DESIGN STANDARD Date 01.02.2016

Supervisor: IVECO STD. 19-0201

Manager: IVECO STD. 19-0201

NOTE
This Standard agrees in part with ISO 2553-84, ISO 4063-78 and UNI 1310 Stand
ards.

1 PURPOSE

The standard contains requirements concerning the graphical representation of the joints and
In case of dispute the only valid reference is the original italian edition.

of what relates to them (qualifying and permissible limits of acceptability of defects men
tioned in the I.S. 18-0600, controls, dimensions, etc..).

2 VALIDITY RANGE

The specifications of the standard are valid for heat joining of metal elements listed in Table
I of standard I.S. 10-4000.

3 PROCEDURE INDICATIONS ON DRAWINGS

The procedure symbol from Table I of standard I.S. 10-4000 must be indicated on the
designs opposite.
HANDLING ON INTERLEAF

If the peculiarity of the procedure selected prevent its precise identification via symbols of
Table I of the standard I.S. 10-4000, it is necessary to associate a word that identifies the
sub-procedure to the symbol's code.

For example, for spot welding of adhesive material, the word "adhesive" is placed near the
symbol "PE". If other indications regarding particular welding requirements are needed, for
example: oil-proof, gas-proof, resistant to corrosion, etc., they must be indicated in the draw
ing after the data related to welding.

4 WELDINGS, TYPES AND SYMBOLS

The types of weldings and their shape are substantially characterized by the type of welded
coupling and by the caulking tool shape.
There are then butt weldings, fillet weldings, overlapping weldings and other ones.
The types of welding and relative symbols are available from the Table I to the Table IV,
the configuration of the caulking and corresponding weld type is seen from the weld repres
entation and shown in Tables VIII and IX.

4.1 Butt-welding

For butt-welding, the parts are placed together on a surface in order to create the caulking
tool.
The form of the caulking tool (to prepare the welding) can be freely chosen in conformance
with general welding techniques. This shape can be obtained without processing, e.g.:
I-caulking tool or processed caulking tool, V, U or Y-caulking tool (also double form of weld
ing).

4.2 Fillet welding

Fillet welded parts are generally set in two planes perpendicular to one another and form a
corner caulking.
Fillet welding can be carried out in double form (no preparation) or combined with butt-weld
ing, e.g.: HV-welding (including preparation).
Parts overlapped in parallel direction can also be fillet welded.

4.3 Overlapping weld

In overlapping welds, the elements and the surface to weld overlap in a parallel sense.
Spot welding under gas pressure, preset spot welding and seam welding are used.

These include welding inside holes, welding of level surface, welding at a slant and welding
double seams and projection welding for screw and nuts pins and bushings.
To weld inside holes, (with the exception of spot-welding), one of the two mating parts is
provided with either circular holes or slots).
The hole in the fusion welding process is filled with welding material.
If it consists of a hollow in the upper plate, welding is to be carried out along the perimeter,
not through the hole, because this is the welding of a circular corner.
When welding a level surface, seamed parts are generally resistance welded under pressure
(flash weld).
Slanting and seamed weldings are often used for soldered joints.
In the projection welding of screw, nuts, pins or bushing,,on the sheet metal which receives
the component being welded there is a hole which acts as a centering and the union is
carried out by means of the fusion of the appendages present on the component with the
sheet metal or if the hole is missing, the position have to be indicated in drawing.

5 SYMBOLS

Types of welding are identified with symbols, according to the form of the joint and/or type of
preparation of welding (form of caulking),
and according to the way the welding is carried out and set up.

5.1 Base symbols and compound symbols regarding weld type

The Table I shows (from no. 1 to 14) the base symbols for simple welds. Complex symbols
are used for double welding, as indicated in No. 2-2 to 10-10.

NOTES:

- The drawing serves only to clarify the weld spot.

- For welding under gas protection, the base symbol used is the letter S.
Example: = SO

- Continuous roll-welding: roll-welding.

5.2 Additional and complementary symbols

The additional symbols, according to the Table II, which serve to define the shape of the
surfaces of the welds and can be combined according to the needs and possibilities of
application, with the different symbols of welds (examples for the composition are represen
ted in the Table IV).
The form of surfaces to be welded can also be obtained with subsequent processing.
The complementary symbols as in Table III provide the part indications, such as: on
arrangement of welding, etc.

