup truck.

In this sentence, the adjectives are arranged in

the following order: determiner (the), age (old),
observation/opinion (rusty), color (red), noun
(pickup truck). •

 The grand, Gothic, stone cathedral.

In this sentence, the adjectives are arranged in

the following order: determiner (the).
observation/opinion (grand), origin (Gothic),
material (stone), noun (cathedral).

 The large, square, wooden coffee table.

In this sentence, the adjectives are arranged in

the following order: determiner (the), size (large),
shape (square), material (wooden), noun (coffee
table).

(EXPLAIN) Now, that we know the right order of adjectives

Developing mastery which is the determiners, observation/opinion,
size, shape, age, color, origin, and material,

V. REMARKS
Keep in mind that by following the royal order of
adjectives, our sentences will be concise,
precise, and will provide specific descriptions that
are easy to understand. It's important to
remember that this is only a basic guidance and
that there might be exceptions to the order; still,
the objective is always to provide a description
that is understandable and useful.