6 GRAPHIC SYMBOL POSITION ON DRAWING

6.1 General information

The complementary graphic symbols of this standard are only part of the full method for
representation (Figure 1) that are in addition to the graphic indications.

- a reference line (with camber) for coupling, hereafter "camber line"(see Figures 2 and 3);
- a double reference line that comprises one solid line and one with parallel segments (see
Figure 5). For symmetrical welds, the dashed line is not necessary and can be left out;
- a certain number of conventional dimensions and signs
Note 1: The dashed line can be drawn above or below the continuous line.
Note 2: The camber line, reference line and graphic sign trait and writing widths must
be complying respectively with UNI 3968 and 7559/1.

The welding location is defined specifying:

- the position of the camber line ;

- the position of the reference line
- the position of graphic sign in regards to the reference line.
depending on the rules respectively indicated in paragraphs 6.3, 6.4, 6.5.

6.3 The position of the camber line

The position of the camber line in regards to the weld can be any [see Figures 4a) and
4b)].

Nevertheless, for weldings type 4, 6 and 8 (Table I), the line must run towards the sheet
whose side has been prepared [see Figures 4c) and 4d)].
The camber line:

- meets at one end of the reference line to form an angle;

- generally ends with a camber.

a) b) c) d)

Figure 4 - The position of the camber line

6.4 The position of the reference line

The reference line must preferably be drawn in parallel with the lower edge of the drawing or
alternatively perpendicularly.

6.5 The position of graphic sign in regards to the reference line.

The graphic sign can be above or below the reference line.

If the graphic sign is placed on the continuous reference line side, the (external surface of
the) welding is on the “camber side” of the coupling.

If the graphic symbol is to the side of the dashed line of reference, the eternal weld side is
on the "side opposite the camber line" of the coupling (Figure 5) [7].

[7] For relief welds, the surface with the reliefs is considered as surface outside the welding area.

7 COMPLEMENTARY INDICATIONS

In order to specify possible further welding properties, complementary indications can be

necessary.
As an example, the following ones can be mentioned:

7.1 Perimeter welds

When welding must be performed around a part, the graphic symbol is a circle with centre
on the intersection between camber line and reference line (Figure 6).

Date 01.02.2016

7.2 On-site welding

Welding to be performed on-site must be indicated by a flag placed on the intersection

between camber and reference lines (Figure 7).

Figure 7 - Complementary indication for on-site welding

7.3 Welding procedure indications

The procedure (if necessary) must be indicated inside a fork at the end of the reference line
(Figure 8). In case of the projection welding of nuts, screws, pins or bushings the indication
of the procedure is necessary and mandatory because the symbol is used also for the
welding points. Other optional information, such as weld size and/or number of projections
may be included in the welding symbol object of local practices and after consultation with
Manufacturing.

Figure 8 - Complementary indication for welding procedure

7.4 Indication of non-destructive test

Not provided for by the ISO standard. To prescribe non-destructive inspection of the weld,
the following codes must be used:

- X-ray inspection RX
- leak detection inspection RF
- magnetoscopic inspection MS
- ultrasound inspection US
- penetrating fluid inspection LP
- induced current inspection CI

The abbreviation indicating the type of check must be placed at the reference line end imme
diately after the numeric symbol indicating the welding procedure (if this symbol is used).

8 WELDING DIMENSIONING

8.1 General information

Weld dimensions are defined by placing a certain number of digits representing the dimen
sion next to the graphic symbol of the main following dimensions (see Figure 9):

(1) cross-section dimensions; figures shall be written at the left of the symbol;

(2) longitudinal dimensions; figures shall be written at the right of the symbol.

S l S l

Figure 9 - Example of dimension position indication in regards to graphic symbols

8.2 Main dimensions to be indicated

Dimensions identifying weld position on the part shall not be shown on the conventional
representation but on drawing.

8.2.1 Absence of indications on the right of the symbol means that weld is continuous along the whole
part.

8.2.2 Unless otherwise specified, butt weldings are meant with full penetration.

8.2.3 For fillet welding, there are two methods to indicate dimensions Figure 10). Therefore, the let
ters a or z must be indicated in front of the digits that stand for cross-section. The meaning of
said letters is::

9 SYMBOLS POSITION

The symbol is placed perpendicular to the reference line and defined the joint welding spot.
The part of the joint where the camber line is directed is the opposite side (Table VI).
It is best for the camber line to indicate "top surface of the part".

TABLE VI - Position of symbols

Representation with
Drawing Position of symbol
symbols

The symbol is located above the reference line if the

camber line indicates "top side of part"”

The symbol is located below the reference line if the

camber line indicates "opposite side of part"”

The symbol intersects the reference line if the weld, in

the parallel joint or overlapping joint, is inside the con
nection or performed on both sides

If dealing with asymmetrical caulking with a side perpendicular to the "top surface of the
part", the camber line is directed toward the side not perpendicular of caulking, example: HV
weld (see Figure 12 and 13).

Figure 12

Figure 13

The reference and opposite side have been identified for fillet welds on one side only given
that the reference side is the one towards which the camber line is directed (Figure 4).
The symbol is positioned above the reference line if the fillet welding is on the opposite side.
The tip of the symbol always faces right in this case.
The camber line must always head towards the joint [Table VII - X)].
Otherwise no symbol representation is valid [Table VII - Y)].

10.2 Welding for which symbol representation is not advisable

In order not to inadequately use symbols and to avoid mistakes when preparing weldings, it
is advisable to represent and dimension the following types of weldings according to the
usual drawing criteria.

11 DIMENSIONING

In welding representation with symbols, dimensions are added to the symbol.

These are included depending on the welding position: for weldings on visible parts placed
above the reference line.
Their position is regulated by prescriptions in point 11.2.

11.1 Terms, distinctive letters, applications

11.1.1 Weld thickness

11.1.1.1 Thickness of weld "s" of butt welding

Dimension ”s” is indicated in butt welding even if the caulking involves the entire section (for
examples see Figure 14).

a) I-welding with partial b) double I-welding with c) double I-welding with

penetration partial penetration total penetration

Figure 14

11.1.1.2 Thickness of weld "s" for fillet welding

The dimension ”a” is equal to the largest height of the isosceles triangle inscribed within the
weld section (excluding root penetration) (See Figure 8).
The measure of the weld thickness (min. ≥ 2mm) must always be indicated. For example,
see Figures 15 - 16 a), b), c); this dimension is only useful as production reference (dimen
sional check).

11.1.1.3 Fillet welding with deep penetration of root (pursuant DIN 18800)

For fillet welding with deep penetration of the root, according to Figure 17, these must be
indicated separately on the production documents and not via symbols.
In welding processes which ensure a penetration "e" that goes beyond the theoretical
caulking root, for example semiautomatic or automatic welding or under gas protection (CO2,
mixed gas) welding thickness can be considered as given by (see Figure 17):
e min
a+a)
2
The measure "e min" must be defined for each welding method via an execution test.

[12]

Bead theoretical root.

Figure 17

[12] The measure ”a” corresponds to the thickness of weld ”a” as in point 11.1.1.2 (See Figure 8).

11.1.2 Weld length, end dimensions, weld intervals

The “l” marking length identifies the welding length for butt weldings, fillet weldings, weldings
within slot holes and continuous-line weldings.
The “v” end dimension represents, for all weldings that do not completely cover the coupling
length, the dimension that goes from the coupling end up to the beginning of the first “l”
welding section, or in case of interrupted weldings, the dimension that goes from the coup
ling end up to the beginning of the first welding section.
For weld intervals (mean distance and pitch) the letter "e" must be used (see example Table
XIII).

Page 33/37

Date 12.01.2016

11.1.2.1 Continuous welding

The welding length dimension has usually to be always indicated, in spite of the fact that the
welding is extended to the whole coupling length or if it is present only in sections.

NOTE: in fillet welding, the craters and the head/end portions of the weld that must not reach the pre
scribed thickness are not mathematically compatible with weld length.

11.1.2.2 Interrupted weldings

The interrupted weldings are weldings that do not completely cover the coupling length.
In addition to end dimensions, to single section lengths and to intervals, the number of the
sections themselves must also be indicated; these must be clearly indicated with the letter
”n”, see corresponding example in Table XIII.
In case of weldings with staggered sections, the welding indications must include the Z
symbol, that is placed before the “e” dimension (see examples N. 5 and 6 of Table XIII).
